That first one is great advice. We all have something to offer and should allow that to guide us.

Nolan really is one of the greats. He clearly knows what he's talking about, enough that it resonates with just about any aspiring screenwriter for just about any style.
Kinda funny as he is a much more talented director than a writer.

He's a much better director than writer in my opinion.
He's such an eloquent and concise and even I daresay, inspiring communicator. He never seems to be talking down to people, at least in these interviews, he doesn't have some of the pomposity that other well regarded filmmakers like Scorsese or Coppola seem to carry especially when they're talking about the nature of filmmaking. Every film of his has something to admire about it and I just love how he blends as best as possible the best of indie/art house filmmaking with blockbuster/big budget filmmaking to make films that largely everyone can enjoy. Even Tenet, which I admit is the first Nolan film I saw that I wasn't gaga over, has undeniable filmmaking craft in it, so much so that I'll have to give it a second chance, but I've loved everything Nolan has done prior to Tenet. Here's hoping Oppenheimer is incredible.
As a side note, i can't help but notice that Rian Johnson did everything that Nolan just described for Star Wars: The Last Jedi....and yet that film gets eviscerated in Internet film discourse.
I also didn’t enjoy Tenet in first viewing. There was so much to process but I loved it in my second and third viewing.
I really like number 2 - you must write about things that interest you, otherwise, you won't enjoy the process and won't write as good as you can. However, then you must find a way how to present to an audience that thing that is interesting to you, that it will also be interesting to other people

Make a film you want to see yourself. As a beginner filmmaker, I can relate to that. Don't focus too much on creating the perfect movie. Know that every film you create will be the worse film you will make. You will need to be consistent, don't think big, and make the film's that you want to make. Only with practice and determination you will see results

Thank you for this, this is really what I needed to hear. I'm 18 now, and I've tried to come up with new plots/stories for over 4 years now. Everytime I come up with a new story, it feels new and amazing for a week or so, and then it doesn't feel great anymore. Then I just end up dumping the plot and move onto making a new one. This year has been hard because being stuck at home drastically reduces inspiration, and I haven't been able to generate any new ideas naturally.
@@alexrider7110 am also 18 and I agree this year has been a difficult year to work with. Personally, the way I create stories is not by focusing on writing one script but rather focus on creating 5 different story's at once. Then I use elements from all 5 stories to create one scenario. Still, with the pandemic people need to know that it's more difficult to make films this year, but not impossible
@@leonidzagrov8129 i somehow will disagree to it because of my experience, that being with my family i was able to see small flaws in our value system and our rules of life so i made stories out of them, it was only possible after i spent time with me. The prestige and Batman begins are two of my fav films - because he perfectly marries blockbuster and art house cinema. When I saw them I didn’t expect complexity or any level of detail but that’s what he gives us.
He can get massive stars and make something fun and interesting. He isn’t Kubrick or tarkovsky but that’s fine. His films aren’t as challenging - but sometimes that’s what we all want !! They are interesting and engaging - love his work, not sure I’m a die hard fan but defo respect him allot
I can relate on so many things that he is saying and always thought that this way can't be write, it should be different. and after digging through several tutorials how to build plot structures I finally came across this video which is a relief to know that there is never a right and wrong on your style of writing. This guy truly is fascinating

This is a great new channel may i suggest a thing. after every tip you display on the screen when you move to the next scene make the previous tip a little transparent. So that it looks more clean and we can focus on the point and the video you are saying at the time

I don’t think Nolan is “the most complex and amazing director ever” but I love allot of his films
Who is more complex? Not saying he's the GOAT of visual storytellers, but truly, who can compare with how deeply woven and complex his stories are and how well he portrays them on screen? Most of his films have several layers and require several viewing to fully grasp. Some are more top level, sure. But I don't think anyone can deny he is the master of making us follow him in to the hedge maze. Inception, Memento, and Tenet are 3 of the most complex movies ever created. TDK is the single deepest and most impactful comic book film ever put together. Interstellar, is by far the best sci-fi drama since Odyssey, and aside from the line uttered by Hathaway that gave away the ending and theme, is his most beautifully touching film.

I have allot of admiration for Nolan... he makes very artistic movies within the mainstream and is always challenging himself with new ideas and ways to tell a story. But it’s not like trying to dissect a Terrence Malick film....
@@ruly8153 Nolan is one of my fav directors, but if I'm being honest here, I find a few problems with his films- poorly written dialogue and characters. I don't hate him, but people certainly talk about him like he's the next Hitchock or something.

what are you talking about!? Oppenheimer is like Nolan mimics Hitchcock (courtroom drama + politization + melodrama + adapted screenplay) but technically he is dull and uninspired, not even close to Hitchcock usage of technique.

The most important thing is something out of your control. If you aren’t already in the industry or can afford a quarter million to attend a film school, it’s like winning a lottery. Unless you are an extraordinary talent like a Tarantino it’s not guaranteed. You have to know people, it’s how the industry works. Most people in the industry get work from people they know.
This guy didnt go to school either. Did he know anyone? Youre probably more right than wrong
Creating movies for rewatching can also be a problem these days if it becomes the focus, such as the new Batman movie. Like most moviegoers I want to enjoy the movie when I watch it for the first time. I don't want to have to analyze the film over multiple viewings just to enjoy it. Big budget movies are not to be made exclusively for film students and critics.

Is it leadership and guidance? or fear of getting fired? because everything has to go to the director, or you’re fired? Tenant was bizarre and outlandish and at the end made me want to go re-edit it into something you can follow without racking your brain. It also made me wonder what terry gilliam would have done with it. Things that make you go hummmm

In my view his Number 3 is one the most over used and worst of all tips i've ever seen used in movies....And goes a long way into explaining why so many movies are ass gravy now days...They break a cardinal rule that Quentin Tarantino seems to have known instinctively...That is, never to confuse your audience...Most modern movies..Especially sci-fi is just convoluted shit that you have to watch 3 times just to understand....Audiences don't like that and don't respect it....His number 4 tip also goes a long way in explaining why his movies seem so devoid of any art or soul.
SOME audiences don't like that. The fact that Nolan's films are typically very successful clearly indicates that many people enjoy a lot of detail and complexity in their movies. There's also a difference between being confused and not knowing what's happening at a given moment-the entire mystery genre is built on the audience being in the dark to some degree or another. Tarantino also said that it's okay for the audience to be confused for a time if they feel like they're in capable hands.
Or maybe that's your taste in movies? You don't like a complex plot or potentially unconventional plot with a lot of moving parts?
Not everyone enjoys watered down blended baby food stories. Not sure where you're coming from you need to elaborate more & i don't mean to disrespect you.
@@Crunch_Buttsteak I think, and I say, I THINK what he meant to say was that Nolan takes plots that are complicated enough and convolutes them even more, diminishing the soul, art, and emotion of a film. That and the fact that the characters in his films are quite forgettable.
people just see his films because they want to feel like intelectual film experts, I dont understand how anybody can actually get anything interesting out of his films. film is about emotion when it comes down to it, and characters, because thats what we can genuinly relate to the most as humans, and what we know, and therefor whats hits us and keep us hooked (That also applies to action and sci fi..) Nolan has never actually done this, in my opinion at least. On one side, I really just don't get why people like his films, but on the other side its obviously an "emperors new clothes" situation lol. Just compare, lets say Dunkirk to any other OK ww2 film out there. The lack of anything to really care about in that movie is actually amazing haha. On the other side, he is an interesting guy, and thinks outside of the box which is cool, I like memento, because the kind of obscure structure actually is a very cool tool to help us relate to, and feel as the main character, as apposed to most of his other films, where everything is just gimick. I'm just tired of hearing people say he is the best director of all time and shit, ugh

The screenplay lesson I got from Tenet is: if you focus too much on a gimmick and don't give a shit about interesting characters and engaging plot, you will lose your audience.
Obviously you need to rewatch.

Which is why you need to rewatch. Not 1 Nolan movie is a gimmick or confusing. You actually have to pay attention to a Nolan movie. They're not movies to turn your brain off & watch.

It has so, so, so many deep layers and there are certain symbolic aspects in its music and narrative structure that make it really unique. Upon a second watch, you might pick up some of these things. It's up to you whether you want to or not, but I encourage you to. It blows your mind.
One tip for him..... don´t go too nerdy like in Tennet, I like your art but slow down on that mate...
