Those poor firemen they willingly went to do their duty as all firemen do but they didn't know the full nature of what had gone wrong.
Those pilots who flew choppers to dump stuff into building 4, to extinguish the burning core and attempt to stifle the escape of radioactive dust. Them, the Liquidators & the miners all should be regarded as Heroes, as in the 'Hero' medal. Even though it was not in a military action. The thing is the reactor was poisoned by xenon. Which slowed the reaction.
The correct procedure is a complete shut down followed by waiting for the xenon to decay.
They instead removed enough rods to "stabilize" the core against the xenon poisoning. Meaning that the Xenon was the main absorber of the core. This configuration is stable as long as the xenon is there. But a normal operation power the Xenon is burned of by the reactor.
The core nearly solely moderated by the xenon was burning the Xenon away (fast) thus the power started to rise to the level the reactor would usually have with the amount of rods removed.
But more rods where removed then the reactor was designed for. The level at which the core would have self stabilized was higher than the design could withstand. Seeing this the decided to shutdown. Which is the right decision.
But the control rods feature tips that accelerate the reaction. So inserting the rods first replaced water (absorber) with the rod tips (accelerator) the already too hot water turned into steam and bursted the channels causing pressure loss causing more water to boil which blew the lid of.
Now the glowing hot graphite structure of the core was exposed to air causing it to self ignite and blow the roof of.
The graphite stack continued to burn for hours transporting particles of the rods into the air.

From what I know (and it may be a rather loose comparison) radiation affects cells in a similar fashion to what happens when a computer's hard disk is destroyed, while whatever is loaded into RAM remains. The DNA is annihilated or damaged beyond repair, and while the system may continue to operate for a short time, it soon requires instructions from the parts of its data store that have been destroyed. These errors and data losses compound exponentially, and the system collapses. If this happens to a few thousand cells, the body can repair and recover. If it happens to a few trillion, there is no coming back. It isn't so much a burn as it is a destruction of the data that allows the non-living parts of your cells to create something living.

Me and my friends we were amateur astronomers & every year would spend many nights out in the countryside along the border observing stars under dark skies where we had a simple hut with water and electricity and our gear. We were just packing for another few nights out when we heard about the radioactivity from Chernobyl detected in Sweden and Germany. Governments recommended people to stay indoors when rain was expected and stay away from mushrooms. We quickly arranged a Geiger-counter and took it with us on our observation-trip. We had clear skies mostly and the rains only came briefly during the second and third nights. Three nights and days the ticking of our Geiger-counter told us what the natural background-level sounded like and made us think about all those less fortunate farther east …

When the accident happened I was 9 years old and I was living very far of Ukrania, in Argentina, but I had the intuition, even when I don't knew anything about the power of nuclear energy, that the things never would be the same for anyone in the world, and that was true, but a lot of people lived nearest the tragedy. Is good to know the story through their eyes.

On the other hand, you don’t know that the Fukushima accident has not yet been localized, there is still radioactive water leaking into the oceans, because the reactor core melted the concrete base of the building, the Japanese are also going to pour tons of radioactive water into the ocean. Of course, it is better to watch colorful English series about naked miners.

My dad was twenty when it happened. He told me he remembered waking up a few days later when the news got around and hearing about it. We watched the show together and he was shocked as he didn’t know how close everything was to blowing up. No one knew. Im from germany and he nor i would exist if it blew up like they said (around ep. 2..)its harsh and cruel to think how much Chernobyl impacted europe and that, until now, a lot of people didn’t know how close of a call it was to being even worse. I am indebted with my life to all those firefighters, workers and helpers who kept it from being much, much worse. I hope their families are ok and that they rest easily

Thus when I learned it was about Chernobyl I kept watching. But when I found out all characters spoke English, I lost interest and went on with preparing lunch for work the day after. But after I'd finished doing so, I returned to watch the rest of the episode and did so for the remaining four...
