Great vid! I'm not trying to be critical of this video as it's obviously been very helpful to many, but I've got a few suggestions that I think may help improve this process. As always, YMMV.
Here's what worked for me:
Use a 12" or longer piece of 1/2" threaded PVC pipe (often sold as riser pipe), insert threaded end into seal area, and then lever it out, using the edge of the seal bore as a fulcrum point if necessary. The threads bite right into the rubber and make removal a breeze. It took me about 10 seconds to remove my seal, and I didn't risk damaging anything by using metal tools. This method will also be easier if you are working underneath the vehicle, and not on a bench.
As for installing the new seal, I'd try to avoid hammering it in directly. Here's how I installed mine:
I placed a small piece of 2x4 on top of the seal and tapped it with a rubber mallet. Easy. Even pressure over edge of seal and minimal risk of warping it.
Regardless of how you do this, good luck!
A T we love great positive comments that are useful to many :) thank you and you are very welcome my friend :)
Saw this great suggestion after struggling for some time. Went and got the parts and still not luck , had to bend and pry with a screwdriver unfortunately.
At home Depot now. Must be 3/4", at least that's how it is on my CTS-V 6L90

And this way of removing seals can be used in many situations. I have never thought about using wood chisel because it's too sharp, but it can bite into seal right above surface. You only have to feel it and not drive it into aluminum like to wood.
Another good trick to know.
Thanks!!!

Hey thanks, this really helps me. I destroyed the first seal trying to get it back in. Got to find another one today and get my van running!

having a hard time installing the new seal. The old one was rubber, took a while to removed all the pieces as it was stuck. Hope I didn’t removed a build in seal on a 2002 Chevy Tahoe. Any help would be appreciated.
Nestor, your new seal you have should be exactly what you are removing. The old seal you remove should look exactly like the new one you have in your hand. I have never seen an all rubber transmission filter seal, they always have a metal ring connected to the rubber. If all you have removed is rubber, then there is a metal ring in there that needs to be removed as well. Hope this helps, thanks for watching and asking, have a great day and all the best on your project my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Good idea/trick. These suckers always give me problems. Thumbs up
Aaron glad to help :)
I think I may have bent new pickup seal installing it not knowing, will this cause the pickup tube unable to pull fluid through pickup tube if seal in either not seated or bent...... I put pan on filled with fluid and truck wont move.... getting low pressure code
Kevin yes this will be very detrimental to your vehicle moving
It'll suck air and you'll burn up your transmission and will need to be rebuilt.
Perfect job

Great in theory but try doing it on a 99 Tahoe. That ain't happening. That thing is recessed way in there. You're not getting a hammer and chisel in there
Why can’t you just leave the old one in.
@@russ8916 you can leave it if its in good condition but generally you should replace it, the filters usually come with a spare seal anyway

I have a 2013 dodge caravan. Do u have to remove the transmission in order to change the front seal
I'm afraid to say, yes you do :( Thanks for asking my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
For the 6L80 tranny, I threaded a 3/4” metal pipe into the seal and jiggled and tugged. Came right out.

I have a huge trouble removing the seal. I feel like its infused with the transmission or in other words not removable. Is this possible? Cos now the rubbers are damaged after trying so hard to “replace” the seal and I might’ve ruined the transmission.
There should be a lip on the seal that you can take this tool here amzn.to/3NjXO41 and hold the chisel parallel to the ground on the lip and start tapping to drive the seal inwards, not up but in. Once you get it in far enough where you can use this amzn.to/3XiGhOl grab ahold of the seal clamp it tightly and start pulling it out. If you have any questions feel free to send us pictures to sweetprojectcars@gmail.com and we will help you as much as possible my friend. Thanks for watching and sharing, have a great day and all the best on your project. mad Mike the hammer SPC
my new filter comes with the seal attached to it. now it does nt fit so tightly in the transmission housing. the original was quite tight. could this be a problem. can i put some rtv on it. Cheers.
Do not use any sealant in any way, and the best thing to do for a transmission filter is to buy OEM filters, you can get them at a dealership. Also, make sure your other seal isn't still in the transmission. Thanks for watching and asking, hope this helps my friend. Have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
@@SweetProjectCars Thank you. I removed the old seal by using your method and it came out easily. for now i ve used an ebay filter with some additional o rings. but i think you are right. OEM filter would work the best. its 5 times dearer but there seems to be no other way. Cheers.
Thanks

Do you NEED to remove and replace that seal or can you simply leave it in and put the new filter onto it?
Nevermind, read your responses below.
Glad you found your answer mish. Thank you for watching, hope you have a great rest of your week my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Some of those seals come installed on the filters already, right? Or do you always have to remove it off the filter and install before hand?
Rolando Gonzalez the older cars have the seal on them the newer cars don't you will know the minute you open the package if the seal is in there my friend :)
When i bought mine it came with the seal on the filter but you will have to do what this video is suggesting for us to do anyways.
How did you guys remove your installed seals on the filters without damaging it? Kinda confusing as my old filter still had that collar seal stuck on and reciprocates identically what my new filter looks like but there’s still a seal visibly stuck in the bore that I’ll need to remove tomorrow. When you guys took off your old filters, did you guys typically have two seals? One which stayed on the filter and inside the hole? Or just one? 01 ls1 z28 thanks in advance
i love you
Thank you :)

What may happen if we put a new filter with the old seal already in there?
Highly suggest that you use a new seal or you could be doing the process over again. Thanks for asking. Have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Will a big flat head screwdriver work instead of a chisel ?
You can try it Ivan, the reason we use the chisel is because it has an extremely sharp edge. Thank you for watching and asking. Have a great week. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Not so straight forward if the seal is recessed deep inside the transmission. Did this job on a GM6L45 in a BMW yesterday. Only way to do it without a special seal removal tool, is to remove the valve body first. And then it was easy to use a chisel as described. Thanks for the tip though.
Thanks for watching and sharing Sean, we appreciate it my friend. Have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Please do a video on removing the tranny drain plug of a 2002 chevy suburban 1500 5.3. it's in alot of models and years. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about! and the P.I.T.A. it can be because of the rubber gasket good ol ' Gm engineers came up with.
OH I KNOW THE DRAIN PLUG....UGGG lol I will do a video of just that as we have a yukon sitting out here now...but, what I tell people is just replace the pan they are like 30 bucks on ebay for an OEM. then put anti-sieze on the plug so you never have to deal with it again.
Sweet Project Cars LOL, I was pretty sure you'd know exactly what I was talking about! my first encounter was "Supposedly a quick drain and fill" well after screwing up the plug, it being a Sunday, I had to remove the pan, drill out the plug, luckily AutoZone had a drain plug. So I took the opportunity to change the filter and seal. And have the truck back to the customer on time! Definitely antiseize went on the new plug!
Thank you for your videos, time and expertise!!!! I greatly appreciate it!!
lol...that is almost play by play for a experience we had...those plugs are a real BEAR!
What is the purpose of this seal? If it is already tightly attached, what is the purpose of removing it and putting a new seal?
Due to the extreme heat of transmission fluid the seals get extremely hard from that heat and will not seal any more thus allowing dirty transmission fluid to get sucked up into your transmission. Thanks for asking. mad Mike the hammer SPC
A strip of wood may protect the gasket surface.
Thanks for watching and sharing, we appreciate the input Rose, have a great day my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
I don’t usually pull that seal when replacing the filter, and it’s never caused any problems for me on my trucks.
Well, the day it does you're going to wish you did. The heat from the transmission makes the seal become brittle, consider yourself extremely lucky up to now. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great day Shaine. mad Mike the hammer SPC
@@SweetProjectCars Thx. Good to know.
@@SweetProjectCars Brittle? That thing don't look brittle to me if you're using all those tools to get it out.

What happens if you gouge the aluminum bore the it sits in?
Brian Hondel well this is something you don't want to do of course...but if you do then you may have to replace the entire pulley.
Not exactly the answer I was looking for. I appreciate your quick response tho. I was able to set the new seal and its real tight as is the filter and the truck runs great. Hoping i dodged a bullet

Rose I
Usually comes with a "Transmission Filter Kit" at least in mine it did.
Why do you have to remove the seal with a new filter? Cant you just leave the old seal in and use a new filter? Im just wondering.
Gabriella Castellano the seals get hard over time and they need to be replaced so they seal on the filter so you have no dirty fluid go past it into the trans
Wrong but right answer, the seal replacement is needed because the seal may leak,, leaks create loss of suction, hence, no fluid gets picked up. They did away with the positive bolt on seals because they WORKED! And engineered this problem pron design for the same reason they;"GM", re engineered the main bearing Tang's placement on the 350 vortec too easily spin out of place should you aware or un aware run out of oil pressure,, too SPIN THE OIL FED ROD BEARINGS,,. The engines last too long due to gas mizer Japanese autos bought by USA during the 70's gas shortage and cost. Those back then lasted 100'000+ miles before need to rebuild. Ours at that time,, 30 to 40'000 . The gas crunch ended, but the big three lost consumer confidence. They had to build um no too bad last and they did,, 200 to 300'000 miles. Can't sell cars as often if not they last. So,, let's put a mix bag of nut's, bolt's and screws in them to keep the D I y er discouraged and bringing it in for costly repairs that will cause them to consider trading it in. There ya have it,, Capitalism, once good, now gone array.
I don't have the lip, mine is all internal and I can't take it out.
You need to check with your dealer to get the special tool to remove it, it has to be replaced. I would hate to have you go through the whole process of changing your fluid then have it end up leaking. Thanks for watching, hope you have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Really pisses me off, I JUST did this job today and couldn't get that seal out 😡😡😡😡😡😡

After having to deal with this POS, poorly designed part, I am not convinced that it MUST be changed at all, much less with every filter change.
You don't have to change it if you don't want to, we do because we know it's the right thing to do for us. Thanks for watching, have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
@@SweetProjectCars But you probably have done it many times, have all the right tools and have been trained on it. We poor schlubs out here are amateurs. We may never do this again. We don't need it to be perfect. Just good enough for it to run again. If I had known it was going to be nigh impossible, I would have left it alone. As it is, I could not get the new one into the hole and we ended up using 6 rubber o-rings and some Teflon tape. I am hoping mine doesn't get sucked into the gears.
What I think needs to be explained about this part is that it is usually pressed into place when the tranny is being rebuilt. But when the car is on jack stands and you are on your back with fluid dripping on your face it is hard to do. And you know that is how most people who see these videos on the 4L60E will be doing this procedure. Am I right or am I assuming too much?
Just taaaap it in🙄🙄
