- Inside the History: Combat Information Center on Heavy Cruiser USS Salem CA-139
Battleship Cove is on the road to see one of the four remaining Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, MA built ships like USS Massachusetts and USS J.P. Kennedy Jr. DD-850. USS Salem is the last all-gun heavy cruiser in existance.
This video in our "Inside the History" series focuses on the Combat Information Center (CIC) on USS Salem, its operation, and historical use. Battleship Gunner's Mate Tom Lowney discusses the operation and manpower utilized in this space with our resident Naval gunnery expert Dr. John Scholes.

Thanks for this video! I spent many hours on watch in CIC. Brings back a lot of memories.
My shop teacher worked there, Mr. Barker was a wealth of knowledge, I learned alot from him
This is how we did things in the USS Little Rock CG-4 CIC. Everything was done manually. Later I moved to a ship with the computerized NTDS system, but I was glad I cut my teeth on the old school methods. It taught me a lot quickly.
Thank you. I learned a few new things today.
Very good, thanks for the video!
Gosh you guys are awesome! It was Great to see you live at the USS Massachusetts
When I was getting my ESWS qualification in the 80s, they had us learn how to write backwards for the status boards in CIC. I never really got beyond having to stop and think about each letter and draw it backwards. The guys who actually did it daily were way faster.
awesome, ridiculously intricate
You two guys always deliver!
Is Dr. John ever going to be live on Massachusetts, he would be worth the price of admission ten fold
Working on Aircraft (I am a Retired TSgt USAF) is the same way with Technical Orders, TO's for short. There was no memorization for doing ones job except when it came to testing. I will also mention that the B-52 even when the Tech Data changed to the current system, it still had some of the same systems that were first installed when it rolled off the assembly line. So just like with Navy ships Tech Data is important so you can stay up on the most current information along with what is still in use.
I can only imagine what a nightmare working on the wiring on a ship like this must have been at the time. That radar repeater probably had wiring harnesses as thick as a man's arm running to the different radar receivers. Stuff like that has become so much easier with digital network technology.
A Heavy Cruiser is basically a pocket battleship in a sence
Fascinating. How long does it take to learn to write backwards?
You can pick it up in a few minutes with practice, but doing it proficiently, accurately, and fast takes some time! For tours, I'd always write the same word - HELLO so I was quite fast.
SPA-25 RADAR REPEATER / SLQ-25 NIXIE / WLR-1 / WLR 11 SLQ-32 ! SPS-10 SPS 48 SPS 49 AAH THE GOOD DAYS
Couple things…please don’t amputate the guys’ heads, videographer. And y’all might want to light the darker areas. Good job, though!
