I do have golfing buddies, but I really like going out by myself and having the opportunity to meet people I have never met before. There are so many great people out there and it is golf that can bring them together - 4 hours is a long time, so plenty of opportunity to move beyond the "where do you work?", "Where do you live?" etc. One day I was partnered with a man who told me that he was out on the golf course trying to hold things together because his wife was in the hospital dying of cancer. We talked throughout and I kept in touch. She died three days later. I was humbled to have the privilege to walk with him for a short while during this difficult time. I played well too - and, surprisingly, so did he... You never know...
Another wonderful production, And and Tracy. And a great continuation of the philosophy behind 'The Average Golfer plays golf'. It was nice to 'meet' Mikey. I disagree that the conditions didn't make for great photography. It was a very atmospheric day and delivered some lovely images. AndyB and TracyB were my equal favourites this week.
The video quality on your posts is outstanding. It captures the beauty of golf with simplicity and elegance. Remarkable course - I'll try that course next time I visit my roots in Yorkshire. The beauty of the game is the sublime peace of seeking to learn the course, and the people that inhabit it from time to time. It can create some amazing bonds and create friendships. Once more, thank you for sharing this Andy, your channel speaks more to the heart and soul of the game, not the business.
Once of your most interesting OTBT’s, Andy. Mikey’s story about his father struck a chord with me and I’m now trying to reset the golfing gods balance by playing with my young grandson most weeks, and his father when we visit him overseas every year. I think you’re on to something with this content. Worth pursuing the idea further, maybe. Oh, and when the contrast drops, switch to black and white, and Andy B for me this week.
Some of the best friendships are made through this amazing game. Nice to see someone playing with Hogan blades ... I still have my old Hogan director blades (apex shafts) and they still look and play great.

Come on Andy, you’re having everyone think Sand Moor is in Harrogate….not one mention of Leeds!! Sand Moor is one of North Leeds finest courses. Along with Alwoodley and Moortown, both within spitting distance, I dare say they are a match for a few of the courses over your way Birkdale, S&A and Hillside albeit a different test.
Tracy B did it for me Andy. Great video, Golf for me Is having fun and belly laughs with my mates and family. I'm always trying to get better but the laughs ALWAYS makes us come back every week. And lets not forget the ice cold beer at the end of 18.
Golf to me is an escape period, a flushed shot dead aim in flight and making a birdie put a few times on round is tonic for modern life. I lucky enough now to have two children who now bottomed the curve on learning to hit a least 3 good shots on 6-9 holes,a 1890 John Nash designed course, a hilly design, they enjoy it. When you have teenagers chatting homeward bound about there 3 best shots, the long put that worked or even that iron shot to back on the fairway. That is golf harmony.
Gosh I miss playing with my father!!! This game means so much to so many in different ways. I have 5 son now of my own and absolutely love playing with them!!!
Great video. Mike's story about the last time he played with his dad was bittersweet to say the least. I have to ask though, did you actually see him hit that blade 1 iron? When he showed that in his bag, my jaw dropped. I thought back to the old Lee Trevino (I think) quote where someone asked him what he would do if there was a lightning storm while he was playing. He replied that he'd stand in the middle of the fairway and hold a 1 iron straight up over his head because not even God can hit a 1 iron. Keep up the good work. I'm really enjoying this series of videos.

Nice to see you in my local patch, Andy. Sand Moor is a great course. I love the elevation changes, and the variety of hole designs. And possibly the best set of par 3s in the area. Each one a classic - tiny greens defended by an array of bunkers. All or nothing tee shots. It's a shame you never really get to see the water just yards from the course. The trees lining the reservoir could be thinned to make some startling vistas. My only niggle about a special course. I'm glad you liked Harrogate. I'm a southern lad who married a Harrogate girl and the 30+ years up here have been amazing. It's a wonderful town. The trees adjacent to the reservoir are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, which means that the Club are unable to thin them out. A pity because I agree, the vistas would be stunning.
Mike's golf bag reminded me that I need to stop spending money on new clubs....for a long time. I will spend on lessons but that's it for the foreseeable future.
I'm going Tracy B for the photo comp, but really enjoyed this episode too. Harrogate had some specific memories for me, not Betty's tea rooms but Gyrating Geoffreys Disco!

On the basis Leeds is hardly known as a hive of golfing activity, Alwoodley may be known by many but SandMoor is definitely off the beaten track for most, I’d never heard of it
Well done Andy and Mike, being a Yorkshire lad from Bradford and in later times living in Wakefield this is a course I have played before. Alister MacKenzie was Born in Normanton, which is now part of Wakefield and was schooled at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield! There are so many McKenzie courses including some 9 hole courses that he designed when he was making his way as a course designer. I now live in Spain on the Costa Blanca but return to Yorkshire every August to visit family and friends and play as much golf as I can. Some of the courses around north Leeds are beautiful park/ heathland courses. Great video, I hope your wallet didn’t bleed too much from your afternoon tea at Betty’s!!
I was fortunate to play this course with my mate a year last summer in their open event. We came 3rd. It was all about the score 😂. Alwoodly down the road gets rave reviews and Moortown is very close (Peter Allis). I’m originally from Harrogate, now in Canada, only went to Bettys once, we used to have our Christmas work do in the Royal Hall.
