Director John Carpenter summed up Kurt Russell’s character as “Jack is a character who doesn’t know he’s a sidekick. He thinks he’s the hero of the story but he’s not. He’s a sidekick.”
He's the sidekick in an eastern Martial Arts flick instead of the hero of an American action film.
I'd never heard that from Carpenter but suddenly, after years of loving this movie, the vague feeling of not exactly knowing what's going on suddenly makes sense! Jack was 'Indiana Jones in 'The Bar Fire' some B rank Indie short 'historic documentary' about the local bar being burned down in a fight.
Good call, a lot of folks don't get that.
So basically Spiderman.
Carpenter also stated that the character of Burton resembles "John Wayne without a clue."
The potion helps them to do miraculous feats. It's how Wang and Jack were able to jump to the ceiling without help.
Right. I always considered it a 'hero's helper.'
Six demon bag. Wind, fire, all that kind of thing.
Basically Goldschlager.
Hero's feast
It lets them do things no one else can do, to see things no one else can see... or maybe it just gives you a positive attitude...

Michael Myers is credited as 'The Shape' in Carpenter's 'Halloween'.
Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' describes "Pulp" as a shapeless, formless mass. Which perfectly describes Carpenter's 'The Fog'.
Jack Burton's asian-designed t-shirt is an Easter Egg in Tarantino's 'Death Proof', starring Kurt Russell.
Honestly, not having a clue what you're watching but enjoying it seems about right for everyone who's watched this movie and are fans of it. I love this movie!

(As an aside, I lost track of the days of the week and thought yesterday was Friday and I was rather bummed when I saw that there was no Friday movie review from Ashleigh. Then I realized it was only Thursday. Ashleigh, you & Beans have already become an integral part of my Mondays & Fridays! Thanks so much for your fun reviews!)

Hey Ashleigh, at 8:50, you dont have to apologize :)
I agree with others that the next Kurt Russell movie should be "Escape from New York" or "Tango and Cash". One could suggest the Tarantino movies like "Hateful 8" or "Death Proof", but those might be a bit much for her.
Try “They Live”, another John Carpenter action movie from the 80s
Yes I agree "they live" is a classic unique movie also.
And after that, Starman because I want to see Ashleigh crying at the end. John Carpenter has no right to be as versatile a director as he is
@@weldonwin How about Jeff Bridges as a versatile actor?
@@vapoet True, and in Starman, we really get to see some of his acting chops, as an utterly alien being that is inhabiting a human body and slowly learning over the course of the movie, but never fully becoming human.

@@weldonwin best comment I've seen in a while. Nice
Last year there was an article about him and how he may be the actor with the most film credits. That article writer never looked at Eric Roberts' IMDB page. I would argue that Hong's quality film ratio is significantly higher than Roberts' though.
He just got is star.
and, he was the adoptive father of The Dragon Warrior.
I love how Wang is the hero/main character and Jack is just the incompetent side-kick who THINKS he's the hero.
And the best part is that Jack isn't completely incompetent but he's completely outclassed by Wang
Everyone in the movie seems to think Jack's the hero! Lo Pan and the gang barely pay any heed to Wang.
To be fair, Jack did kill Lo Pan with the knife. Wang only cared about getting his fiancée back, not for being the hero.

I agree love that movie
Granted, it's subject matter is a little bit problematic, but I think it was aware of that by addressing what was wrong with his deception. If I remember it correctly anyway since I haven't seen it since I was a kid. I haven't seen the gender swapped remake, but I think it may have been more problematic by lacking self awareness and insinuating that there was nothing wrong with a woman doing the same thing.

Ever since this channel randomly poped up in reccomendations, and I've ended up watching it far too much, I've been waiting for this one!....
Stargate with Kurt Russell was always one of my favorites.
I want to personally thank Chris for prescribing Ashleigh some Kurt Russell as a cure to her 'It's A Mad Mad Mad World' hangover. You're the real MVP!
He gets me
Everyone needs some medically prescribed Kurt Russel :)
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 I'd love to see lots more Kurt reactions! Executive Decision, Tango & Cash, Breakdown, Unlawful Entry. Not cinema masterclasses, but I love them anyway!
Oooh yes Tango and Cash. She would like that one.
My brother was an extra in Tango & Cash, a prison guard, though he mostly ended up on the cutting room floor. Supposedly there’s a scene where you can see him on security cam footage, but I haven’t been able to pick it out. To be fair, I haven’t watched the movie in years.
Gonna need a "Used Cars" reaction to keep this Kurt Russell train rolling. It's a fairly underseen comedy from the early 80s.
All right, Miss Kurt Russell fan, it's time to watch "Soldier" now.
One of the best lines in this movie: "sooner or later I rub everyone the wrong way."
One of my favorites (though I'm shooting from the hip, I'd have to really think about my #1 line) is "My God, no! Please! What is that? Don't tell me."
I use that line to this day. That way when I inevitably piss someone off I can make it even worse by saying, "Told you so."
Nothing beats "son of a bitch must pay"
Fun fact: This movie is now a Disney property which technically makes Kim Catrall a Disney princess. Plus they technically own Revenge of the Nerds and Porky's.
She is in Porkys too makes her a double princess
Used a mostly Asian American cast. Gets totally ignored by film historians. Try John Carpenter's Vampires.
"they live" I also a great one of him
This movie helped to inspire the videogame franchise Mortal Kombat and two of it's main characters in Lord Raiden and Shang TSung.
in the moment when lopan and the friendly "sensei" type guy are having their "power contest", when their beams of energy meet and the fighter's show up, it seems like they are even playing the game "Mortal Kombat", they are even moving their fingers like they are holding controllers.
"Does this have madness in it?"
Well, it has ancient Chinese gods, demons, sorcerers and immortals, and green flames, GREEN FLAMES.
Does that count?
I admit, I don’t wake up on Monday’s and Friday’s thinking, “oh, yay! Movie review day!” because I don’t remember it (I’m old, ya know). But when I get the notification, I’m like, “YAY!” 🥰
Same here. I also blame age ;)
I resemble that remark!
Fun fact: This movie is where the creators of Mortal Kombat got their idea for the game 🐉
Not surprising. Raiden is basically the Lightning of the Three Storms.

@@Kissamiess Exactly!
Lopan = Shang Taung
Jack Burton = Johnny Cage
Fuzzy Sewer Guy = Goro
Wang Chi = Liu Kang
The God Lopan must appease = Shao Kahn
Weng Kong Exchange = Out world
Rain = Kung Lao
Eddie = Jax
Gracie = Sonya
And more. Some were just inspiration and became more. Others were basically blueprints. Looking into it is quite interesting. I've always loved this film as a kid, couldn't tell you why but I did. Never seen anything like it before or after honestly. The mysticism, fantasy , martial arts, buddy cop comedy and everything else I don't know in any other film. Only other thing that comes close in my mind is Mortal Kombat lol
@@SayWHARadio When I first saw encountered Mortal Kombat, I was like "hey, that's the lightning guy with the hat from Big Trouble!"
@@Kissamiess Haha me too!
Little does Ashleigh BURTON know that Jack BURTON is her long lost uncle that never visits.
"You KNOW I'm just scared to death of just.... things ... in general." - Ashleigh
My new favorite quote xD
Chris: Requests "Big Trouble In Little China"
Me: "Not all heroes wear capes."
But if Chris wears a cape does that still mean he's a hero?
No capes, dahling!
