Book Repair on a Budget: Consolidating a Textblock

  • Sometimes, publishers' bindings tend to break apart at the spine where the adhesive fails or spine linings age. This is a demonstration of how to repair the textblock (pages of the book) when it has split.
    UPDATE: I am so sorry that I left out the name of the glue. It is polyvinyl acetate or PVA. White school glue, such as Elmer's, is PVA. Or, for a more archival version, search for neutral pH PVA. Thank you sooo much! Sooo simple! I wore out my favorite soft cover Bible which is now split in two. I had no clue how to put it back together - I thought it would be so much more complicated than it is and it's been in disrepair for many years. I now know how to put it back together thanks to your simple tutorial. Very grateful.🥰

    Hi! it was so cool to know I could fix some of my books this way!
    I have a sketch book that's glue bound and individual pages come spilling out of it...
    While having papers fall out in a public setting and having a cool person pick it up with you is a great, movie worthy scene, its wildly embarrassing to have it happen IRL
    Could you please suggest some methods to fix my sketch book or perhaps group them in a way through which I can keep them in a book form without loosing the details at the top of my drawings?
    Thank you!

      Ruth If your pages keep falling out then maybe you should get a spiral bound book cause those are sturdier.But if you can’t get one you could get paper clips and just clip a few pages together each time and then keep them in a little folder so that they wouldn’t spill out.Or you could just apply more pva glue on the spine.I think the spiral bound sketchbook are better.Just some suggestions

      @uncgarchives  2 роки тому +1

      Marsela, I am so sorry for the late reply. The glue is polyvinyl acetate (PVA), which is commonly known as wood glue, white glue, etc. Standard Elmer's white glue that schools use is what I was referring to. We use a more archival version (neutral pH) in conservation, but the standard school glue is the same type of adhesive. It is great for bookbinding because it dries clear and it remains flexible, so the book continues to function well. Thanks for your question, and again so sorry for the VERY late reply!

      Hi, Mike. I would say that it works best when there are just a few pages that are loose. Sometimes a more extensive repair is needed when there are multiple pages like this. It is worth a try though as long as your book isn't something very precious that you wouldn't want to mess up.

    • @uncgarchives
      @uncgarchives  2 роки тому

      Aditya, thank you for your question. I am not familiar with Fevicol. It looks like it works on wood or paper, but my question would be whether or not it remains flexible when it is dry. If it dries and is brittle, it wouldn't work well for this application. Also, I can't speak to the safety of Fevicol as a substance - looks like it has some potentially harmful chemicals in it. It's possible that it would yellow as it ages or else be too acidic for paper over time.

      @@uncgarchives It worked pretty great for me. I bought a trade paperback, that almost immediately started falling apart as soon as I started reading it. one section nearly came complete out, and that was causing other sections to start tearing away. I caused some minor damage myself to the spine being too aggressive with some inappropriate tools, but other than that, it worked perfectly. I've thumbed through it a few times and it seems it will hold up for me as long as I treat it with respect, or long enough to sell if I decide to do that. If I do sell it, I'll tell them that I rebound it myself, that's where the spine damage came from. THANKS!

      Hi, Ben. I am so sorry I am only now seeing your question. It looks like you received some good replies below. Wax paper is a good back up plan as well as just being very careful with where you apply the glue. The pages may not open quite as widely as before since they will be losing a little space at the margin. Just mask off the area with a strip of paper and you can be more careful to only get glue where you want it to be.
