In short - you can simply swap your domestic intake manifold onto the jdm 253.
I started cracking up when the pointy finger came out 😭
That’s the best way to show the goods!
Classic! 😂
I know this is an older video, but dang it’s great to have these options for the n/a Subies too, considering the great condition those jdm motors are in. As you correctly said, many more miles to add on to these cars and not a whole lot of money. Great job Jessie!
Absolutely dude! This is my wife’s car now at 305k it will easily get to 500k now
That looks "easy". Nice video thanks!
So first off just want to say thank you so much for posting this. I have a 2009 Forester X base model that recently started misfiring one #1, #2, & #4 all at the same time so it is just sitting right now. It is my daily so I need to get it back running and reliable. I was looking at the JDM EJ253 engines on eBay and they look super clean and at a reasonable price compared to the other options. I had read something about the cams and sensors not being compatible but it looks like that was incorrect info based on your success and lack of swapping any of that stuff. My vehicle has 179K on it and has been leaking oil for some time now. I recently replaced the plugs, wires, injectors, O2 sensors and an eBay exhaust manifold/header as the original one had cracked beyond repair. The car was running awesome for several weeks and then took a crap on me last Friday. So now I am trying to get all of my ducks in a row on this project. I'll replace the timing belt and assorted parts on the new engine as well as the valve cover gaskets plug seals. Also will throw a rear main seal in it while it's out and easy to get to. Is there anything else you can think of that might need to be addressed??? Again thanks for this awesome video it answered so many questions quickly for me.
Glad the vid could help! Ya its really as simple as removing your intake manifold as whole and putting it the jdm engine.
Id say for your while its out maintenance, youve got it cover pretty well!
Just trying to get my head around everything you did. So you took your OEM original engine harness that is located on the passenger side of the engine and swapped it over to the new JDM engine right? And you kept all of the engine sensors that were already installed on the JDM engine? So no need to swap sensors or anything else? Also these JDM engines have a different technology than our USDM engines called AVCS or AVLS? What is that and is it a higher performance technology? First time I'm hearing of it? Thanks again for the quick reply too!@@TheSubieSanctuary
Do you think the head gaskets should be done while I have the engine sitting in my lap?????@@TheSubieSanctuary
@@Albiemanmike headgaskets are optional.
Your 06-10 subaru would have factory avls/avcs. Its variable valve timing.
In short, you can actually just take your whole intake manifold off in 1 piece. With it comes fuel system attached, harness etc. Then you can just drop it on the jdm engine and fire it up! All the sensors attached to jdm engine will be the same as your domestic.
The only reason i swapped my harness onto jdm manifold was because my manifold was spray painted black at some point
@@TheSubieSanctuaryI know it’s been a while I apologize in the middle of doing this exact swap and I’m not sure if I can use the jdm knock sensor, crank position, and cam position sensors If you could enlighten me it would be greatly appreciated!
Sorry to bug ya again, did you have to swap cam sprockets? I finally got the jdm engine in the car but it doesn't start.
Sometimes you do have to swap the gears. Id first compare them before actually getting into swapping them since motor is already in car.
Because maybe it could be some other reason
You my friend have saved me!!! Thank you
Hey great Video!
I have an 07 Outback that I starved of oil and it started knocking. Only went 4000 since last oil change, try to go 3k but slacked :(. Anyways just purchased a JDM 253. I know the 07 outback for some reason used a 307 timing belt where other years used the 304. I am trying to buy an Aisin timing kit the tkf-006. Since the engine is from I believe a 2011 JDM legacy you don’t need to change the timing sprockets correct? Have you experienced this ever? I know I have to use the oil pickup and oil pan from my old engine and intake manifold but everything else should be plug and play right?
Hey there, so will this work in a 2003 Impreza ts? Any major parts I may need to change? I've heard something about dealing cams and cam gears?
I did this but put vacuum sealed catch cans one for valve covers to intake and one from psv to intake manifold. Enjoying this jdm 253 with AVLS
Definitely a great option! Compared to a tired used domestic one
Nice sport grill , need one for mine as well ...
hey man, this is a great video. best one i've seen for this swap. popping one into my 07 outback over the next couple weeks. got the intake manifold off USDM today.
regarding sticking with the JDM IM, you did the following
-you swapped the wiring harness, coil pack, and TB, yes?
-you ran a longer vacuum hose to the brake booster, correct? anything else of importance with that procedure?
-the JDM i have, excluding the blow by sensor (it has just some hose, no sensor) appears to have the same PCV set up as my USDM, so swapping over the hose with blow by sensor should be fine, correct?
anything else I'm overlooking?
thank you, sir!
Hey buddy! Glad it could be of some help.
The only reason I used jdm mani and fuel rail system was because it was better condition and you are correct in the items I swapped from usdm mani to the jdm one.
Let me know how you make out!
This car still working great to this day!
right on! thanks. I'm leaning toward the JDM mani and fuel rails for the same reason. mine are toast.
i'm assuming the wiring harness was held in place in the same/place as the USDM.
I'll update when done
@@TheSubieSanctuary
making headway... do you recall what size and length of vacuum hose you used to extend to the brake booster from passenger side? thank you! @@TheSubieSanctuary
@@esjaydee7748 unsure off hand? I feel like its maybe 3/8’s ID
right on, brother. thanks again. i'm glad to have seen this video and get inspired to use the JDM intake manifold. Most of the part #s on it match my USDM as well. such a nicer piece of machinery than what i've been driving!
@@TheSubieSanctuary
Great Video! did the exact same swap this passed weekend. I used the JDM Intake manifold but did not swap over the throttle body when I swapped over the wiring harness. I have a question for you though. My RPM's jump up 2k when the clutch is in and I'm braking. Do you think that is might be from the throttle body?
Very possible, i second guessed the jdm throttle body because I saw different part numbers. Other it could be a vac leak or ecu re learn
Also do you have the one way check valve in correctly for brake booster
best channel on youtube
perfect timing, thanks...i bought an '06 last year for 3k with 180k mi and drove great and was super clean over all... but last week i started throwing a misfire code...initial diagnostic and basic repairs were fine then it shifted cylinders and really started driving like crap... finally took it in to subaru and looks like dropped ex valves... =/ the cost is almost what i paid for the car (and only the heads) OR finding a jdm swap + labor.... buying a new/used car not really an option but what u gonna do? just seeing how feasible this is gonna be for them or whatever shop i take it to..if i do...thanks for the simple yet detailed video!
Thats a bummer for sure but im glad the video will help you out. These jdm motors are a excellent option for the money.
@@TheSubieSanctuary do you have any recommended JDM suppliers? is for the ej25 its gonna be around $2500 usd... would love to maybe pay 2k if possible but any one website/etc you like? thanks

I am curious about jdm swapping my car its a 2010 subaru impreza OBS USDM 5speed. This is honestly my first ever engine swap and wanted to make sure, if i buy the jdm ej253, will there be an issue if i put the usdm intake manifold and harness on it from the original motor. I ask because i want to ensure it works and have working and running motor Because this is my daily and want to keep this car.
I have done that exact swap into that exact car. Just swap your original intake manifold and check to make sure the coolant crossover is the same along with pcv system. Thats it and youll be good to go! Any questions feel free to ask!
hey, i really need your advice, I am rebuilding my 11" Subaru Legacy and want to rebuild the 253 with a new valves, valve springs, oil pump, water pump and anything else the motor shop want me to get. do you think it would be wiser for me to put a 255?
I would not even consider a 255, way too much work.
You can get a jdm 253 for your 11 legacy. Probably cheaper then repairing yours
I'm doing a JDM swap right now. Decided not to use the JDM intake due to not having TGV valve. How did you get yours to not throw a code? Any help will be greatly appreciated
Are you doing a non turbo swap like in video?
For this one i used the domeestic engine harness and coil pack. All plug and play after that. But i do have jdm turbo swap vids too if neededn
Some JDM suppliers are saying that I may need to change the crankshaft and camshaft timing gears. How do we tell if we need to swap them from the US engine to the JDM engine?
Its really uncommon youd have to change them. They say that simply as a disclaimer incase. How you would know is by taking a look at each to compare. Never had to change any cam gears or crank gears yet.
@@TheSubieSanctuary I measured across all four timing belt pulleys and they all measure exactly the same. And the crankshaft pulley appears to be the exact same one as the old engine. Man there is a lot of lawyer CYA posts out there!
HEY SS do you know if the Jdm spec has higher compression?? Like the turbo models?? And what difference’s are there between jdm 253 usdm 253??
They are same compression ratio in the non turbo’s. There is no physical or performance difference. They are wired differently due to the harness coming out on opposite side of engine along with jdm intake mani have the brake booster port on opposite side.
Hey I have a 2005 2.5rs and swapped to a 203. Would a ecu tune increase performance by a good margine or is it fine to keep the stock ecu?
It is fine to leave un tuned. We have same swap in one of our shop cars. Its done 20k now, no issues.
@@TheSubieSanctuary Would there be any noticeable performance benefits? My car doesn’t feel the same because of the weaker engine lol.
@@driplessplane3263 if you can find a local tuner to do an opensource tune on it. You may net a little bit of power not sure if worth it though vs cost
I have a 08 Impreza 2.5. I want to swap in a 2.0. Is that an easy swap? Was originally a Nissan guy so I don’t have subie experience.
Yes, its the same process as this. Youll need a 2.0 with avls
Did you have to swap over your original Crank Sprocket??
No i didnt, nor the cam gear.
However depending on your year and year of the donor engine. Its good piece of mind to at least visually compare both cam/crank gears.
Ive probably done 100+ jdm swaps into domestic subarus. Ive never once had to change cam gears or crank sprocket.
Its normally only the very early domestic subarus that have different cam/crank pick ups. Like 2001 and under kinda stuff
So do the AVLS PLUGS connect to your plugs. So it’s only manifold I need to replace ??
Yes everything just plugged in after swapping on the domestic intake manifold and harness in entirety
Hello sir, i have a 07 impreza 2.5 , what jdm will fit on it ? Can i do the samething that you have done ?
For the 07 impreza you would use the same jdm ej253 as I Used in the video.
Just swap your whole intake manifold and compare your coolant crossover pipe
Question.. does this engine have avls? I got a 06 forester sohc avls. Could I put in a jdm 2.0? Do the jdms come avls?
Yes this is the exact same engine as 06 forester and has avls. This is a jdm ej253.
Im unsure if they make a 2.0 with avls though.
@@TheSubieSanctuary darn. Yes I just called a jdm shop and they do not come avls for the 2.0. Looks like I got to pay more and buy a 2.5. Thx I appreciate the reply.
Stupid question… Can this swap pass California smog?
100% my friend, it is exactly as the original engine.
Looking to drop a new motor in my 06 outback this year. Is this swap just as simple? Swap the current intake to the jdm swap and it's plug and play?
Thats it! 06 outback will be exact same as this
@@TheSubieSanctuary my guy, you're a legend. Thanks for such a quick response, appreciate you taking the time to answer
278k Miles no oil burning or leaks.. but saving up for a JDM just in case!
Thats awesome!
Where did you buy your engine?
JDM Orlando.
It's not very clear what timing kit you put on JDM engine
Same as domestic ej253
Hello I’m swapping in a jdm ej253 into my 2001 Subaru rs with the ej251 and do I need to change the cam gears and timing sprocket or can I use the jdm one it shows u use the jdm ones in this video let me know but from what I’ve read I gotta replace the timing sprocket and cam gears thanks!
You will have to match your orig crank and cam pulley. I believe in your case you will have to use your original ones on the jdm motor.
The most noticeable difference will be the teeth on crank pulley. Your original motor probably has just a few teeth where as your donor motor will likely have many fine teeth
@@TheSubieSanctuary okay a bit confused so the motor coming out of the rs I just need to match them? With the jdm ones or take off the og rs engine put on the jdm engine in this video I think u used the jdm cam and crank pulley
@@highleveldesign4830 whatever style your rs originally had must be used. Unless the jdm engine already has the matching gears.
It will be 1 type or the other between the 2 motors.
Thank you
So the Jdm ej253's are dohc?
No they aren’t, but there are jdm na dohc’s 2.0’s and 2.5’s but they are ej204, ej25d
hey i have a 2008 impreza 2.5 i, would a "2010-2011-2012 SUBARU LEGACY SOHC 2.5L JDM MOTOR EJ25 AVLS PLASTIC INTAKE ENGINE" work by just swapping my intake manifold, and wiring harness. if not what other engines around 1600-1800 would work as a jdm swap for me im lost tbh
We have used the plastic manifold ones, i would not recommend it and I would never personally use one again.
Spark plugs holes are too deep for domestic valve covers, oil pan does not bolt up, requires drill and tap.
@@TheSubieSanctuary ah okay, thank you
@@TheSubieSanctuary are the JDM plastic manifold 253's any different from the USDM ones with a plastic manifold? I am looking into this swap for my 2011 Legacy 2.5i and my stock engine appears to have a plastic manifold so wondering if the JDM engines of the same year with the plastic manifold are the same?
@@ashyyah do not attempt to use the 10-12 2.5 in your 08. It can work but its are horrible and sketchy swap to do.
Otherwise there arent really any other options other then the obvious

They are MLS, multi layer steel. Same as domestic ones
What ever it has it will fail at 100000 miles. Mine has and I'm at the second time at 240k miles.
Should never fail a second time if done right the first time.

When you say the coil pack had a different plug did you simply de pin and re pin a connector?
You likely could re pin
@@TheSubieSanctuary what did you do to change the plug
@@mikey2HandsPC i used domestic harness and coil pack.
@@TheSubieSanctuary perfect, so I can reuse my wire harness and throttle body? And keep the jdm manifold for the neat fuel and PCv routing?

I have a 09 legacy that just began to knock would I be able to put a 2010 legacy motor in mine plug n play?
No it wont, 2010 legacy is plastic intake manifold and few other differences. Can be made to work but even more difficult then the swap in this video
