I worked for Lloyd's Register for many years, now retired. I was with the San Francisco Office and we actually had many yachts in San Francisco Bay, many staying in the Sausalito area. You did a very good job of explaining what certification is and why it's needed. I'm happy to have found your channel. It just popped up about 2 weeks ago. I enjoyed your video on what crew do when in port and yacht not being used. That happens a lot in our area. Anyway, thanks for this channel.
Holy cow. That's huge! I grew up on a lot of smaller yachts, 40 to 80 feet. You can't cross into other countries territorial ports without insurance... Best you can do is anchor in a remote cove. Things may be different now but insurance on a big boat is critical.
@M W Would you trust a Russian insurance company to pay up if something went wrong? Should a port authority trust that they will pay liability if they damage another craft or some of the harbor's infrastructure? Other insurance companies want to know that you won't be doing anything irresponsible, like refusing a boarding and getting shot at by navies on the open seas. If they aren't concerned about that then they may not be the kind of insurer that ports will accept as legitimate.
Do the Russian oligarchs actually own these yachts or are they on finance like the majority of the private jets that finance companies are trying to repossess?
Good sources. Your highlighting of the class society issue is smart. Thanks for saying that all Russians do not support the war. This needs to be said.
Wife and I were on a cruise few years ago and we were docked next to Eclipse for the day in ST Marteen. Sat on the veranda and watched them load 3 semi-trucks of fuel that morning left for the day and watched 4 more load before we left. It's not a boat, it's a ship. Like 530 feet of ship! It made the semi-trucks look like Hot wheel cars next to a real car!
At least 7 semi tankers of fuel is nothing to laugh at. Mind you with the world wide jump in fuel prices it's going to hurt someone's bank account even more. Actually, with the financial sanctions in effect, just how will they pay for the fuel and provisions?
Putin's Russian military actually can, and does, refuel these things sometimes. Remember, oligarchs are part of the top-level mafia "family" ruling the Russian people right now, and these ships are often tools of the KGB, military, spy agencies, etc.

Big fan of your work for years now and marine (re)insurance broker here. Nice report on the de-classification of the superyachts leading to them being uninsured due to breach of warranty. I suspect most sanctioned oligarch's superyachts are now uninsured and have been for a while, at least by western insurers, due to the sanctions and limitations exclusion clauses included in every policy which basically prevents insurers to pay any claim that would expose them to a sanction imposed by EU, UK, US, etc. Going around with such expensive toys without insurance is a major risk, especially for third parties that could be affected by the superyachts' operation. Thanks for your videos, keep up the good work!
Panama can likely not allow them through, considering if they were attacked. They can self I sure... "If the are successful at this every businessman's assets are next!"N.Maria
Not as easy as "self-insuring" the yacht. Most countries make the Protection & Indemnity (P&I) coverage compulsory for navigating their waters - that's the insurance that covers the liability for the use and ownership of the yacht - reasoning behind this being the pollution and environmental damage this vessels are capable of producing. Mind you, for superyachts, the limit of the P&I coverage is in the hundreds of millions of dollars per event region - that's just how big a claim in one single incident can be.
At the very least, they would have to provide a "Guaranteed Letter of Credit" for liability for millions of dollars (if they were to self-insure), but who's going to sign off on that? No way around the mess they are in even if trying to play shell games..
I 100% agree with Alex Madeira. You are an invaluable source of reliable and useful information for those of us armchair watching this from our homes. Great update again and I agree that the Lloyds register will be an enormous deal in the future. Those ships won't be welcome in many hot spots around the world anymore. If there is one way to hit the oligarchs it is by taking away their toys. I foresee a lot of these vessels coming on the market pretty soon. With their assets frozen paying for the upkeep will become impossible.
Dave Just asking the Question. With all the money they have, could they not hire a tug and fuel barge to fuel them out in the water. Make them pay a higher cost for fill up. You know just like us Pesky working class that are paying double at pumps now.
Not "won't be welcome". They literally will not be able to enter any ports. Just the public liability issues will render them an untenable risk to have in your port.
@@rp1645 problem is that all their credit cards, most of the bank accounts etc have been blocked. On top of that, there are not a lot of fuel ships around, so en route replenishing is not really an option. these ships are going to be sitting for years with no crews, no maintenance, etc. they'll never be sold on the open market. billionaires would buy a new ship.

Q: You say "Lloyds has withdrawn services to all Russian ships" (or "to Russia" as the article says). Does this matter? I thought ALL of these ships were registered outside Russia and MOST of them had their Russian owners identity masked through shell corporations and management companies (both also not Russian)
Port of registration and certifying authority are two separate things. You could have your super yacht registered in ANY port, however, which insurer will touch something certified by Joe Random of Biloxi, Mississippi when Lloyds is the standard?
@@lancer2204 My point wasn't to do with Lloyds or NOT Lloyds as certifying authority,... it was in what way are any of these super yachts "Russian" as defined by the new Lloyds restrictions. They're not registered in Russia and their Russian ownership is often secret. If these boats are registered in Panama and managed by Cayman Island companies (with no other visible ownership), Lloyds sanctions don't apply. Perhaps these Lloyds sanctions apply to some tug or ferry in Vladivostok or some coastal bulk carrier, but not these Super Yachts.
Amazing job, it's awesome to learn about a whole other realm of things that go on in the world that the average person doesn't know about including myself, right down to the insurance on the vessels. What would tick them off really is if everyone refused to recognise that Russian certificate as a valid maritime requirement. Keep up the good work mate, you're the only one who is keeping me abreast of developments regarding the Ukraine situation, after all there is a lot of little side dramas, which are more interesting to hear about.
I really, really enjoyed this video. I’m a 76 year old grandmother in Texas. No cruising experience. It’s so interesting about the Russian super yachts losing their certifications which means no insurance. I’m so happy that most of the countries are invoking sanctions against Russia. Thank you for sharing this news.
Been a fan of your channel for a long time but it’s so good to see it taking off so much right now as you deliver this really awesome insight. Keep on smashing it Esysman! Just one question, the majority of these yachts are flagged in Cayman Islands or Marshall Islands, perhaps Bermuda sometimes (MY & SY A), so would they actually be considered Russian by LR?
Enjoying your insight on this subject, thank you. Based on your knowledge, why are these super yachts still being allowed to be registered in countries such as Cayman Islands & Bermuda, both are British Overseas Territory (Nord, Madame Gu & Scheherazade / Eclipse & Solaris) & what impact would them being de-registered have on their abilities to sail the seas?
For a flag of convenience you need just a Shell corporation in one of this countries. This Shell corporation is not registered with the name of any Russian vessel owner. Everybody knows who's vessel it is and who pays for it, but most of the time it's very difficult to follow this line from one shell corporation to the next and next... Same with there numbers bank accounts. From one to there next and so on. When as example the Chelsea owner Abramowitch pay on of his players some "extra money" this money will see 4-5 different banks in different countries. All this banks make money with this and also the sender and recipient because of saving a lot of taxes. Same with the vessels, houses, etc. they have.
The UK is very good at hiding illicit assets and tax avoidance via it's network of 'Crown protectorates' and other offshore tax havens and homes for stolen money. In fact after Russia the present UK government are among the most corupt on earth.
Thanks for reminding folks all Russians are not Putin. My heart goes out to all Russians today. Everyone with something ugly to say about Russia, please remember none of us had a choice in the sperm and egg lottery that brought us onto this earth. My thoughts, my resolve and all the limited resources I have remain with Ukraine, of course, but also with the Russian soldiers and citizens who’s only crime was being born in Russia. May the US, NATO, and the UN, end this war. #closethesky & with love to all. -jom
Honestly, great work! All so fascinating. I thought I was doing quite well being moored close by S/Y Athena in Red Hook (St Thomas), but these are vessels on a whole different level. Keep 'em coming.
Like many recent subs I know little about these mega yachts but have found your content to be enlightening. I feel for the ordinary employees on these boats that are losing their jobs but these things are just symbols of corruption and the burgeoning disparity in wealth distribution.
You are right, but remember to make judgements on an individual basis. I have lived in a small starter home, never gone on vacations, never owned a new car. Never even had new furniture except once from 'floor model clearance'. I bought that starter house when the market was crashed and will be selling it for a massively higher price, and liquidating every other asset to move to Europe this year. Depending on how my new business venture goes, I'll be buying a boat, possibly nice enough to envy, in 3 to 5 years. It'll probably be from the 80s or 90s and some of the remodeling I'll do myself. People will look at my boat and assume I'm wasting money. But I'll be using her for charter, so much like buying a fancy house that you live in and run as a B-and-B, I'll be running a 'lifestyle business' where you make just enough profits to live a nicer lifestyle. The charters will only pay for the running/maintenance costs. Not all yacht owners are wasteful. I plan to make her green with solar and other alternative energy, and I found a good philanthropy group that lets you sign up to use your boat to study saving the oceans, endangered marine life, etc. Mega yachts are different, of course. I saw one last week, online, that had REAL silver flake paint on the whole ship, plus real gold flake paint on the huge radar mast. Not obscene enough, it also had a gas turbine, like a damn jet, that drank so much fuel per hour it made me angry. So I totally agree there is a level of pointless luxury that is morally wrong, when others starve and do without medical care (like I am right now, since Covid cost both income and insurance and I am stuck in the US for the moment). But, it's important not to assume guilt just because someone has something nice. They may have done without for many years to attain that. I'm not assuming you think that way, by the way. I just see a lot of comments lately that assume all yacht owners are part of the 1%, or comments from born weathly types callously caring more for yachts than refugees. It feels like two sides are forming, and both are posting pretty vitriolic things (eat the rich vs bootstraps). I guess I'd just like to inject a little nuance. My own family members will likely act like I 'won' a lottery, forgetting all the years they took 10k cruises, bought 50k cars, all on credit, while I have no debt (and shopped at thrift stores, before Covid!). Sorry for the long comment, but if this turns into a protracted global war, it will be between classes, not countries. It makes me nervous, because the current language doesn't leave much room for a successful middle class.
@@OG_Wonder_Woman "but if this turns into a protracted global war, it will be between classes, not countries" That is a good point. In my utterly worthless opinion.
@@OG_Wonder_Woman The difference between other superyacht owners and the Russian oligarchs is, they all made their fortunes when the USSR fell. They did so through cronyism and corruption, like Putin. None of them worked their way up from the bottom, none of them come from generations of wealth, since such things theoretically did not exist in communist Russia. So it is very easy to judge the oligarchs that own superyachts. These men are Putin's inner circle and have the most influence over him than anyone else in the world.
@@OG_Wonder_Woman Well there might be some cheap mega yachts on sale at government auctions so keep your eyes open. I own a kayak so that’s what I know about such things. It's reasonable to surmise that they're all heading to Vladivostok, albeit in somewhat circuitous routes in in some cases, so that they can have that 'inspection' to gain recertification via the Russian agency. I imagine that, just as you alluded to, some way has been found for them to be granted temporary paperwork so that they can fuel up & provision for the crew enroute.

There are other observers of the yacht industry that wonders if Vladivostok would be able to properly service these boats. Could maintenance become an issue for these yachts if they are stuck there for long?
Service them mechanically? Sure. Fuel them? Definitely. Keep them in the opulent state they arrived in? Not likely. They will have to create a yard with the ability to work on these kinds of finishes and appointments... which given the wealth of the owners is certainly feasible. But without the ability to import materials and technology due to sanctions they will have a tough time. So they will be fitted out with Chinese tech and Russian materials... not really how they were designed or built.
@@simeon2851 Let them know. Like now Russia will start becoming industrial again. Once you have your own food and fuel you don't need any partners, especially The UE and USA. Their other exports such a banking, tourism etc will cave in but Russia will survive because other people will take the oil at a cheaper rate and fuck over their present contracts with other countries.

One other thing that’s been missed is what has happened to Alisher Usmanovs yacht he bought while Dilbar is getting work done. Lady Gulya/ Alieya/ Tis. Nothing mentioned about this one.
These Lloyds (et al) registry de-certifications and consequent invalidated insurance may be one explanation of the crew reductions: an owner or manager and a captain may not want to risk self insuring their crews and of course one mitigation is to lighten that load of risk by as it were tossing them offboard.
It may seem to me that turning off the location devices may be more of ghosting the boats to get items or persons off the boat just in case it is held or searched...then turn them back on this way if stopped... let it authority do their duties because it's not worth the fight ...beautiful boats caught up in a terrible situation...my condolences to the innocent crewmen that lose good honest wages. With over 1400 comments so far, this may have been addressed, but: does anyone know if a non-certified/insured vessel is permitted to use the Panama Canal locks? I have passed through them, but it was a long time ago and I cannot remember if that was one of the mandatory papers. If not....that last vessel you mentioned might be in Gatun for...a long...time.
Its registration to the yacht like dmv for a vehicle no register no insurance you cant go into any port like driving a car without registration same thing. You wouldnt do it as a millionaire either or you go to territory friendly , friends back yard ie turkey and park it.

Things may be different now but insurance on a big boat is critical.
be a shame if any of them got caught by pirates
@@wupet sure would....
@@squireson Under sanctions, it's possible that Russian Certifications may even be suspended. Worth a bit of research.

Youre doing a great job mate. Thanks for keeping us all up to date.

Can they be self-insured??
would the Panama Canal allow an uninsured yacht through?

Great update again and I agree that the Lloyds register will be an enormous deal in the future. Those ships won't be welcome in many hot spots around the world anymore. Just asking the Question.
Does this matter? I thought ALL of these ships were registered outside Russia and MOST of them had their Russian owners identity masked through shell corporations and management companies (both also not Russian)

Just one question, the majority of these yachts are flagged in Cayman Islands or Marshall Islands, perhaps Bermuda sometimes (MY & SY A), so would they actually be considered Russian by LR?
$500m boat without insurance. That just sounds like a nightmare. I would want to get it docked as fast as possible. That is just nasty.
Same with the vessels, houses, etc. they have.

@@OG_Wonder_Woman "but if this turns into a protracted global war, it will be between classes, not countries"

@@OG_Wonder_Woman The difference between other superyacht owners and the Russian oligarchs is, they all made their fortunes when the USSR fell. So it is very easy to judge the oligarchs that own superyachts. These men are Putin's inner circle and have the most influence over him than anyone else in the world.

It's reasonable to surmise that they're all heading to Vladivostok, albeit in somewhat circuitous routes in in some cases, so that they can have that 'inspection' to gain recertification via the Russian agency. I would be so pissed if I were a man and owned one of these , (that one so beautiful you didn'nt know you want it till you see it exists ) pissed at Putin if I had to park my toy....pissed
Question: Outside of family and friends, does anyone around the Seven Seas really feel sorry for these Russian (or any) oligarchs? Does Putin? (Sorry, that was a second question, but I'll answer it: not likely.)
Yeah a lot of folks leave you’re echo chamber
Great reports mate. Keep them coming!
Thank you for the info!
