  • Today I am replacing the clock spring on a 2007 Pontiac G5. This car has an issue with the air bag light on and the horn does not work. The process is identical for the Chevy Cobalt of similar years.

My wife's Cobalt was getting an airbag warning when the steering wheel was turned either way, and it disappeared when you straightened the wheel back out. I figured, Clock Spring. I bought one, and weekend before last started to replace it. Got the airbag off, but the wires were twisted up so tight that i had to spin the bag a few times to get enough slack to take off the connectors. Got the nut off, but no wiggling would get the wheel to move at all. Thought i might break it, i wiggled so hard.
So, put it all back together and drive to the auto parts store to borrow a puller. They didnt have one. But i had noticed the airbag warning hadn't come back. I did some lock-to-lock turns in the parking lot. No light. And in the weeks since, no light.
Word to the wise. Dont wind up the airbag wires too tight. Now I have an extra Clock Spring. I'll try to return it.

Was the battery in the truck on the car ?

Yes it is, it seems more and more companies are putting batteries in the trunk. I find it a bit of a pain when you need to boost them.

@@nothandsomebuthandyA lot of cars have a + jump terminal under the hood. Our Cobalt does.

Yes they do the job but still not as good as a direct connection to the battery. It's hard enough to get a good connection with booster cable clamps not to have more voltage drop with an extra 20' of wire between the terminal to the battery and back.
