Your presentation and being detailed in all the information you covered was outstanding! I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video, especially covering the firmware. Respect from Texas.
You my friend are one great instructor! I am thinking of purchasing one of these recorders and I learned a lot from your video. Thank you for the patience in putting together a professional recording and review. Now to decide if I want it or not! Take care!
Glad I could help! These little cameras are well worth the money, if you are aware of its limitations ... It is better suited to scenes with good lighting, closer proximity, external mic (or line in) if possible, and avoid getting sunlighted areas as well as shaded areas in your field of view (dynamic range is not so fantastic) On a side-note, the Q2n is pretty much the same optically as the Q8n, just a different housing and different connections...
Very well done sir! TY...so I guess Ill watch your video again BC My camera is new- a 4k on the front..But YOU cautioned against ones with 4k on it ..so, I'm hesitant! I just got it, I dont want to break it!
Hey there!! I probably cautioned against the version WITHOUT the 4K printed on the front ... it should not be updated with the 4K firmware ... If your camera does say 4K then you are good to update !! But, it only improves the Webcam function, as far as I know ...
I could not reach zoom directly. I thank you for posting this video. I was FINALLY able to update my firmware following your instructions. Appreciate your help.
At the Zoom website, there is also a Driver available that Windows may need in order to recognize your Q2n4K ... That needs to be downloaded and installed if you have not already done so .. once you download that file, double-clicking the download will activate it's install... (If it is a zip file, as it was in this video, you'll need to double click the zipfile, open the folder inside, and double click the file in the folder in the zipfile !! LOL I could make a video for that as well ...
All well and good but having owned 4 of these, the video quality is not up to standard. Nowhere near hd. Having tried ALL settings over the last few years the video quality lets this cam down imo. This is a known issue where you would have to have decent lighting when you are using the Zoom. Low lighting situations…forget it! The mics are top quality. More recently I’ve started using my iPhone with it and using the iPhone for the video with the Zoom taking the audio recordings. Works well. Never tried the webcam feature you are referring to…although the difference when you show comparison between 720p and 1080p is noticeable, is nowhere near normal 1080p standard.
I do agree, but you can help this little camera by just limiting the dynamic range of light you're trying to capture in any given scene ... The dynamic range for a camera is in regards to bright areas vs darker areas .. and this camera does have a limited dynamic range. So, in a darkly lit club where the stage is lit up with coloured lights, bring the camera closer to the stage, and avoid trying to capture any of the darker dancefloor/audience areas. Try to fill your field of view with just the brightly lit stage area ... zooming in also reduces the camera's ability to get a cleaner image, so its much better to go closer instead (maybe only zoom in 1 level, but not much more)
I've also seen people making videos of a band outside, in daylight. Some of the stage was in direct sunlight, some of the stage was in the shade.. this is also too much dynamic range, and the Q series cannot capture both areas at the same time. They should have come much closer to the stage, and just get the sunlit areas, or the shaded areas in any scene. Not both together ... or from far away. Their results were not awesome .
I'm sorry to say this, but the 720p resolution looks like 480p and your 1080p resolution looks like 720p. I have a 1080p monitor, your video image quality even with the setting on 1080p is worse - resolution and sharpnesswise - than the other 1080p content I watch on youtube. I wonder why this is. Compression might be a factor, but there must be something else going on. The Zoom recorder has several settings (wide angle, mid and near as I remember, I do not own the Q2n but there a some reviews of this recorder available on youtube). Now if a crop setting was selected, only the center part of the 4k sensor will be read out. I don't know, but maybe the nearest crop setting crops out something smaller than 1080p. Or maybe it is a focus issue. With 1080p in good quality, the strings on your guitar should be razor sharp and the writing should be easily readable. In case the poor image quality is due to youtube compression, you could try to upscale your 1080p video to 4k (or at least 2,4 k) and upload the upscaled version to youtube. That way, the quality loss due to youtube recompression will be smaller.
Thanks for your feedback .. I admit I am on a learning curve, and thinking back, I believe you're right ... The camera at times was farther away, like 8 ft ... and then I believe I zoomed in more than the camera's own cropping in post editing at those times ... later, the camera was within arms' reach and the results were far more clear when not zooming and not post-edit zooming .. the learning never ends !!
You are using as a Webcam? How are you connecting ?? If there is Lag, it must be caused by something in the USB chain, or the processor/ram, or maybe software running in the background ... If I can, will gladly try to help ...
@@the_michaelsphereI had it connected using a USB. I wanted to use it as a web cam for giving lessons and posting guitar related content and this is what zoom recommended.
So, assuming you did the fw-update, and have 1080p, the next thing is the USB .. are there other things also plugged into your USB as well? Are you using a USB hub?
Such a great instruction that wasn’t explained on the official website! Thank you so much!

Thank you for this information very helpful indeed. I’ve had my Q2n4k now for a year and always thought it should be better resolution.

You're welcome !! And thanks for the heads-up on another new firmware release ... I was unaware of that ...
Very helpful. Thank you, Michael.
Very welcome!
So glad this was helpful !! Q2n has turned out to be a very useful webcam/usb mic for all my videos !!
Thanks for sharing, it was very helpful
You are so welcome! It makes it all worthwhile to make a video like this, when someone finds it helpful at all !!!
My q2n4k is not being recognized at all by my notebook with win 11, even with the firmware updated. Any clues? Thanks for the video though
