  • Watch this video about the legendary Pilatus PC-6 Porter and discover why it has become known around the world for its amazing STOL capabilities, high reliability and versatility in all weather and terrain conditions. In this video you can see the difference between a piston-driven Porter and one equipped with a turboprop engine.
The V-622 Pilatus PC-6 Turbo of Porter of Patrouille Suisse is powered by a single Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprop engine and can take off and land in just a few hundred feet, making it the perfect choice for short-haul missions in demanding environments. With a proven track record of over 60 years in service, the PC-6 is truly a legend in the aviation industry.
The other 2nd Pilatus Porter PC-6 N283SW is one of the very last piston engine powered Porters still in operation. The Pilatus Porter has become a legendary aircraft. The prototype Pilatus Porter HB-FAN, nicknamed "Yeti", managed an entry in the "Guinness Book of Records" for the world record of the highest landing by a fixed-wing aircraft. The "Yeti-Porter" landed on the Dhaulagiri glacier in Nepal at an altitude of 18,865 feet (5,750 m). Sadly, the original "Yeti-Porter" crashed in the Himalaya on 5th Mai 1960 . Now an accurate replica of the machine has been made airworthy again. The gorgeous Yeti-Himalaya retro paint scheme pays tribute to the PC-6 prototype.
The Pilatus Porter is a single-engined STOL utility aircraft which was manufactured by Pilatus Aircraft of Switzerland for 63 years (from 1959 to 2022). This piston engine powered PC-6 was built in 1962 and is one of very last remaining operational worldwide. All other Pilatus Porters are equipped with Turboprop engines. The piston engine is a powerful and durable Lycoming IO-540, six cylinder, air-cooled, turbocharged, fuel injected engine developing 360 hp at up to 2,700 RPM.
The Pilatus Porter PC-6 is the most popular and successful STOL utility aircraft ever made. With over 600 delivered in 63 years, it has been operated in more than 60 countries on all continents by over 100 different operators. It has been used for a wide variety of missions, including passenger and cargo transport, skydiving, glider towing, air ambulance, aerial spraying, and even as a military close air support aircraft.
    Goodbye Pilatus PC-6 Porter!

Thank you for this video. It is of special interest to me as I owned and operated N283SW for 13 years in Alaska. I was sad to see it go, but was honored to see it restored as the Yeti Porter.

Thank you very much for your nice comment. It was amazing to see this piston-driven Porter back in Switzerland. It is a great wish come true for me. I have read its story at McCarthy Air before. It must be a very beautiful place in Alaska. Your comment was a nice surprise and really honors me. Thank you so much and all the best!!!

The last piston Pilates I saw was in the early 80’s flying jumpers. It was slow to altitude compared to the turbines.

It is sad news to learn of the crash, and death of a pilot, may he rest in peace.
On an unrelated note: I have only just now noticed the debris deflectors near to the wheels of the red and white machine. Like little "brooms", I can see how they would be effective, as they are similar to the "hula skirts" on some tractor-trailer units. Near to the top/sides of the trailer's wheels, there are brush type deflectors, mostly seen on UPS company trailers. I worked as a truck driver for quite a while, and we always called them "hula skirts"! Just a dumb story, but that's what the aeroplane's "brooms" reminded me of!
