    Important to understand that predators are often charming and charismatic. They come across as safe, otherwise they wouldnt be able to prey on people. We watch movies and TV and the bad guys always look like obvious bad guys. You can tell right away who the bad guy is. In real life it's not like that and too many people think they can trust someone just because of some vibe they get. Real bad guys know how to seem safe.

    Excellent video, Thom. "Grooming" is not an act performed only by the perpetrators of sexual assault. Grooming also happens when societal norms allow individuals like CB to get away with their acts, and it begins very early. I am an elementary school teacher. A student in a building I worked in (aged 10) groped two girls in his classroom on the same day. The principal treated it very lightly. During a meeting the parents of the girls she stated "Boys will be boys." There was no suspension or other punishment, not even a request to make amends. The student went on to continue that behavior as he got older. There needs to be an across the board admission that as a society we fail women throughout their lives. We as a society need to look in the mirror when asking the question "Where do these 'men' come from?" Thank You for addressing this topic.

      There are other sides of this coin. I have a good friend who's son is a HS senior. He started being friends with this girl in his class and when she came onto him and he refused, she accused him of raping her in the school bathroom. Even though she had been caught making false accusations before, the guy was put through the ringer, even though the school had video footage that proved her wrong and she changed her story three times.
      Finally he was off the hook, but what happened to her? Nothing. She is still attending the same school and they just told him to stay away from her.

    • @sisterpamop
      @sisterpamop Місяць тому

      @porcupinecraig I previously was a college advocate for sexual violence and partner abuse, so I am going to push back more than Everest Mystery. 1. You are relating a second-hand story from a friend. This is not objective evidence and naturally you will tend to believe your friend. 2. I never, ever met a perpetrator who admitted to the crime. They always deny. 3. False reports are extremely rare. If you falsely reported your wallet stolen, that would be more common than falsely reporting a crime of sexual violence. 4. A vast majority of crime of this nature is never reported.

For the time I was very small, my mother told me if I felt strange or uncomfortable in a situation that just doesn’t seem right-get out of there, get to a safe place if possible. I’m not saying it’s 100% accurate, but if it comes to safety and I notice a red flag, I’m paying attention. I’m teaching my children the same. Be prepared, try to love your life and enjoy it, but sometimes those gut feelings have meaning!❤

      I was abused as a child from ages 5-13 and I didn’t tell anyone about it until I was 29 years old. My depression and PTSD was so bad that I tried to remove myself from the planet at 29. I ended up in a mental health facility for the first time and finally found myself around others who had been through similar things and for the first time ever, I told what my childhood was actually like.
      People that blame people for not immediately coming forward are humans who are lucky enough that they haven’t been through that kind of trauma, and therefore can’t seem to understand the inexplicable amounts shame that comes along with being victimized!

I get so tired of those comments that a woman must be lying about s.a., either just be cause she's a woman, or because she didn't fight back, or because she waited so long to speak out. It still amazes me that folks will step up to defend a person just because of their status and totally disregard the suffering of the victims. It is so important to talk about this and to help stop the victim shaming and blaming that goes on when SA is involved. People also need to remember that when one speaks out against a victim of SA their daughters, sisters, wives, friends and all women who are in ear shot know who they cannot trust talk to about it should it ever happen to them, is that what they really want to convey ? I hope this video helps change the attitudes of those who felt compelled to comment on your previous video, which was also excellent by the way. Cheers from Brasil!

    I was the victim of sexual harassment at work, and the short version is that when I fully realized what had happened and was in crisis, I became the problem since the perpetrator had quit. I went from an appreciated employee to an issue because I was traumatized by something someone else did to me, I received no compassion from my boss and was basically told to just get over it since I wasn't actually raped, it was just an attempt so I had no reason to feel anything about it.
    That's a reality for a lot of victims, we become the problem if we say something

    • @KSparks80
      @KSparks80 Місяць тому

      I don't mean you any disrespect, but I am trying to understand something that seems to happen often. From the time that the harassment happened, how much time passed before you "fully realized what had happened and was in crisis"? I don't get the time gap between the event, and when it gets reported. Seems like it happens quite often. How would waiting to report it, or not report it at all, have any chance of working out better than reporting it immediately after it happens?

    • @Louiseonajourney
      @Louiseonajourney Місяць тому

      @@KSparks80 it didn't occur to me that someone would slip a roofie in my drink at a work conference, so I guess I tried to find some reason as to why I got so sick and the only reasonable explanation I could come up with when it happened was that I was on a new medication and must have had some weird interaction.
      I rarely drink alcohol and I had never done drugs so I didn't recognize the signs of what happened until a friend pointed out that what I described as the worst hangover of my life was exactly what happens when some drugs leave your system.
      If it had happened at a bar I probably would have suspected something, but at a work dinner?
      It might have been naive of me but the thought of getting drugged by a colleague never occurred to me at the time

    • @KSparks80
      @KSparks80 Місяць тому

      @@Louiseonajourney Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. But, that's not really the type of "incident" I was talking about. That being situations where the person doing the actual harassing or abuse is known by the victim, yet they wait a long period of time, sometimes years, before coming forward and making the allegations.Those are the ones that make no sense to me. Why wait if it happened? (Hope that makes sense).

    • @Louiseonajourney
      @Louiseonajourney Місяць тому +1

      @@KSparks80 I think there can be a lot of reasons, the victim might not be in a position to take on that fight while they're trying to cope with the trauma or they're afraid of not being believed or they're in denial about what happened, etc.
      It's not unusual that victims come forward years later, so I guess there's some psychological explanation for why it might take some time

    That's a very sensitive topic. Thanks for this video. I've never experienced sexual harrassment outdoors. However, I think, almost every woman has experienced sexual harrassment at least once in their lives - at work, on public transportation, on the street.... It happens all the time and it's difficult for a woman to react properly when it happens. Sometimes it's somethimg small, a slight touch or even only words, sometimes it's more and sometimes it's been done by people they have trusted. That's the worst experience of all. Women are ashamed when this happens. They ask themselves, is it my fault? Have I encouraged them? This is wrong!! It's not our fault! It's always their fault! We have to speak up! Always! Even when there is just a slight touch on the bus. This behaviour is not acceptable and I don't tolerate people who blame the victims either.

      Yeah, telling about how dumb humans are. There will always be predators both men and women. They just work differently when they do it. The fact is that your chances of the man or woman you come across being that is really low in actuality. Your chances of being eaten by a bear that you run into though... That's a much higher chance. Bears aren't f*****g cuddly and lovable friends we haven't met yet. They will eat your intestines while you're still alive. This whole bear vs man thing is absolutely idiotic on a sublime new level. The answer to the question why he was allowed to do this for so long is incredibly simple. Because justice system failed catastrophically. It is the obvious and clear reason! There has been a mountain of evidence at least since 2008 that this person is a violent sociopath. It's incredibly important to highlight these topics but I find it counterproductive to try to frame it as somehow climbing community enabling this behavior. In several limited instances where other climbers could take action, they did! But otherwise, it's 20/20 hindsight. I find it strange that the focus of the article is the climbing community instead of abject, utter and inexcusable failure of the justice system which, unlike the climbing community, had all the necessary information and resources to actually DO SOMETHING.

    This is going on now at the "Black Swan" murder trial. The woman, Ashley Benefield, claims she shot her estranged husband in self defense. Despite evidence of the husband's unhinged behavior, and mental state, some comments insist she was manipulative and made him do it. The majority of comments from people who have experienced DV, tend to believe her, but the audience is extremely polarized. Someone opined that the comments against the woman sounded like they came from the 1950's instead of the present day.

I once went on a yoga course run by a very well known, charismatic, teacher who resigned from the world governing body after having relations with a student. There is a certain percentage of people across all cultures and society that are evil predators; this guy Barrett was one of them. It has less to do with climbing and women's safety in climbing, although climbing locations are typically more remote, so there is greater danger for women.

      it's not evil. it's entitlement. it's being socialized and conditioned to view women as objects for consumption. sociopathy is so rare.. there's no way every woman i know has been abused by 'evil' men. these men are 'loving husbands', 'good fathers', 'talented young men' with 'promising careers', walking through the world as respected and admired members of their communities. the subjugation of women is a larger cultural issue that even good men can perpetuate... and we have to recognize that in order to be able to change it.

    In my estimation, male dominated communities of any ilk will protect those they consider “their own” against charges of any sexual misbehaviour, up to and including rape. This is substantiated by the fact that even after beating a woman in front of witnesses, this community somehow refused to condemn this guy and wanted to believe a weak made up story. Women need to learn and truly appreciate the dangers of participating in these kinds of communities and never believe that members will “have their back” regardless of how nice the boys are. I don’t believe this will ever change.
    As to you deleting the “most obtuse” comments, I believe this was a mistake. as I said, women need to learn, we need to see these things, look them in the eye, and make our judgements. If a single 19 yo girl sees what the dangers are, maybe she won’t be that quick to meet a “cool guy” alone. Predators are a lot of times really charming and charismatic and the weak men searching for role models will form a wall around their heros. This is the world women must learn to live in, we need to learn this as soon as humanly possible. Naivety is not a justification for rape, but it certainly makes you much more likely to be a victim.

      Speaking as a woman who has been violently raped and who has always carried a large caliber firearm, i must say i disagree with you strongly. A serious education in self defense will instill confidence and capability whereas concealed carrying of a firearm is often a prison sentence waiting to happen. By the time one pulls out a gun from a purse or a pocket one can, with training, flatten a would be attacker. Women are quite frequently assaulted leaving places where alcohol is served, often by a person whom they have just met. One cannot carry a gun into a bar. I recently lost to Parkinson's a dear friend, Leah Lee, who was a tiny thing and with a 5th degree black belt was more lethal than i will ever be....and she was also a better pacifist.

Did the numbers actually show that a majority of women are assaulted when they go backpacking or climbing trips? There are monsters in every industry in every sport this happens and it’s horrible, but it doesn’t mean the sport in general has a problem. There are bad people everywhere. The whole point of this video is that studies show that the majority of women victimized by SA are afraid to speak up for a variety of reasons. Perhaps OP might consider that the women with whom 'he' climbs have for whatever reasons chosen not to share their experiences with him, or anyone, for that matter. Seems to me this is a great conversation to have next time the gang is hanging out at the fire pit after a day at the crags.

    Yosemite, isn’t that where that serial killer was years back…. reference to the comments you had to remove. There are so many “incels” online. They have no hustle so they blame it on women. I used to assist with woman who had stay away orders from their ex’s. Those orders are useless, and even when the women would go to the police, often the cops would side with the man.. “hey, she is still your wife”. as a response to a rape. I had a pretty good solution, Get a Dog. A vicious one. It worked for numerous women I assisted. However, it is important to wait until a verdict is rendered before we destroy the accused. Often the accused is judged by the horror of the crime. Innocent people do get their lives ruined by accusations that later are proven wrong. But of course I agree that the women in these cases need every aspect of our legal system to protect them and allow them to report the crime without judgement from police. We (white men) (cops in particular) still have that disgusting age old perception that women “ask for it” by wearing provocative clothing, no matter how far along you are (men) in making out… if she says no…. thats it…. period.

  • @dukecraig2402

    In all fairness Thom, the reason that many women get dismissed when they make claims against guy's like that is because you can't find a guy that either he or a friend he's close with hasn't had their life tore apart by some woman who lied through their teeth about him, now I'm not talking specifically about women who've lied about being sexually assaulted by men, I'm talking about any type of lies that've accused men of doing unacceptable things (he beat me all the time/he's manipulative and always made me feel trapped etc etc) usually to justify leaving a guy, when in fact the truth is they'd gone out and got themselves a boyfriend and now want out of the marriage but don't want it to look like what it is, so they accuse a guy of every horrible thing under the sun to justify, no hide, what they're actually doing, and there ain't no one can act like they don't know what I'm talking about because every single person reading this has either had it happen to them or are friends with a guy that it's happened to and that includes women who'll read this, all of you have known at least one guy in your life whose been victimized like that.
    People can get mad at me for pointing out the truth but there it is, yes, most definitely there's guy's out there who do these unspeakable things to women but let's be realistic here, the ratio of guy's who've had their lives completely destroyed by a woman who lied about them compared to the number of women who have really had something like that done to them is undoubtedly in the thousands to one, possibly even tens of thousands to one but I'm comfortable saying thousands to one, I mean face it the vast majority of us go through life having never known a guy who's a rapist, never having personally even known a guy brought up on charges for rape much less convicted and jailed for it but every one of us has seen plenty of our friends victimized by some lying woman with quite a lot of us having had it happen to us ourselves.
    Personally, if I was a woman who was assaulted and I kept getting dismissed by people when I was accusing my attacker I'd snap on every other woman I'd ever known that destroyed some guy's life because they lied and manipulated things to get their custody and alimony, I'd thank them for creating an environment where women get dismissed.
    People can get angry at me for saying this but I'm dealing with reality here not the way we'd like for things to be, I'm just pointing out the ugly truth in the room, the fact is if woman want 100% credibility when it comes to accusations against men then they need to start policing their own ranks, quit accepting women into their social circles who come around laughing about how they got over on some guy, laughing about how they drug hom through the courts and ruined him with a bunch of lies, and there's plenty of women who know a couple that see the woman lie through their teeth about some guy, and yea even feel bad for him, but will still accept that woman socially, they need to stop supporting other women who do things like that because it's the only thing that'll turn the phenomenon around to where the collective women of our society get the credibility back they once had, hey sorry but the reality is, and we all know this, is that for at least the past 35 years guy's have been getting their asses tore out in an unfair way by these domestic courts who automatically believe the woman, the reality is all they have to do is accuse and they're automatically believed by the domestic courts yet the guy is task with a burden of proof well beyond just his words, anyone who denies that is either delusional or they benefit from things the way they are and don't want to see them changed, the vast majority of the time some guy is getting his ass tore out by a domestic court it's being done by a woman who's lying, and they've literally destroyed the colllective credibility of women even in the eyes of a lot of women over the years doing it, the old story about crying wolf and the lesson behind it doesn't just apply to an individual it also applies to groups, or demographics or however you want to look at it.
    Now i am certainly not saying "They've brought it on themselves" when it comes to the problem women have about being believed when they make accusations about being attacked like that, but it's like anything else if you want to fix things in life you have to deal with reality, you can't just stick your head in the sand because a subject is hard, unpopular or uncomfortable to talk about, to fix problems you have to be realistic about what the causes of them are, try skating around what the real causes are and you'll never get the problem fixed, and the problem I'm addressing here is the one of women being dismissed when they make an accusation like that, if people just want to get mad at me for pointing out what i have well whatever, but they're certainly not helping out the women who need believed when they're a victim of an attacker like that, all continually skating around an issue or problem will do is create a hole in the ice.

      I agree with the above poster. I do not know any man who has been accused of things that he hasn’t done. What I do know is that many of my friends and relatives have suffered under tyrannical boyfriends and husbands, myself included. And the only lying woman that I know of is one who wormed her way into the life of my ex-husband and lied through her teeth about something she claimed I had said to her, which I most certainly did not. He believed her and not me. So she got her way and ended up destroying a family with two young children. So yes, certain women are inherently evil and will lie to get their way. But, few of us would expose ourselves to the embarrassment and legal trouble to accuse a man of any sort of physical or sa. So this responder who claims to know many men who have had their lives destroyed by lying women is either exaggerating or is truly hanging out with the wrong crowd.
