You really need to see the Garden Live Clockwork Angels tour , They have violin players , The Drummer wrote the song , he lost a daughter an a car car crash and his wife shortly after to cancer , This song is about caring for those around you
I saw Rush 17x first in 1978 last in 2015… As you said, they’ve never lost the passion for the music and fans. I met Neil at a breakfast diner in Rochester NY. I knew he was shy (Limelight) but being a drummer and somewhat a super fan, as I walked past his booth I said excuse me, “thanks for the music”, he replied, “thanks for the support…” Love your reaction, and review. R.I.P. Neil Peart long live the mighty Rush!
i'm with you on this one... the last song of their last album, and of all their catalogue, the lyrics with the most profound and beautifull message... and visually this performance is perfect
At Rush concerts, the absolute highlight of every show was Neil’s drum solo. Trust me, you will get tons of views and be blown away by Neil Peart drum solo - Rush live in Frankfurt. You’ve never seen anything like it guaranteed. Can a drum solo bring you to tears? Yes. R.I.P Professor.
What is so amazing about this performance is they were in their “late” 50’s, (Geddy 58) and this was the encore after a full 3 hr set!!! This band set the standard for how to live your life humbly, with class and they were always so great full for the fans and their love of the band…
Thanks so much Charis for presenting Rushmas. You did a great job reacting to my favourite band. You are pretty and have an endearing personality. Best wishes for the future. My favourite Rush songs that you did not react to are Jacobs Ladder and La Villa Strangiato. Take care
Thanks for bringing Rushmas, I enjoyed each and every one of your reactions on Rush! Like many others commenting, I encourage you to watch "Rush - Clockwork Angels Tour - The Garden", it's Rush's swan song and it's so moving. Thanks again from Ontario, Canada! 😊
Thoroughly enjoyed the month of videos. It was so interesting to see what someone like yourself, a singer in theatre, much younger than myself (I grew up with them) made of this wonderful band. Your final comments today were excellent and finished the month of beautifully. The thing with Rush is as the band themselves said, they attracted a lot of outsiders and geeks and they were lucky that those of us in those catagories were happy to allow them to explore and make music they wanted to make. It was a case of, doing what they believed in whether anyone else got it or not. I personally loved that honesty and integrity. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I wish you all the best for 2024.
I love that when the solo ends and they go back to the melody Alex and Geddy meet middle stage and give a bow to each other. The band has all sorts of fun things they do. Youll see Alex and Geddy have a little chat in the middle of a part and have a laugh without breaking a single note.
Look at those grandpas go! ;) Yeah, Ged had stopped sounding like Ged, but it kind of didn't matter because GD it, nobody else sounds like Rush. Thank you Charis! I enjoyed your analysis for this one in particular. It's easy to just hear "He doesn't sound the same" and not appreciate the technique he's using to get as close as possible.
A friend of mine had called them "Rock Grandpas' already back in '89, when I played him the 'A Show Of Hands' VHS and they were only in their mid-30's! 😅
The importance of this being played in Cleveland. Is Cleveland was a blue-collar working town and in 1974 Cleveland's WMMS-FM was the first radio station who played Rush on the radio, and that song was "Working Man", their career took off from there. I've attended thirty-two Rush concerts (tours) over the years.
Excellent reaction, but there are things you should know, for example, the U.S. ARMY band sings "time stand still" in memory of Neil "The Professor" Peart and the song "The Garden" live that still brings tears to my eyes when I hear it. but coming out of the sadness there is a song the RUSH that Geddy Lee says is the most difficult to sing and Neil said that it was a challenge to play it in every concert because of the technical difficulty it has and I must add that I don't know any band that dares do a cover and it's "Freewill" again a great reaction. thank you.
Cleevland Ohio was the first US radio market to play Rush's Working Man in 1974 - DJ Donna Halper at WMMS was their breakthrough when she started playing the album and fans at first thought it was a new Led Zep song and were being introduced to RUSH!! The band was with Rutsey on drums at that time - Donna and the band later became close - even sitting at their table at their Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction. Rush and Cleevland had a special connection and this Jam out at the end was speccial tribute to them. I saw them on the TIme Machine tour and the solo was great but not THAT great! - that was mind blowing!
I first "discovered" Rush in 1975, and the very first rock concert I attended was Rush on their "A Farewell to Kings" tour, in 77, when I was 15. Over the years, I saw Rush between 20 and 25 times, the final time during their R-40 final tour. When I was in high school, I was in a neighborhood band, and EVERY neighborhood band in Kansas City (and later in Westchester, New York, in the late 70s) played "Working Man!" Any time there was a "Battle of the Bands" show, EVERY band featured "Working Man" during their 3 or 4 song "set!"
A perfect end to your Rush journey! And might I add you are perhaps the most intuitive reactor I have ever seen. Amazing insight into the music, the band and the individuals. FYI, for their 40th Anniversary (wow! that's 4 decades!) they released a "comic panel" music video to their 1976 magnum opus, "2112." The video captures the true artistry of Rush's music. When you've got time, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
🥰 It's #NEAT watching you overcome with emotions, the same way we were, listening/watching/seeing them perform this piece. This was done at the end every night after 3 hrs on stage. 🥰🐰
This was a great version because a radio station in Cleveland playing this song was the introduction of Rush to the United States, so this to me is very …. Emotional!! The dj was looking for a bathroom song: a song that was king enough to play and run to the bathroom and get back before the song was over. She dropped the needle on this song and history was made.
Thanks for Rushmas, it has been awesome! My favorite reaction was probably "Xanadu," but I'm pretending you did the Exit Stage Left version. 😉 Just kidding, of course. Favorite was probably "YYZ." Or at least that's my favorite video you did, but I love all your reactions, so it's hard to rank them. As for future Rush reaction, it's a 100% must that you react to "2112," preferably the graphic novel-looking music video, which really helps to follow the story. It's not only their best masterpiece, IMO, but one of the best by anyone.
ua-cam.com/video/exa61MdUI_Q/v-deo.htmlsi=LJzxZCM17mb8oCcS This video is the beginning of their Snakes and Arrows tour. Kind of comedic video prior to them coming on stage. You can see the chicken rotisseries at about 2:55. You NEED to see The Garden from their Clockwork Angels tour.
I love your take on them, their career, and friendship. You nailed it. Theres so many factors that made them the amazing group they were, and their friendship was not the least of it. Honestly, sounds like a cliche, but there'll never be another band like them....for so many reasons
As the 1980s progressed, Rush's music became more & more melodic. In the 1990s, they tried to get back to more of a hard rock sound. A good example of this is 'Stick It Out' from their 1993 album, Counterparts.
Hi Charis! Loved the reaction and how you broke down the essence of these three guys perfectly. They always lovingly referred to Neil as the "new guy", even after decades had passed. Just so much light-heartedness to who they were as a group, and as people. I saw them twice, the last time was in 1997 in Salt Lake City on the "Test For Echo" tour. Amazing stuff. Anyway, here's a video with the rotisserie chicken's, enjoy and have a great New Year!! ua-cam.com/video/QuL_euRslTc/v-deo.htmlsi=tLr2vWWGOoRYKJdo
I really enjoyed all your reactions to Rush, my favorite Rock/Progressive group since 1976 which also happens to be the year they released my favorite song, 2112. Yes, I'm that old. Thanks so much and I look forward to more of your Rush reactions.
The nice thing about Rush is that they (mostly) continuously played together for crowds like that for forty years. It's so unusual. We may never see that again.
Working Man is from one of their earliest albums. That short little instrumental flourish they did right at the end is from a much later song, "Cygnus X-1, Book I: The Voyage".
Insanely awesome 🔥🎸🎶 2011 Donna Halper a female DJ played the first Rush song on the radio. This song. It jump started Rush's becoming popular. La Villa Stangiato Live 😊 .
Rotisserie Chickens on any song from Snakes and Arrows tour, I saw that on in St Louis, there's a guy in a chicken costume that bastes the chickens throughout the show. The chicken is then eaten after the show by the road crew. The chickens are a play on the "Henhouse" brand amps.
That last part where it sound like they're starting on a new song, is actually from another song called: Cygnus X1 book one - the voyage. Which is on of their best songs if you ask me
Rush' catalog is so deep, you could pull a kick ass song every week for 2024 and have material left over for 2025. One can only hope. Keep up the good work!
I do agree with previous posts, that you should check out the last song, on their last studio album - The Garden - performed live on the Clockwork Angels tour. That was the last tour I saw them on, and they were as amazing as always.
I worked at my friends Auto shop and we were talking about trying to get tickets to see Rush that night (On this tour). Another friend of ours worked there too and he was a drummer for a Death Metal band and had never heard of Neil Peart. At that moment we said "We are going to see them tonight and you're coming with" he said he was broke so we said we would pay for his ticket. When we got to the arena the show was sold out. About ready to leave a ticket window opened up right in front of us the ticket guy said a few extra seats were available. We ended up in the front row on the side of the stage so close we could almost touch Geddy. Our Drummer friend was blown away by Neil and was a rush fan from then on.
Highly highly highly recommend watching Beyond the Lighted Stage doc about Rush from 2010. You will be delighted by these three guys. Down to earth and have survived tragedy.
This is a new 'reggae' version of 'Working man' from the 1st Rush album in 1974... They did this version on the 2010/ '11 tour... It was called 'Time machine tour' because it was promoting the Rush career documentary movie 'Rush: Beyond the lighted stage'... in 2010 and Rush performed the 1981 album 'Moving pictures' in entirety (I was at the Minneapolis show in 2010!!!) Anyways... here's another link to the 2007 tour w/ the rotisserie chicken backline - 'Distant early warning' (live) from the 'Snakes & Arrows' tour: ua-cam.com/video/j1r4UZ_PGIc/v-deo.html
This was a fun journey to watch! There has never been a band like Rush and I am sure there never will be anything like them in the future. I would echo what a lot of people have already said: The Garden (live version) is the perfect end to an amazing 42 year career. It was the last song on their last album and it is just masterful. I would also suggest that you react to Bravado, Dreamline, The Pass, La Villa Strangiato, Armor and Sword, Between the Wheels and maybe something like Malignant Narcissism just for fun! They have so much more music that is worth checking out!
I love Rush, always have. In the line of an audience who has passion/feeling for a band, you should watch the last concert on the final tour that the Tragically Hip played in their home town of Kingston, On. This was a cultural phenomenon. The Hip are kinda loosely termed Canada's band because many of their songs were Canada centric. The lead singer Gord Downey passed away from brain cancer (similar to Neil Peart) not too long after and although he wasn't in peak form, he and the band displayed the style that made them who they were. The final performance was shown live, across platforms, for free across Canada. The country shut down almost completely to watch.
Geddy’s voice started to go around 2010. While the playing during those last couple of tours is as fantastic as it ever was, I really have a hard time watching videos of those shows due to the weakness in his voice. If you want to see what I mean, re-watch the Tom Sawyer video you did earlier, then search up Tom Sawyer Time Machine Tour. For the former, he will just hit those high notes with full power. For the Time Machine tour Geddy was kind of trying to “swoop up” to those high notes and he lacked any power in behind them if he ever hit them. While a part of me wanted RUSH to go on forever (RIP Professor-so dearly missed) another part is sort of glad they didn’t.
I gotta say I agree. I saw them way too times over too long a period of time to criticize him for it. It was difficult to see/hear him struggle over those last few tours but I also admired him for not hiding behind auto tune, as many other singers with similar issues did. They left all on the stage, working their asses off (you could almost call them, “Working Men”, eh?) for decades.
🤗 Saw Time Machine at Madison Square Garden. 🤯 It was honestly one of the best Rush Shows I'd seen. 😒 And I practically saw them all starting with them 😱 opening for KISS in JHS! 😁🥰🐰
I've thoroughly enjoyed Rushmas! Way to go! You've picked a great finale. I really enjoyed the breadth of choices you made to react to. Working Man was the song that broke them in America initially, and it was a Cleveland radio station that played it first, so them playing this song with this much fire in that city is a powerful thing. If you ever go back to Rush, 2112 is a *must*. It's their Magnum opus. Another band worth a look would be Deep Purple.
Wonderful reaction, Charis. I agree with many of the comments below that you really need to react to "The Garden" - a very emotional ride and a fitting song to end on. Of course I would like you to do a Rush Year, yet I honor your desire to move on. I highly recommend a deep dive into Kansas - an incredibly talented progressive band (still making music and touring). I'm sure you know their most popular songs, but they have many hidden gems.
I had the sad experience of living in Hawaii. I was there 3 1/2 years and that was 3 years 5 months too long. Needless to say, NOT an 808 fan. The only thing that kept me sane was a nearby nightclub that had live music every Friday and Saturday nights. There was a band that played this song and nailed it. I requested it every time I went there. So, when they came in and saw me, they KNEW they were going to be "Workin' Men". RIP Neil.😇 I didn't go to this concert, but I have been to four of their shows. I appreciate what they're doing here but I'm not really high on the reggae kickoff.
Good job Charis, just subscribed! Only saw them 3 times ( Montreal, Glens Falls NY and Hartford,CT) Worth EVERY penny needless to say..Do "best intro ever" next from them please
Fine reaction! Ok, I got some Rush favorite songs that I think you haven't reacted to yet, and, believe me (you've already seen what these 3 guys were able to do!), you'll regret if you don't do it! And these songs are: "Freewill"; "Closer to the heart"; "Distant early warning"; "Red Sector A"; "A passage to Bangkok"; "Jacob's ladder". Happy New Rush Year! 😉😅👍
A deep dive into Epica would be nice. A Dutch symphonic metal band who started in 2002 and still going strong. Awesome band with an amazing lead singer, Simone Simons.
What always gets me about this particular performance is 3 guys in their late 50s, doing an encore at the end of 2-3 hour performance, with THAT kind of energy. It is also amusing to go back and watch them doing this song live in 1974 (pre-Neil Peart) ua-cam.com/video/SZYr_J9H54I/v-deo.htmlsi=AHPv8vu_dENk2WAQ.
Throwing this out there for a deep dive on another great band. Check out Porcupine Tree. So many great songs but you can’t go wrong with Arriving Somewhere but Not Here, and Anesthetize.
I think you would appreciate a deep dive into the band Yes. Not only are they "theatre kid" friendly, they also have an extremely talented lead singer who you can professionally analyze.
The funk/reggae style to the start of the song was them messing about with tune from the first album. They would describe it as a song they knew so well playing about with it was easy! A different class altogether. As so many other reaction videos are showing, they were the best, most successful band no one knew about.
Geddy also said they liked to play it because they all knew it so well that they could just let Alex go crazy for a while in the middle and just do whatever with him. All three soloing at the same time. Ridiculous. I don't know of any other group that knows their songs so well amd each ither so well that they can do this.
Do a deep dive into Hendrix . Also Clapton when he was in : The Yardbieds - CREAM - Derek And The Domino's- John Mayal And The Blues Breakers - Blind Faith - Clapton & Peter Tosh . And of course all his solo work.
I really enjoyed all of your Rush reactions. Although I never had met Neil, he seemed like a guy with a lot of class. The reason I say this is because on the original recording, their original drummer, John Rutsey, played on it. He was a very good solid drummer who played this song pretty much straightforward. In this concert, Neil could have showed off his playing skills and outplayed John but didn't and kept it pretty much like the original. To me, that showed he had respect for John and what he did for the song. To me, that was a sign of class. Just my opinion. RIP Neil.
I'll need to check your playlist as I was late to the party, to see what other required viewings were missed. "The Garden" is one tha must be done if nothing more than it was the final son, on the final album. (At least for this incarnation of the band. If they decide to move forward with a "Post-Neil" Rush project. Though I would lean towards a new project name, just because of how weird it would feel to not have Neil on a Rush record.) Good times though!
I am really enjoying your reactions. You really get their music and who they are. To see the rotisserie chickens please check out out Secret Touch from the Snakes and Arrows tour. It is also a great song. To hear what I think Geddy's highest note that he hits please check out Cygnus book I. He is right up in the stratosphere! Cheers
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your introduction to Rush. You got a good sample throughout the decades, but there’s one song that’s core part of the Rush DNA you should still do - 2112. The titular track from their 4th album, it came at a time when the studio was pressuring them for shorter, radio-friendly songs. They decided, instead, to write the album they wanted, and figured it would be their last. Despite studio dismay, the album exceeded expectations to the point the studio never told Rush what to do again. The song earned them their artistic independence, without which there would not have been 40 years of Rush. This 20-minute-long sci-fi rock opera is told in multiple parts. It includes a true overture and a story as tragic as anything penned by Shakespeare. I suggest the 40th anniversary comic video put out in 2016. Read all the text in the test boxes at the start of each movement- these were liner notes included with the lyrics in the original album. Cheers! ua-cam.com/video/w5jwxrTqoEA/v-deo.htmlsi=So4ZsZq0PZIW0F4A
I don't know if anybody has requested that yet, but it would be cool if you did just one more Rush reaction with the song "The Garden". This is their last song from their last album in 2012, and it is meant to be an emotional goodbye for all the fans with such reflexive lyrics about life. And in the end, it become like the last words from Neil to the world after he passed away in 2020. It would be the perfect ending for your rushmas.
Amazing performance by an amazing band, who to me will never be bettered. There is a band that runs them close,& that is the swedish band opeth, like rush their music is broken down into different styles, from death metal to full on prog. Love your reactions by the way.
Rush maybe as a band have “kept their humanity” better than any other. They stayed true to themselves, to their friendship, to their responsibility as professionals, and to the vast team of people who worked to support them. It’s a beautiful synergy of creativity and love.
I'm surprised you haven't gotten to Neil Peart's iconic drum solo - Live in Frankfurt - yet. Definitely put that on your playlist to check out! You'll see "The Professor" at the pinnacle of his craft.
I don't have a link, but search for live video of the Snakes and Arrows tour. 2008 I believe. That's when Geddy had the chicken roasters behind him. Hope that helps! 👍 BTW. There is no wrong version of a Rush song. 💯
Awesome reaction, check-out ,Limelight live from the R40 tour...I think it may have your, roasters....heard they cooked them ,then fed , the crew....thanks again ...Todd from Ohio...
Great job kid!! Don't know how you decided to do a deep dive into RUSH but great choice & good job with RUSHMAS! I would like to suggest your next deep dive be LINKIN PARK! They were huge until Chester decided to take his own life 😢! They have plenty of hits to choose from and live performances. \/
Think of it, this performance was the second encore after a two and a half hour show when Geddy and Alex were 58 and Neil was 59. You should check out La Villa Strangiato, the first encore from the same show, it's just as fun and is, along with working man, in a video on UA-cam called the best outro ever. You should also check out this short 2 minute vid of them being announced to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Charis to see how beloved they were to both fans and other musicians. 😊 ua-cam.com/video/IK6dS15hq24/v-deo.htmlsi=fUmhoE53w87dphYs
Red Sector A would be a great next step in your journey. It is the height of their synth era and a song inspired by Neil talking to Geddy's mom about her time in the concentration camps.
I have been a Rush fan for many years and have enjoyed your Rushmas series. I think you would really like The Warning. They are a three piece all female band from Mexico. They are acually sisters, and they rock hard. Any song from their Teatro Metropolitan show in August 2022 is a good one, although I would suggest starting with Disciple.
Never seen this live version before - not sure I like it as Working Man has a classic rock riff but they were having fun at the end of the gif I guess :). Added in some Bytor and the Snow Dog to the mix too it seems.
If you find the time please do check out their bio, Beyond the Lighted Stage. It will show you just how closely you nailed your reaction to this band. Awesome job, 😊
🎄 Happy 🍾 Holidays Charis! 🤗 Thanks for Rushmas! It's been a blast! 🙋🏿♀️ May I suggest Steely Dan starting with their AJA (pronounced Asia) Album & Title Song 🥰🐰
You really need to see the Garden Live Clockwork Angels tour , They have violin players , The Drummer wrote the song , he lost a daughter an a car car crash and his wife shortly after to cancer , This song is about caring for those around you
YES FISH! Thanks for telling her this. Fabulous song.
Neil writes the lyrics please stop saying he wrote the song ...that implies he wrote the whole thing which is just untrue.
This song was Rush’s breakout song. It was first played on a Cleveland, Ohio radio station by DJ Donna Halper in 1974.🎸🤘
As a former FM radio DJ, my love and respect to THEE Donna Harper! She launched Rush over the airwaves--now THAT'S The Spirit of Radio
😅
This quite frankly, is one of the greatest live performances ever.
Got to disagree with you. I love Rush, but on this tour, Geddy's voice is flat you shot.
@@fretless05 I was actually talking about this particular song in this particular concert. The instrumental is incredible.

As for future Rush reaction, it's a 100% must that you react to "2112," preferably the graphic novel-looking music video, which really helps to follow the story. It's not only their best masterpiece, IMO, but one of the best by anyone.
I was there! 5th Rush show in Cleveland since 1978. Peak Rush !!!
It was a Merry Rushmas indeed! Loved seeing you experience these songs and performances has been a kick. 😁

This video is the beginning of their Snakes and Arrows tour.
Saw this tour at Newcastle Arena UK. Unbelievable. Love your reactions my friend xx
I appreciate your journey and honesty. Play more RUSH!
3 of the most incredible people the world has ever seen .. RIP Neil ..
I knew I saw the rotisserie chicken thing somewhere. Now I realise it was at the show I was at in Rotterdam in 2007. Thanks for jogging my memory 👍🏻👍🏻
It was a great December beautiful.... Steely Dan and 70s Chicago are two great bands with huge catalogs. Luv ya ❤
Three guys in their 50s ending a three hour concert
Working Man is from one of their earliest albums. That short little instrumental flourish they did right at the end is from a much later song, "Cygnus X-1, Book I: The Voyage".
Insanely awesome 🔥🎸🎶 2011 Donna Halper a female DJ played the first Rush song on the radio. This song. It jump started Rush's becoming popular. La Villa Stangiato Live 😊
.
This is the stuff of legend. Rush are the best!
Available Light and Anagram from Presto album 👍
That last part where it sound like they're starting on a new song, is actually from another song called: Cygnus X1 book one - the voyage.
Which is on of their best songs if you ask me
Rush' catalog is so deep, you could pull a kick ass song every week for 2024 and have material left over for 2025. One can only hope. Keep up the good work!
I ❤the channel. Love the eye shadow.
It was called 'Time machine tour' because it was promoting the Rush career documentary movie 'Rush: Beyond the lighted stage'... in 2010 and Rush performed the 1981 album 'Moving pictures' in entirety (I was at the Minneapolis show in 2010!!!)
Anyways... here's another link to the 2007 tour w/ the rotisserie chicken backline - 'Distant early warning' (live) from the 'Snakes & Arrows' tour:

This was a fun journey to watch! There has never been a band like Rush and I am sure there never will be anything like them in the future. I would echo what a lot of people have already said: The Garden (live version) is the perfect end to an amazing 42 year career. It was the last song on their last album and it is just masterful. I would also suggest that you react to Bravado, Dreamline, The Pass, La Villa Strangiato, Armor and Sword, Between the Wheels and maybe something like Malignant Narcissism just for fun! They have so much more music that is worth checking out!
I love your fresh look into one of the greatest power trios ever. Looking forward to more
I love Rush, always have.
I'm so happy to have been at this show. Amazing
Stay on RUSH you won't regret it.
RIP Neil.😇
I didn't go to this concert, but I have been to four of their shows.
The Garden live.
Here’s a taster from their 2021 live stream… ua-cam.com/video/c8XdrOhEZl0/v-deo.htmlsi=1LP56zf9_LzLXM3E
A hidden Rush gem. Available light, last song from the presto album.😊
The youtube video "RUSH Basting Chickens Charlotte NC" is a good one - that was on their Snakes and Arrows Tour
Crazy to think that's almost 12 years ago.
I think you would appreciate a deep dive into the band Yes. Not only are they "theatre kid" friendly, they also have an extremely talented lead singer who you can professionally analyze.
Rotisserie Chicken clip. Snakes & Arrow s tour: ua-cam.com/video/uLwaOyEcUO4/v-deo.html
Saw this tour in Tulsa... it was a Fountain of Youth for them and us.
RIP Neil.
I saw them 6 times, & now I realize that wasn't near enough!!!
Cheers
Yes. WOW is the proper reaction. Well done. 👍
Cheers! ua-cam.com/video/w5jwxrTqoEA/v-deo.htmlsi=So4ZsZq0PZIW0F4A
Yes react to Garden Live on CA tour. I am the dad of two theater kids and a 40 year Rush fan. Keep it up!!
Masters at work.
I don't have a link, but search for live video of the Snakes and Arrows tour. 2008 I believe. That's when Geddy had the chicken roasters behind him. Hope that helps! 👍
BTW.
Amazing song,
Rushmas should extend into the new year!
You could try The Garden Live!
