I bought your presets a few days ago and started to apply them and change them a bit on some of my photos and honestly, they're the presets I like the most. Your style is so simple and clean. I'm a big fan.
Two little things that I found out to be helpful is to name folders in yy/mm/dd as like that you will always find them in chronological order. Secondly I have saved exporting profiles so that once I am ready I can export for web (low res with watermark) a set for proofing and an other set for full size printing. In the export I have them set to take the folder name l, sequential and to place them in the original folder ( names web, prof & full size) . Their keeps my hard drive organised sequentially and knowing that the job is compleat especially in your case where you are using a new catalog on every shoot.
@@MitchLally the problem is that adobe hasn’t made export presets simple to record. You have to initially go in to set them up and save them and then you can use them with one press, or even after right clicking to export directly with the desired preset.
The video is great and I watched it fully BUT the thumbnail is just misleading… you said this video is about how to get that soft glow look and eventually showed a preset.. would love to see a full video about how to get that look if possible
Just to clarify, your two preset packs up for sale on your site are completely different or updated from the "MITCH LALLY - AUTHENTIC FILM" pack you had out a few years ago right? I purchased that one and loved it and am interested in purchasing one of your new ones.
Thank you Mitch! I found it helpful to edit my photos with Narrative Select, which saves me a lot of time. Can you share how can I customize folder name for every client in the SD card/camera? Thank you.
I’m not exactly sure how to do that and it depends on the camera. Usually in the menu there is an ability to create new folders but unfortunately I’m not sure if you can rename it in the camera. You can definitely change the filename in most cameras though.
Fantastic video Mitch, the best and clearest guide on workflow I've come across. Quite surprised you only have a few TBs of data per year, considering all shoots and videos. So all your original RAWs are only saved to those portable hard disks? Not a RAID system or dropbox too?
Hi Mitch. I didn't find burleigh portrait match in the last preset update. But there is a burleigh alt. Is it just another name or is there no burleigh portrait match preset in your pack so far? Thank you.
Question, I try using Narrative Select but I noticed that as I zoom in on my photos they don't look as sharp as they do on Bridge or Lightroom. Is this also the same for you? Is it just a software issue on NS when rendering the images or could it be my PC?
Select is using the embedded preview that your camera creates - it’s not full resolution - but it loads instantly. Depending on your settings Lightroom and Bridge can use these too but then switch to the full res when you zoom in (why it lags). But select is just for culling, it’s not for editing so as long as you can see if the shot is in focus then the embedded preview is enough.
Great video! Actually I was expecting a little more depth on the way you edit your photos from start to finish and how you achieve the film look, instead of applying a preset.
I just don’t understand what you have to gain by leaving comments like this. Like - there’s hundreds of film stocks, intentionally over/under exposing, dozens of ways you can develop incl push/pull, unlimited ways to scan and color balance - who is to say that what I interpret is objectively wrong? Of course you’re never going to get it to look like film - granted it’s digital - but you can give it a good whack. I did it - and thousands of people bought my presets so far so I guess that’s something..
@@MitchLally I’m don’t stand to gain anything, I’m merely expressing my point of view, which by the sounds of it isn’t positive enough for you? I’ve shot 100’s of rolls of film and to achieve that “film aesthetic” you have to shoot film...end off! You said it yourself in your comment it’s never going to look the same because it’s digital....so why bother trying? Film & digital are two different formats and should be treated that way! To many people throw on presets or play with sliders in editing software to try and mimic film instead of going and learning the craft of shooting on the film format!
I've read this exchange. You could have approached this is such a different way Ed; used it as a way to promote your work and your expertise. But no. You did the exact opposite.🤷🤷
Hi Mitch, after you cull your photos with Narrative Select, how do you quickly delete bad photos from all your drives? I'm having trouble doing it efficiently, especially after making the initial backup copies of my SD card. I'm a beginner so I'm eating storage like crazy and needing to figure out better file management and space saving tips! Thanks so much
If you only want to keep your selects one way to do it could be to do another seperate export of your catalogue but this time instead of selecting jpg, select ‘original’. This will make a folder of all the selects as raw. Then all you need to do is just delete the original folder of raw files and keep the files you exported with the ‘original’ setting!
Hello and thanks for the video! Let me tell you about my photo storage system. I bought a NAS server from Synology with 4 SATA slots. There are newer versions that support M.2 SSD + SATA HDD/SSD. I installed 2 x 6 TB HDDs in it and configured them in RAID 1 (mirroring). If one of the hard drives fails, the server will inform me about it. It will be enough for me to buy a new HDD and replace it. Then the server will do everything itself, duplicate the photos on a new drive. Also, it is advisable to buy an APC Smart UPS for the server, so that during power outages, UPS sends a command to properly shut down the server and after the electricity is restored, UPS turns on the server on its own. The advantage is that I have access to it from anywhere in the world. Once, we were vacationing in Greece on a yacht. The customer wrote to me that he urgently needs photos from a shoot a year ago. He asked if I could send them to him? I logged into the server through a mobile application, created access to that shooting and sent a link to the customer. Everyone is happy. I recommend!
Nice video. Thanks. I like the Narrative app tip. I too find the "magic" jpg instagram format isn't so magic. I've put numerous sizes up and don't really notice much of a difference.
Thanks for showing off your workflow. I must admit this editing style is certainly not for everyone. It's a little on the flat side for my taste (sucks the color out of the picture) but that's my humble opinion.

Excited for new preset update. I got an email update last year. Thanks Mitch!
Have watched this so many times! Thankyou for making such an easy to follow, useful video!
Mitch. I love your style man
Thanks David!
Just to note, narrative select isn't free. There's a pricing system in place with their service
Found your channel a few weeks ago, have had this video on watch later since it came out... so packed with quality and information, amazing!!!
The small jpg export was a great tip Mitch!🙏
Thanks for the shout-out Mitch!
You guys are big part of my workflow!!
Great video. Might try that culling app and definitely going to look into exporting the smaller jpgs.
thanks for the workflow. previously, I dont have proper workflow on editing RAW. this video really helps

Excellent video my friend! I have a shoot coming up and Narrative Select is going to save me so much time.
Really appreciate this!
great video bro!
Appreciate it!
What computer set up do you use?!
I have a Macbook Pro 14" M1 Pro w 16gb of ram.

No raid anymore. I had raid when I had clients but my shoots aren’t super important anymore - mainly for youtube.
super helpful - thanks!
you deserve way more followers
Thank you so much for sharing all of those knowledges 🙏🏾
Also, I really admire your work!
Do you sharpen your images in processing or is sharpening during export enough for you?
I always feel that my images need some sharpening.
Helpful video. Thanks, Mitch. Would love to see how you achieved the look of your Photographing Tasmania film in your next video.
Wow great tips! An awesome picture to start too definitely helps💪
what’s that monitor you’re using ?
Nice video. Really love your work
A tip would be to grab a quicker SSD and not use the SANDISK as they are prown to fail.
Hi Mitch. I didn't find burleigh portrait match in the last preset update. But there is a burleigh alt. Is it just another name or is there no burleigh portrait match preset in your pack so far? Thank you.
Burleigh is the portra match preset now. Burleigh alt is the old burleigh - hope that makes sense :)
@@MitchLally yes thanks, it makes perfect sense :)

With the photos you don't choose, would you delete them or keep em?
Always keep!
Do you client's selects? Or do you pick the best pictures?
I stopped letting them pick it caused way too much time in between. I’d rather give someone a few extra pics at that point 😂

That’s alright! We all have to be slightly different otherwise we would all make the same photos!
good video but your camera is blocking the histogram throughout the video, even when you use it to edit
All Narrative needs is to support Windows, kinda bummed to find out that they aren't supporting it yet.
They’re releasing Windows soon! I heard it on the grapevine :)
