Master Roshi's motivation is one of the best in the series. You root for Goku and Krillin, but you know that Master Roshi needs to instill this lesson in them.
To me in this tournament Roshi is almost more the protagonist than Goku 😅
Because he has to fight against the literal monster that is Goku and has to overcome him to instill this lesson. And we almost exclusively hear his inner thoughts and not Gokus^^
Yes, He really should win just because that is if Goku wins. He is afraid that Goku will lose motivation in martial arts
That reenactment of what happened in that brief moment of fighting really does wonders putting into perspective what we see in DBZ onwards, because from the perspective of a normal person, every single fight goes like this.
|Spoilers| and to even greater affect... in this it was just blurs to them, meaning they werent near the speed of light yet and even by the end of OG goku reaches at least just beyond that fight in the last tourny
People who grew up watching Z often forget or don't know that Toriyama got his start writing comedy.
The fact that this is how fast they are at this power level really puts into perspective just how fast they are in DBZ. It's no wonder 5 minutes takes 10 episodes.

Goku has ALWAYS been a great cornerman. He always knows how to motivate anyone and he points out threats to them that they either miss or forget about.
it's cuz he's watching fights from the perspective "if I was there fighting..." only getting better view of the situation from the sidelines xd
The reenactment of the fight was peak writing. The show had so much wits compare to the new stuff.

Things like Launch teaching Goku how to count passed 10 (1:31) are why I was so sad never to see her again. There are so many instances of Blue Launch acting motherly toward him & Krillin.
Jackie Chun is an awesome character.
The nimbus cloud was part of the natural environment, so it was part of the arena. Just became he has control of a cloud doesn't make it less of a cloud. Hitting the cloud is like Hitting the wall he destroyed when his tail grew back. It wasn't the ground so it was legal

This fight is literally the reason we get 5 minutes fights taking 30 episodes in Z, because here Toriyama said (with his storytelling, not actually said with words) "Here are your choices - we can go realistic time and it all happens so fast you need crazy explanation like this, oooooor...." and we collectively picked the "or" xd

The tournament arcs just get better and better every time; every match. Strap in, long road ahead and so worth it!
Every time I come back to this I ask myself why Roshi didn’t participate in some of the major conflicts.
He did in Red Ribbon, he did against Piccolo and after that he actually had been retired.
He was very active until his students surpassed him and I mean all of them goku krillin yamcha tien and chiatzu then he retired then Z happen and all of them but krillin had any screen time

Krilin VS Bacterian is the most epic match in Dragonball.
The Anouncer beeing such a based Charakter, its so sad how underused he is now in DBZ.
I really like the scene where he is happy for them in the World Tournament Saga. :)

Notice how the Kamehameha is actually known in the series. So what the hell happened between now and Z where nobody seems to know what energy blasts and Ki are?

Little piece of advice, watch the original lyrics of Roshi's song. Let's just say it was really heavily censored in the dub. That's what made Goku joining in even more funny.

He's crazy good for a normal non-ki using human, so yeah.
@@specialnewb9821 yeah I mean, he's still the champion. The ki users didn't show up, but that means he still beat everyone else. So he's at least Bruce Lee level, probably stronger because he's also a strongman as well as a martial artist, and this world has super powered monsters and stuff that show up to these tournaments.

Goku is 14 at this point. the Japanese sub is more correct. because Japanese made this show
The age correction was in the Japanese version as well, in fact as a direct response to that earlier statement. He thought he was 14, but he miscounted.
The Japanese dub says that Goku thought he was 14 until he was taught how to count, when he realised he's actually 12.
So, Krillin was always better fighter than Yamcha
