    You guys are fantastic. You’ve shown me some spots in NZ that even I didn’t know about. And I’ve been everywhere! Love your music choices too. I try to match the mood of my USA road trips to music, but you guys just got it so right. We’d love to have you back!

    Glad you love it :) The thing about New Zealand is that there's something worth stopping for about every minute lol. I'm like you. I love the tiny perfect places on the side of the road with not even a good place to stop.

    Great to see the Harvard trainer/slide is still there! My Mum’s family lived in Masterton, we lived in Palmerston North and regularly past through Ekatahuna on our way to attend Christenings, weddings and funerals etc, if we didn’t pull up at the slide my parents knew good behaviour from the three in the back seat could no be guaranteed at said pending function. The reputation of their parenting skills,was, in our tiny hands. I’m 62 now and live in Sydney, so thanks for that, a lot of water has past through the gorge and down the Manawatu river since then. By the way, the airframe is real, that’s a Harvard trainer and was used to train pilots for WWII. Cheers

    The tall flowers are known as Toi Toi they are native to NZ ( although some silly bugger introduced 2 similar species from Sth America. )

    A good friend of mine played 90% of the character Gimli from LOTR. His name is Brett Beaty, he didn't get any screen credit but was given the axe by Peter Jackson. He is 4 ft 11, The actual actor John rece Davies is 6 ft 2, and as u know you cant have a 6 ft 2 dwarf! Brett had to wear gimlis face and learn all the lines plus did all the stunts in all 3 movies etc etc. He was even asked to get a tattoo which says "nine" in elvin script which the main 9 actors got. Was pretty cool. So whenever u watch the movie and see Gimli close up and the voice its John rece Davies and whenever u see him as the dwarf it's Brett :)

    On your drive into Milford Sound did you see the "disappearing mountains?" As you drive towards them they get smaller and disappear. A very cool optical illusion caused by the fact the road is long straight with tall trees on both sides and you start driving slightly up hill.

    Mt Doom was mostly Mt Ngauruhoe (pronounced NAR-u-a -HO-ee ) but not exclusively because Mt Ngauruhoe is sacred to the native Maori people. Incidentally, Mt Ngauruhoe is an active volcano and usually has dark smoke coming from the peak almost all the time. Mt Ruapehu is nearby (pronounced ROO-a-Pay-hoo ) is also an active volcano and has a lake in the volcano crater. Even though the lake is at a height well above the snow line, the water is warm enough to swim in because it's heated by the thermal activity below the water, lower in the crater.

    Hi love how well your videos are showing off New Zealand scenery. At your favourite spot the trees which are completely bare are bright yellow in full bloom. They are poplar and found all over New Zealand. Another import but one we like. The area around Mt Doom is called the Volcanic Plateau and is actually a desert. The road is actually 3 times higher than Queenstown. Our place surrounded by mountains in Central Otago was lower than our place in the hills of Dunedin City on the coast.

    Looks like you had a great time exploring the absolute paradise us kiwis all call home. Just to give you a hand with pronunciation (phonetically) Ruapehu = Roo-ah-peh-hoo and Ngauruhoe = Ngow-roo-hoe-eh (and you need to roll the r’s). Glad you’re having a great time! 😃

    Those pokey things are Gorse bushes. Introduced by the damn British to use as natural fences. It gets cold near Mt Doom because it's quite high elevation even on the flat.

    • @HappyHoppe
      @HappyHoppe  4 роки тому +1

      Oh good to know - yeah they would work as a natural fence 😆 ouch!

    How did you get from the Pinnacles to Mt Doom? Did you contuinue on up SH2 to Napier?

      Happy Hoppe They actually filmed Frodo and Sam's trek to Mordor in the black volcanic rocks beside of the Bruce Road up Mt Ruapehu (where you were). They just used the neighbouring cone shaped Mt Ngarahoe for the long shots. So you were actually in the right place!
