    Thank you for your video. This is my go to channel in learning the HP50G and HP Prime and their application in Electrical Engineering. I just got my HP Prime today and I am very happy with my new toy.

    What a great video, Professor. I am a 65 year old ex=psychologist that cut my teeth on an HP-65 in 1976. Of course, I've moved up the line and actually did my 2nd MS degree experimental data analysis on an HP-41C. I even used the HP-41C for the experiments and data capture. Anyway, your excellent video convinced me to get a Prime, mainly to monkey around with. Just when I thought the glory days of HP calculators was over, wham! There's prime. I still have many HP calcs in the collection (HP-16c, HP-65, 41C, 41CX, HP-34s, HP-42s, HP-33E, HP-45, HP-35, HP-80) and use them all occasionally. So I guess you would call me (in your words) a dye in the wool RPN kind of guy. Thank you again. You must be an excellent teacher.

      Thank you for your kind post, Mr. Leyenberger. Yes, the HP-PRIME does not cease to amaze me. One interesting feature of this generation of hand-held-computers-calculators is that HP releases periodically new version of the software that creates the illusion of a cybernetic mathematician in a box, the CAS. And each version just gets better and better. Right now, I am running the 20171010, that is 10 Oct 2017. It seems to be the latest. My first HP was the venerable 35, then I used my late first wife's 45, and a good friends' 65, then purchased the 25C, moved up to the 67 (the most beautiful of them all, just my taste), and from there to the 41C. Years later, my daughter was required to use a calculator for high school and I got her (and me) a 48gx (the last of the classic look calculators), and then, for the sake of my students here at UBC, I bought the HP-49g, and its faster and better-looking clone, the HP-50. But the HP-PRIME, as you well said, has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for HP in the calculator's world. Thanks again for posting, sincerely.

    Thank you; I'm an Italian chemical engineer and I'm a fan of RPN as I cut my teeth on my sliding rule and then on an HP 45, HP25 (not C) and on an HP 65.
    Particularly programming the HP 25 I did in two hours the work other did in 2 days, and this was a powerful support for my career.
    I don't do such calculation anymore, but I always try to have an HP calculator

    • @rolinychupetin
      @rolinychupetin  5 років тому +7

      You and I are probably from the same generation. I also had a sliding rule as my first calculation aide, a Fabber-Castell 83N, a marvel of technology ... and never ran out of batteries :) Then HP-35, 45, 65, 25c, 67, 41c, 48g+, 50 and now the Prime. I wish I had had the Prime when I was an undergrad, last century. It's nice to have contemporary virtually around, in this cybernetic space. Welcome!

    Great video, I have just bought an HP Prime for my nephiew, he wants to study enginnering, so in my opinion this is a very good Xmas gift, I had an HP 48GX when I was studying engineering in the 90s, a great machine, expensive but worth every penny I paid for it, but, as always, you need to start by the basics and learn how to use it to get the full potencial of it, thanks for the video and merry Xmas (2023 :) )

      Merry Xmas 2023, and great gift for your nephew. I hope he appreciates it. I'd suggest that he download and install the emulator on their his laptop so he can practice on the big screen and with a full keyboard.

    Always enjoy your videos Professor - thank you! Started my HP journey as an EE student a long time ago with the 28s. Upgraded to the 48g and then the 49g. Bought a Prime a few years ago. Now my oldest is in college studying to be an EE. I gave him my 49g, but I'm thinking about getting him a Prime for Christmas. My original 28s no longer works, but I found a 28c on eBay today for $40. The only difference between the 28c and the 28s is the amount of memory. I love my Prime, but I can't wait to play with the 28c - where my HP journey started :)

      Thank you, Mr. Frei, for sharing your journey with us all. I also congratulate you in having a child following in your steps. Beware that some profs at his school who don't really know the Prime's "examination mode'" features, may balk at the use of the Prime during exams. I have had to explain at length how easy it is to restrict the power of the Prime during exams as the examiner sees it fit, and easy to enforce too. Some even insist on having only four basic operations and trig calculators in exams (which the Prime can be forced to work as, in one of the most restrictive exam-modes.)

    • @robfrei6375
      @robfrei6375 5 років тому

      Thanks again Professor. This is good advice, and we will do our due diligence in advance to hopefully avoid any issues. There is an investment, as you know well, for a student to become at one with the calculator so as to be able to move fluidly through homework and exams. I hope he can use his HP. We'll make sure we know how to use the exam modes.

    Gracias Profesor, encantado de haberme topado con este video. Soy un Ingeniero químico con ya más de 20 años en ejercicio. Estaba en una de comprar unas calculadoras con RPN más que todo por el factor nostalgia y hasta ahora he comprado una HP 35s , una Swiss micros DM42 y finalmente adquirí una 50g que no he desempacado aún. En mi época de estudiante la competencia era entre las HP-48s/sx, HP-48g/gx y Casio Fx-850/880
    Pero ya después de ver su video, estoy pensando en comprar la PRIME.

    • @rolinychupetin
      @rolinychupetin  6 років тому +3

      Si, la Prime representa un salto cuántico en cuanto a amigabilidad y flexibilidad. Un cosa novedosa de la Prime, es que el software de la máquina lo actualiza HP cada tantos meses, y uno puede actualizarlo fácilmente, con una PC o Mac. En las versiones nuevas, HP corrige "bugs", agrega funcionalidad (no estoy hablando de los "apps", sino de lo que es el corazón de la máquina, el sistema operativo propiamente dicho). Eso la converte en una máquina que es cada vez mejor, sin tener que comprar nuevos modelos. Yo tuve la HP'35, usé la HP'45 de mi difunta primera esposa, luego tuve la HP'25, HP-67, HP-41C, pasé por una Sharp programable en BASIC, y volví con la HP-48x, HP-49, HP-50, y ahora la Prime. Por primera vez no echo de moenos el RPN.

    thanks for the prof. posting these great videos.
    however, i found it much easier to do the following setups,
    Home:
    degrees, fixed 4, textbook, a+b*i with the check mark beside it ticked(opposite to what he said).
    CAS:
    degrees, standard 4, decimal, Minimum , and uncheck complex and use i (again opposite to his settings)
    when i followed his settings it was impossible to get the answers he is showing on other videos....!!!
    i hope this will help.

      I used the HP 41C too, back in school. It was great. I even paid for an emulator of the 41C for my iPhone. But once I got the Prime I was hooked. I also have the Prime emulator on the iPhone (I even traded my regular sized iPhone for the larger format iPhone, so I could type on the screen).

      I had a HP 41C back in the day which I used for "programming" (mostly matrix operations). It was all I could afford as a student. But alas I did not hold on to it. I recently bought a HP 35s (still in production). It has many of the HP 41 features, and I especially like the positive old-time feel of the keys and the clear writing on them. I don't program on these things anymore as there are much better languages now. I also use Maple for a CAS system. But I use the HP 35s as my go-to basic calculator. It is beautiful.

    Does the prime indicate when it is fully charged. Im seeing the electric bolt icon over the battery. Does it go away ever or just stay there indefinitely?

    • @rolinychupetin
      @rolinychupetin  Рік тому +1

      Good plan. The HP Prime can be a strong contender. It's open source XCAS makes a world of a difference. I also like having the same calculator at hand (a physical calculator), on my iPhone (an emulator), on my laptop (a free-of-charge emulator). That makes for a smooth uniform experience for me.

      I use the Connectivity Kit to do that. I go HELP/Update calculator (with your calculator connected). I am just describing what I do, not recommending that you do this. If you do it, it will be at your own risk and responsibility. My lawyer made me write the last paragraph.

    Should I get hp 50g or the hp prime?

    • @rolinychupetin
      @rolinychupetin  6 років тому +5

      Both machines are excellent, but the HP-50g takes a bit more work to learn to use. If you get the HP-50g, make sure (type VERSION and check) that you update its firmware to version 2.15 (version 2.08 is faulty). If you get the HP-PRIME, also make sure that you upgrade the firmware to a 2017 version (version 2016 has trouble simplifying rational algebraic expressions).

    I’m a biomedical engineer with a minor in medical instrumentation. I have the hp 50g and it has worked me for electrical circuits and other classes. Do you recommend changing to a prime?
    Thanks in advance

    • @rolinychupetin
      @rolinychupetin  6 років тому +5

      If the HP-50g is working for you, I'd stay with it. I switched over to the HP-Prime because HP does not make the 50g anymore and I insist on my students here at UBC to have one powerful calculator as a companion on their journey to become electrical engineers. I am glad that I got to know the Prime, bu the 50g is a fine machine.

    I'm also an old guy who decided to go back to school and study chemistry to learn the science of making wine. One of the prerequisites is calculus and my HP 11c just doesn't have enough capability (so I am an RPN guy). I purchased an HP 50 g. Your videos have helped me get started (thank-you thank-you thank-you). The manual is not very helpful when using RPN. I have a few questions: 1. the home menu on the bottom of the screen in the #3 position has "stack" instead of "store." 2. My HP 11c has "store" and "rcl" buttons, is there a similar functionality on the HP 50g? If so where do I find them. 3. I am not on facebook or any of those social media platforms, what is a good resource for asking HP 50g related questions? When is comes to these calculators, HP is absolutely worthless, its all about laptops and printers...Thank-you again...

      Mr. Dommen, welcome back to school. Winemaking is one of the fundamental skills of the human race, I think. Like growing food off the earth, a skill honed by humanity for thousands of years. Congratulations. About the HP-50g and its descendant the HP Prime (which you can use for free as an emulator for your laptop, or for a few dollars, for your Android or iPhone), you can ask questions at the www.hpmuseum.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/hpmuseum/archv021.cgi?read=251233 (the museum of HP Calculators, a site dedicated to HP Calculators and their fans).
