@GL Fer the fact that your first reaction to seeing a black man play louis is disgust really says a lot about your character. jacob is a phenomenal actor and louis being black added a lot more depth to the story and his character

If you wrote a block buster selling that had a massive fan base would you sell the rights regardless and just pocket the cash? The argument has nothing to do with race or creed. They even increased Claudias age from 5 in the novel, 11 in the movie to 16 in the series.

I get why they made Claudia older. If they’d casted a child the actress would have grown too much over the seasons to keep playing a child.
a couple days ago i remembered that i had planned to start this series and just episode 1 alone blew me away completely. finished the whole series now and i can say that this is one of the best shows i've seen in years. the level of detail regarding the characters as well as the different design elements, the chemistry between actors THE MUSIC... absolutely impeccable.
Everything about the series so far is friggin PERFECT. Could not have been better cast - perfectly reimagined with all of the appropriate dialogue, storylines. And the actors. Gooodamnnnn. Louis (Jacob A.) Lestat (Sam R.) Claudia, the Interviewer...all just seriously impeccable performances. Bravo. More please.

No, the book fans aren't "big mad", just the whiny "fans" who can't accept that certain changes were necessary to make the books into a TV series and who're ignoring that in the end it's still the same story with the same characters.

Really don't know what people have to be mad about. I read the books 40 years ago, saw the movie 20 years later, and am now loving this series. Good stories thrive on change and adaptation

I want to see the trio dynamic because I really like Claudia in the books and in the movies, she is a woman trapped in a woman's child, and the relationship with Lestat and his obsession with Louis
I am so excited about this series, It looks amazing. I wish more people know about its existence. I am terrified of it being amazing and getting canceled anyway because people don't know about it.
I hope that WHEN people Do know about it the writers don't start fan fictioning their work and stay true to their vision especially for the first 3 books. I will be LIVID, LIVID i say if we don't get a just Queen of the Damned storyline

This interview alone made me twice as excited for the series! I know people are mad at the casting, but I believe this cast will DEFINITELY do justice to the show as well as Anne's legacy with the books.

My first thought was disappointment at the time period change, but I almost immediately got over that. The trailer looks like it captures the spirit. I really hope they go more direct with The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned though….
they should have just adapted a different book instead of pretending that louis is a 1920s black pimp. no hate towards the actor. it's not his fault that the showrunner decided to butcher the book.

Reeeeeally looking forward to the series after the trailer & the interview here. They obviously show respect for the original novels, even if - of course - they are revamping it (pun intended) and that is everything.
It's not the actors' fault, but AMC has shown Anne Rice no respect and has rewritten the entire book beyond recognition. They also fired Anne Rice's son Christopher Rice as screenwriter when they took over the TV series from Hulu.
It then becomes impossible for the actors to show Anne Rice respect as they play other characters who are completely changed from those in the book.
Anne Rice wanted the TV series to be faithful to her books and that the characters and story should follow the book without changes.

It must have been terrible for Anne Rice to see how AMC destroyed her work in this TV series before she died.

For everyone in the comments complaining about it not being faithful to the novels, I have to ask you to read the novels. Actually read it, at least the first 4 of them. You'll see IWTV is Louis version of the story, and you'll see it is already pretty gay in IWTV, but gets gayer after this one. They were so obviously im love with each other it's painful to read, the way their love to each other is at the same time intense and cruel. When I first read it, I was a child. I was 11 years old and all of this passed unnoticed. I was there for the blood, the historical scenarios, the adventures of those centuries old monsters. Still, I fell in love with Louis' depth and his compassion.
Today I'm 20 yo and reading the novels again. Now I see so many things I didn't notice back then. First of all, how every time Louis seems exasperated at Lestat's personality, is right after or right before a moment he realizes just how charming and beautiful and enchanting Lestat is. Or how unsettling it is to be so near him, "handsome as though he was" (yep, Louis' transformation). The only one who did not notice he was in love was Louis himself. And I think (based on the first novel), most of his issues with Lestat came from the fact he does not know how to deal with what he feels for him. I loved how the series could, using different words, make us get basically the same idea, the same feeling.
The way he wants to die with Lestat, to be in the bottom of that swamp with him, when he has to dispose of the other's body. The only thing to make him turn around and go home before sunrise was Claudia's voice and the thought that she would be alone, she had no one to look after her. How can a man want to die with the other, to never leave the other, to start a family with him, and not be his lover? To be hypnotized by just how beautiful, how radiant he looks in the moonlight. To be dazzled by the sound of his laughter. To not know what makes him more nervous: entering a coffin or being so close to such a handsome man. It's really romantic, but also filled with hatred (the other side of love, they say. Locked together in hatred) and distress.
What's with the several-minute opening with nothing happening? Cut that and open with the actual video.

They're not 'Gilded Age' (which refers to the period 1865-1900) but rather, 20th century vampires. The series begins around 1910. And 'Gilded' is correct, it means 'golden'; 'Guilded' means having to do with guilds, associations of craftsmen or merchants

I wonder how juicy Season 2 will be without Lestat for a majority of it😏 It will also be interesting to see how the producers/writers incorporate acknowledging that Louis & Claudia are traveling in Europe during WWI…..will Claudia met a Soldier?😘
All I know is that I better see some hot ass sex scenes, whether it's Louis with Armand or Louis going behind Armand's back to have sex with Lestat, but it's going to be terrifying yet exciting, and one thing it's going to eat Lestat up when he finds out that Louis has a new man in his life, especially that he's a vampire and also way stronger than Lestat, that's going to be lit both of them fighting over Louis.
I'm so sad if Lestat won't hardly be in S2 😞

They’re only making their relationship more explicit because as the saying goes, “sex sells.”
And there was nothing wrong with how their relationship was portrayed in the movie. It was perfect.

I'm assexual, i don't care about sex, i actually enjoy their relationship the way it was in the book, we don't need anything too explicit to show how much the characters love each other, i was talking about the more romantic side and maybe kisses, that's all.

Sometimes, shows/movies that don’t follow the books, are hits. Look at The Shining and Hannibal! Both are excellent, but they weren’t close to the source material.
I’m not seeing that with this show. Maybe I’ll think differently when October rolls around.

it's actually rare when the non-canon adaptation is better than the source. usually, it's a bad move if the source is already great to begin with. if the source happens to be bad, then the adaptation has the opportunity to make the correct changes to improve the story. interview with the vampire is already great as it is. there's really no need to change the intricate lore and individual backstories of each character. the trailer already looks horrid.

This looks like a fun TV show, but not an adaptation of IWTV. They'll join David and Daniel in one character and no Armand, sad. But I'll see b4 my final judgment
That's what bothers me, that a chapter as beautiful as "The Devils minion" in the book The queen of the damned, does not exist anymore. Because obviously Armand is not going to conquer a 63-year-old Daniel Molloy. Pfffffffffff all wrong.

this is already so much more in line with the books than any other adaptation
1) lestat finally french
2) explicitly portraying louis and lestat's relationship
3) references to nicki and gabrielle
4) hearing them talk it sounds like they get the vibe of the book

no it's far from faithful to the books.
1) claudia is NOT adult-sized by any stretch of the imagination.
2) oh, and louis is a white slave owner. that really shouldn't be hard to miss.
3) the gay aspect of louis and lestat's relationship was not that explicit in the books either. it was much more about them being a gay couple with an adopted daughter rather than an explicitly sexual thing. if you've read even just the first book, this is mostly what their companionship was about. and lestat seemed more devoted to louis while louis always felt like he was the reluctant "sub" in their relationship.
4) the main vibe of the book is the philosophy of EVIL, it was NOT centered around being gay. remember how lestat kept insisting that evil is just a point of view? because "god kills indiscriminately"? this was the main rift between lestat and louis. sure, they were a gay couple, but the real "vibe" of the book is them confronting their own evil nature.

5) if you've actually read the books, you would know that the vampires in anne rice's mythology DO NOT attain gratification from sexual acts. they just drink blood. if you insist that the vampires were sexual with each other, you clearly either DID NOT READ the books or you completely misunderstood the basic lore of it. this was further explained when pandora tried to have a sexual relationship with marius and she realized that sex doesn't really work for vampires anymore. it was all just the blood-drinking.

I wasn't/still not a big fan of the race/age/timeline swap but..... It's up to the actors to pull me in and enjoy the story to unfold. I would've preferred it like a classic Anne Rice, but I will not lie and act like I'm not curious to see how this unfolds. I hope it isn't too modernized in the setting, what drew alot of us in about the story was the classic looking feel of it all.
i will treat this show as not really canon and more along the lines of fanfic that may or may not totally flop. i'm setting the bar really low and do not expect at all to be blown away the way the books delved into the amorality of lestat for example.

The respect is in the writing? They cast an adult woman in the role of a little girl whose entire storyline is about being an old woman trapped in the body of a little girl and what that's doing to her. Forget that brothels are yet another expression of sexism and giving men ownership of women, which is very conveniently not a problem for a show that's sensitive to slavery but not misogyny, but the whole point with Lois was that for all his "oh woe is me, I don't wanna drink blood", this is not a nice person! And it's that lack of empathy in both of them, Louis and Lestat, that caused them to turn Claudia and not care what that's going to do to her in a few years. Technically, they could still have this message if Louis is abusive towards the prostitutes, but I don't see Americans doing this with a black man. Then there's the artistic and thematic value of having a slave owner who becomes a slave to this thirst for blood that he doesn't want to have. *sigh* I'll still give the show a chance, but the more I hear about it, the more I think I'm not going to like it. I'm also worried that they're going to do the stupid thing and stretch 1 book, Interview with The Vampire, into 5-6 seasons.
I am agree with you. They are making many weird changes, also thats the reason of why Christopher Rice doesnt want to talk abpout the series in social media. Many fans ( i am include) has asked him about the series ( because he was the executive producer) and he only said he doesnt want to talk about them. Also, he doesnt share any media content abput the series, as he did before.
the people excited to see more gay content regardless of how badly butchered the books is are not real fans of the canon. they just want to see woke versions of older cooler stuff that they didn't grow up reading or watching.

don't get me wrong. the entire vampire chronicles is teeming with gay undertones and overtones. but anne rice wrote it all so savagely beautiful. if they want to showcase that aspect of the books, that's completely fine. but to render the two main characters as far removed as possible from their original story is just an insult to the source material itself.

As far as I know Bryan Fuller was the first showrunner attached to the show, he is gay (and one of my favorite showrunners), and I don't know if he chose to leave or if he was fired but I'm pretty sure it was over creative differences. And we haven't even seen or heard enough of this new version of Lestat to have a sense of what they're doing with him, which actually also bothers me, he's one of the most iconic horror characters out there, you'd think they'd take advantage of that and lead with him.

oh i don't mean that it's bad if it's gay content. only that it seems like the show is going to be quite woke and not really how the gay subtext is in the books. like, if the show loses sight of the actual narrative which is the question of Evil as being the newfound nature of louis and instead have this shift in focus on the gay relationship as being the central plot, then you can basically write off this show as just trying to pander to gen-z and radical progressives.
because i genuinely think that it's genius how anne rice wrote about the vampire bonds and how the narrative doesn't rely on sex but instead cleverly tied both the need to survive and the burden of killing in the only thing that the vampires have left which is the bloodlust.

If they want to make the gay subtext less subtle that doesn't bother me as long as the show doesn't become a romantic drama that forgets it's a horror show, which I think is what you're saying, but I also think this a premature worry right now. The best way I can describe the problem is this: the reason why Hannibal (the TV show) and movies like The Shining are special and exceptional even though they made a lot of changes is because Bryan Fuller and Stanley Kubrick are auteurist creators with strong visions. Whereas the person in charge of the TV show version of Interview with The Vampire seems to just take out artistic and thematic value without adding anything in return. Also, after watching the trailer, I can safely say that putting pigtails on a woman does not make her a believable child.
Thank you AMC for ruining what I've been waiting for for years to see if you wanted to make a vampire movie that had nothing to do with her book she might as well done that stop saying it's interview with the vampire.

also, i don't think she "threw a fit". i read in other interviews that she eventually warmed up to tom cruise's energetic lestat. an adult-sized claudia is really bizarre though. isn't it enough to race-bend the characters? they had to get an adult actress to play a little child as well?
@@maggyfrog she did eventually come around, but i think she was paid by the studio to stfu. When Cruise was cast she was very vocal in the media that she was outraged. I think that qualifies as "throwing a fit".
Anyway, my point is that if she didn't like a simple casting choice I can only imagine how she'd feel about the changes and warping they did to her novel here. It was clear from her early reaction to a series being made that she was excited for a faithful adaptation.

i did read somewhere that anne rice was excited with the idea that the vampire chronicles might get something like a game of thrones treatment. like, because that show existed, she thought it would be possible for a faithful adaptation of her sprawling vampire lore. she should have retained a significant artistic ownership of the show the way jk rowling made sure she got rights to say yes or no throughout the making of the movies. it looks like the network offered anne rice a bad deal that she probably miscalculated. that or maybe she just took the offer because it could be a now or never chance for her.

It's so weird to see so many people glorifying the fact that they changed the entire storyline and made Louis a.. PIMP. Like owning women and children bodies is absolutely acceptable and cool¡! but his original storyline is UNACCEPTABLE, although that was the sad truth of history and the atrocities white colonizers/settlers committed all over America. They should have just made him redeem himself in some way if they wanted to modernize history, or accept the controversy of having a black character playing a slave owner and explain it someway. Owning vulnerable women and exploiting them for s3xual purposes isn't better, that's just nitpicking which social issues scandalize you the most and bending reality accordingly.
Nobody is saying it's better, is still horrible, but that's the character, they made him black, therefore you can't make him be an slave owner, so they make him own people in a different way, Louis is not supposed to be an cinnamon roll

But then they would have to compromise the woke approach of the tv show, and their woke public with 0 history knowledge reaction (no offense!!). I would have much rather they kept his storyline, and made him repent of being a slave owner by relating himself to his own culture and whatnot.
I haven’t seen 1 slave owner repent for being slave owner based on years of history. Seeing how we literally came out of BLM and Don’t Hate Asians, the years of violence and murdering POC still exist. So, your hypothetical situation doesn’t exist in white people.

If you're going to change everything about the original characters and story, and just take their names, then just come up with your own original vampire story 🙃 That's literally what they did with TQOTD movie, even in Anne's words, take the characters' name and do a bunch of nonesense. I was very hopeful at first about this adaptation.... But the adult Claudia and the black Louis are ruining it for me. Sigh, I hope they make me change my mind in october but not getting my hopes up.

You already have a movie with white Louis and child Claudia. Why can't we have black Louis in the show? The people who made this show envisioned Louis as a black man and so casted him that way. If you don't like it, make your own adaptation and cast all the white people and girl children you want.

Script aside, Stuart Townsend was a better Lestat than Tom Cruise. And Aaliyah was amazing. And the soundtrack was the absolute best. For what it messed up, there was still stuff to like about it.

The main problem with the casting is Claudia. All the other problems people complains of are the grotesque changes the showrunner did and keeps selling with such a condescending breath. I'm still watching this train wreck, but it is a shame that we could've had a chance of a more complete and loyal representation of the books and all we got is another re-hashed product because "AMC knows better than long time fans"

@@vipulasharma302 Jacob's acting is AMAZING, but after that it feels like a fanfic rather than a truthful adaptation. As a gay man myself this is not the queer representation I was expecting, it feels like they focused on their distorted relationship rather than in building a solid story around that relationship and well they throw most of the lore outside the window.
But I am what people say "book accurate" so you better watch it for yourself if you're curious about it. Personally it was disappointing to me and feel kind of scammed since the premise was that they'd be much more book alike than the 90's movie.

But be it fortunate or unfortunate, in this instance, I had not read this book before (had heard of it, will now read it). So for me this felt like a good show. Acting performances were pretty good and I am also biased because of 'Jacob Anderson'. He is so hot and so talented. Loved him in GOT and love his music as well. I liked the other cast as well. Sam did pretty well too, so did Bailey. So yeah!
But neither have I read the book nor am I in the lgbt community. Therefore, as a causal viewer, this was way better than most of the filth netflix and all other platforms are putting out recently and diverse too.

Very disappointed in this adaptation, & even though I am still planning on watching it. It pisses me off that even after Anne's death Hollywood still butchers her stories to make it their own.
This is a cheap knock off of what was supposed to be a great tribute to her characters & the trauma of the life they go through. & what pisses me off the most is Claudia is supposed to be a child. You definitely won't be able to pull off the story whatsoever because of this reason no matter how much you try.
