They use the infra-red beam to encode data that a microcontroller decodes. An infra-red receiver, an Arduino, and a bit of software would allow each button to do something different. That's how you get multiple channels. Also, wiring mains voltage like this is extremely dangerous. Not recommended unless your will is up to date.
How can you match the remote control to the receiver ckt, unles it is a remote control and receiver kit you've assembled it is ended match transmitter receiver kit.
You can use the leftover wire from soldered resistors, diodes, capacitors. Every time you solder a component you can collect the remaining ends after cutting them.

U don't need ic 4017 ..the IR sensor connect direct to transistor will give same function. Why waste extra ic ?

a flash light would turn it on. it's not a frequency or a PWM signal it's just ANY signal

Don't do this at home. Mains supply can kill you if you are not careful. No safety at all.
Main power supply has nothing to do with this circuit as 5v power supply or battery can also be used to run this circuit which is not a danger.
