Vinegar already has the feature to smooth the hair and the dead ends. It also neutralizes the ph value, cause vinegar has a really low ph value (about 4). Humans can use that method too, it's called sour rinse ☺

Great video!! Been doing this to our Reiners for years!! Swear by it! I also use the vinegar to do a vinegar wash/rinse when the horses get super dirty in the winter, it’s breaks up all the dead skin cells, oils, dirt ect... that get trapped under their blankets. Makes them shine!!! And kills and bacteria and gets rid of skin flakes!

I had to give up riding two years ago and still miss it like crazy. But watching you and Jesse's videos helps a lot and brings some back of that joy I had back then. Thank you!
Baking soda and vinegar mixed together can be used to clean many household items. Baking soda on its own can whiten teeth (human). Vinegar can make sensitive flesh sting, so avoid getting it on a horse's exposed skin. Bear looked gorgeous. Matt's jersey / jacket was gorgeous, too!
Ok so you just saved me a fortune and this is so fun to watch the reaction and is it just me or is the fact that bear is just kinda like what the heck is happening is all over his face makes it ten times funnier
This is a great hack! I've used vinegar in the summer to help keep flies off of my horses...but never thought about using the baking soda in the shampoo to really get them clean! Once the weather warms here...I will be doing this for sure!
Worked beautifully Matt!! There are many uses for white vinegar and baking soda which might surprise you. Research on the internet. Vinegar is safe as is baking soda. Vinegar is also a disinfectant. I use it with hot water and clean everything in my kitchen including the refrigerator. Check these two out online and keep them on hand. Cost saving buying the large sizes. Bear looks beautiful and if you worry it might dry his hair just add conditioner as a last step!! 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎
So cute when little Bear comes running to you on the pasture! This is what pony love looks like! I felt a bit bad for him when he was exiled to the walker with his wet soda-tail in winter but luckily he wasn't there for long. He's such a sweetheart and was such a good boy when you splashed the smelly vinegar on him. The results are good too!
That was great! Plus your enthusiasm was awesome. I like how you "brought us with you" to see it in the bucket. You're petty funny, and so excited. I loved it! Thank you, Matt.
Vinegar is a natural stripper, it is great for use on human hair, it strips your hair clean and the vinegar smell goes away when it dries. It‘a also a natural conditioner. When you use it put water in the sink add the vinegar and with a cup just pour it over your hair a few times, then rinse with plain water.
Wow! Amazing results. Great video Matt. Yes you should do a series on trying inexpensive hacks that will save time and money. That's a great idea. Thanks for the tips. Btw, Bear is so adorable! 😍😁
Hey Matt I'm a country groomer from Queensland, I do dogs and cats mostly, and I use vinegar and water (50/50) in a spray bottle to help dry animal hair faster. I've never noticed that it leaves a vinegar "smell", but I also use animal colognes so that prolly helps.
Matt, you problem had backing soda in the house because it is also used in the frige to keep the smalls out from food. It is used for a lot of things. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day.
This is a great hack! As Matt mentions, baking soda is alkaline and vinegar an acid. they neutralize each other. Also, When I had dogs I would dump a bunch of baking soda in the wash water when I washed the throw rugs they'd lay on to totally eliminate any odors. Now, to dry your horses manes and tails faster, get a cheap wet/dry shop vac but one that has a drain you can open on the bottom. If you're someplace where you can let water run on the floor, just leave it open. Attach as many of the solid tubes that come with it as you need to the hose so that the combined length is longer than the tail. I'm pretty sure you can buy extra. Then take a section at a time and feed the bottom of the tail into the tube.Obviously adapt for the mane. A father on You Tube puts an elastic hair tie on the end of the tube and rolls it off onto his daughter's hair to make a tight pony tail. So obviously it doesn't hurt. Then finish with a blow dryer if needed. You can also use the attachment with the rubber along the opening to dry the horse (or pony) itself. Always make sure you have the right filter on or buy 2 vacs and keep one for each. Then you can use the dry vac with the upholstery attachment which has the short, stiff bristles to vacuum a dry horse. Will work better than the one Matt used from his house vac, which is for dusting. LOL.
I’m glad Matt made this video. I have also read many comments on other things to to try on my palomino. So if one cleaner doesn’t work there are more option out there to consider.
Hi! I wouldn't put backing soda and vinegar on my horse skin, because these two ingredients makes a really strong chemical reaction. On the tail were it doesn't touch the skin it is an amazing idea though ! You can put some conditioner before and after the shampoo to avoid the hairs going dry !
Baking soda can be used for many things...like, keep abox opened up in the refrigerate and freezer to keep odors away...dump some banking powder down your drains and pour in lemon juice...it will foam up, and leave the stinky drains smelling fresh and sweet...also you can shake banking soda all over your carpets to eliminate odors then after it sets in for a half hour, vacuum it up....most of your dry carpet cleaners have baking soda in them. ...great tip on the colour white......your little guy is so happy to see you....
I would try using a smaller bucket on the main to dunk it maybe in three or four sections. I think an empty vitamin suppliment container would work as a make shift small bucket. It might take a bit longer because you will have to do the main in sections but I bet if you can get dunked your main would come out just as nice as the tail. Two people might also help to keep the horse stationery when you are holding the main sections in the small bucket. It worked great thanks for sharing this trick. I use to live in Ireland and i had two grey horses that we use to hunt with and their tails could get very muddy on a wet hunting day. This trick would have come in very handy.
The difference is amazing! That is so easy. Glad you posted it. Bears mane and tail look so white and clean. I am wondering if you finish by washing it all with water at the end if that will take away the scent? I will be trying this out on my horses. Bear is so lucky you take such great care of him all the time. He is the sweetest pony ever! I love how he comes running to you. He loves you so much. :)
Vinegar is also good for getting residual soap out of hair, especially if you're in a hard (lots of minerals) water area. You need to condition hair after. Baking soda is a mild abrasive. Those 2 have been used for over 200 years as cleaning agents. Just use a conditioner after. You're right to not over use it too. Beer is so cute!
Matt that is absolutely BRILLIANT!!! I can't believe how much its lifted Bears maine and tail, he looks like his very handsome little self lol. Fantastic hack to share!! Much love to you guys and all the babies (horses) love Gem.xxxxxx
Thanks for bringing Bear back on! Yes, baking soda & vinegar work amazing for all sort of cleaning issues. However, I never would have thought of putting on a horses tail. That worked amazing! The funny part,” I don’t know what white vinegar looks like “😂! Can’t wait for you to go stallion hunting again😃.
You should try the shampooing with a conditioner that contains bluing. It really makes the hair whiter and softens the main and tail. I love how Bear comes running to you. You can see your horses love you!
Yes, baking soda and vinegar works wonders and a simple water rinse should get rid of that vinegar smell. It also works well when added to a laundry cycle. Bear is such a cutie 💕🐎 🌟
I used to use ‘Magic silver white’ hair dye - it’s blue but you just put about 3 drops to a bucket of water after you wash your horse then dunk the tail fully in the bucket then straight out (don’t leave it in any longer because it will be blue) but it works really well! Love from Oz 🇦🇺🦘🐨
As someone who previously owned a grey with a white tail, I LIVED by this hack 😂 You can get a really silver shine in the hair by doing this and then following up with your normal ‘white horse’ shampoo for a couple days after. Liberal use of conditioner is needed cause the vinegar and baking soda do dry out the hair, but other than that it works awesome!
I had to stop what I was doing to watch this. We’ve used vinegar for our show animals to help with the rinse. It won’t strip the hair so it is safe to use. I love the baking soda trick. We also use borax soap to cut the dirt or Dawn if really dirty. Dawn will strip the oil so not always a good option. Another whiting trick is to soak in old fashion blueing to get white animals white again. But if you use too much they turn blue. From watching this video I think the baking soda is a better option. Bear is so adorable. I miss seeing him and Chase.
There is a laundry soap called Woolite here in America that is a very gentle soap meant for delicate washable. I have used it as a complete body shampoo on my grey mare for years and she is always sparkling white after her baths! ❤️❤️❤️
Aww I love how much love you have for your horse’s. I really like your reaction to the results when you had Bear tail in the bucket. You should show more. Can’t wait for your next video of buying your next horse. Q: Do you like Arabian horses and would you get one? There face are a bit slimmer. Not sure about the height but there very shiny.
Vinegar chips are the best!!!!!!! I have a dark horse so I don’t know the struggle of having a yellow/brown/green horse but it’s so cool that it works!
We used Blueing. It's like a white dye. It's blue in color but it kept a white horse white and after waiting for a few, we would wash the horses again. You may be able to find it in the laundry supplies at the store. It may be called something eles in your area tho. I am in the USA. Loving you guys always.
Yes! "schoonmaakazijn" works magic, no shampoo or baking soda needed. Matt uses the vinegar for consumption ( wich works fine as well) but the cleaning vinegar is even less expensive and you can get it in 5 lt cannisters. Love the stab and spray hack!!
Baking soda and white vinegar are the best cleaners! Can I suggest you mix the two together to make a paste, then apply and let it sit for about 15 minutes. It's the combination of the two together that whitens.
I had a couple of fleabitten grey horses I showed, and I always mixed Ketchup in with the shampoo to do their tails - it would really do a great job removing the stain, even if they went all winter without being washed. I'm sure its probably the vinegar in the ketchup doing the work too. But it works fast and I used to do it before almost every show!
If you ever forget clothes in the washer and they get the *soured* smell rewash them as if they are just dirty but add vinegar to the wash and the smell will be gone. Also works well for equine laundry to help rinse out any residual detergents.
Just be sure to condition well after baking soda. It’s drying. A little baking soda in shampoo also works as a clarifier for horses and people especially if you use lots of leave in products. Apple cider vinegar by itself even diluted with some water is a great rinse even after conditioning. Really brings out shine and a bonus in summer some bugs don’t like the smell!
I’m going to give this a try for the springs competitions. Normally I give the tail a wash with “vanish” a couple times of the year - but I’ll definitely try this
This has always helped me with my Palomino mare, she also has white stockings, then my dapple stallion. My boy had a really bad stain on one strand and I used those fizzing denture cleaners (lower tail, nowhere near my boy) and it was great. I rocommend just tying a plastic bag tied over the tail while waiting, then condition!
If you want to keep it cost efficient, you can buy jugs of white vinegar and tubs of baking soda in much larger sizes at bulk stores (not sure what the Dutch equivalent of Sam's Club and Costco would be) or online. I use vinegar and baking soda as my daily cleaner all over the house since it's safe (I have cats, a bird, and a dog) and only use things like drain cleaner or bleach when absolutely necessary. The problem with using vinegar+baking soda frequently is that it absolutely WILL damage the hair over time and it can severely dry out/irritate skin (yours as well as Bear's, so I definitely recommend wearing those rubber dishwashing gloves whenever you wash the horses with it). I recommend coconut oil, just because that's what I keep at home. I have a huge jar of organic coconut oil here at home. Yes, I can cook with it, but I don't. I use it on myself and my animals as an all-purpose moisturizer, plus it really helps with the dog's and the cats' coats (I put some in their food, but not so much that they refuse to eat). Wash Bear's mane/tail with the baking soda and vinegar. Once his mane and tail are completely dry, rub some coconut oil in your hands and work it into the hair and then immediately comb the excess out and then take him on a walk or something so he doesn't go rolling and turn into a yucky mess (I do this with my husky, who is sorta Bear-sized). It's totally fine if some coconut oil gets on his neck/quarters, it will moisturize his skin and help his coat.
Women use vinegar as a hair rinse. Also you might try laundry blueing for white laundry. You would just by a small bottle, dilute with water and dip tail in bucket and work it in. Not sure how you’d get it done with the mane. It’s used to soak white laundry in. Does a beautiful job on that. Don’t imagine it would be any different for coarse mane/tail hair fibers.
It definitely worked, but I would shampoo and rinse again afterwards to get off the baking soda and vinegar. Btw... you can use that combination for many household cleaning jobs, including unclogging sinks and drains!
Use conditioner after you rinse with the vinegar, helps with dryness and the scent
Try adding organic coconut oil as a conditioner. Makes the hair really soft and shiny and it's all natural!
Vinegar already has the feature to smooth the hair and the dead ends. It also neutralizes the ph value, cause vinegar has a really low ph value (about 4). Humans can use that method too, it's called sour rinse ☺
For the smell I personally add a bit of Lemongrass oil to my water-vinegar mixture. (I use Applecider for it)

Add vinegar to the whitening shampoo!!! Let it sit for bout 5 mins on the white then rinse. WORKS AMAZING!!!! Plus helps with flies in summer!
Great idea Matt thank you for using Bear as a model he looks amazing afterwards.
There is a laundry soap called Woolite here in America that is a very gentle soap meant for delicate washable. I have used it as a complete body shampoo on my grey mare for years and she is always sparkling white after her baths! ❤️❤️❤️
That was amazing. So proud of you for trying all natural products and saved money too. Thank you for sharing.
Aww I love how much love you have for your horse’s. I really like your reaction to the results when you had Bear tail in the bucket. You should show more.
Can’t wait for your next video of buying your next horse.
Q: Do you like Arabian horses and would you get one?
There face are a bit slimmer. Not sure about the height but there very shiny.
bear’s like “dad what the heck????”
I love how you’re always dressed in like every day clothes when you’re bathing your horses. I would never have nice things... lol 😂
I love that your horses are always outside!
Hey Matt, Vinegar and baking soda combo is good for cleaning your sink drains too! Many many uses for each and both. Love ya!
Matt, all your videos are great. I love watching them and they are all very informative. I love your horses. Thanks
If you ever forget clothes in the washer and they get the *soured* smell rewash them as if they are just dirty but add vinegar to the wash and the smell will be gone. Also works well for equine laundry to help rinse out any residual detergents.
why is Matt such a mood when he is in the store 😂.....
Normally I give the tail a wash with “vanish” a couple times of the year - but I’ll definitely try this
Wow amazing results. Baking soda and vinegar can be used for so many things. Thank you Matt and little Bear🙌🙌🥰😘♥️💚
I also saw some one that used Tomato Juice to also help make the tail & mane white. Your baking soda and vinegar worked beautifully! Nice Job!
Vinegar is actually good for your hair. People use it too on theirs. Doesn't strip the hair, actually helps the ph balance.
Bear is going to smell like a pickle! 💞💖💞
Amazing before and after shots! And it's so easy to do!
I always use quick silver for my white horse! I had trouble making anything else work. But I'm going to have to try the baking soda thing lol
You could treat the mane and tail with baby oil after the wash. It helps keep dirt away and makes everything super soft!
It definitely worked, but I would shampoo and rinse again afterwards to get off the baking soda and vinegar. Btw... you can use that combination for many household cleaning jobs, including unclogging sinks and drains!
Whaaat, thank you Matt! I am gonna try that on my icelandic horse 😄👌🏻 it's actually been years since i saw his true colour of his mane and tail! 😍
That was a very cozy vlogs and the result was crazy :D Bear is so cute
