Imagine a psychic thri-kreen with minor illusion who uses it to give himself speech bubbles of what he wants to say. Or you could be boring and just get Telepathy.
You are criminally underrated! Your encounters are creative and interesting, and your editing is very professional. You deserve far more support than what you have.
I love Thri-Kreen! In my setting I have an entire society of "city states" where old infertile females stand guard over a ruined city of another race which has been converted into a common breeding ground where massive broods of nymphs grow, feeding on rats and other small animals that have been "farmed" on midden heaps. When the young mature shortly before the next breeding season they are driven out into the surrounding wilderness to claim a territory of their own resulting in pie-slices of territory around the city and rings of additional territories that spread out until coming into conflict with other civilizations eventually resulting in another breeding ground being established.
D&D Pictionary... but with literal grasshopper monks. The pun potential is simply in overload for dad jokers like us! Great video, Matt! Spice it up even more, you say? Giving your party flight at early levels like this could be dangerous, but if the item they are seeking is something like a magic carpet or broom of flying, this could make that surfing encounter even crazier than it already is! Can't wait to see you hit 1,000! Keep up the great work!
Fantastic video. I'd been looking for something to spice up a desert section of my D&D world, and Thri-Kreen are the exact kind of thing I needed. I feel that the inability to speak common and exotic languages, but still having them as intelligent creatures with their own methods of communication gives them a real nice unique aspect, especially as they're not evilly aligned either. My immediate thoughts on how to use them would be to have it as a scenario where two tribes alerted a Thri-Kreen hive(?) by encroaching on their land, and in return the Thri-Kreen lashed out to drive the tribes away, however never strayed too far from where they were first sighted due to their isolationist mindset. This could lead the party to act initially as a group hired to remove the "pests" plaguing both tribes, but ultimately discover what they actually are, and ultimately turn what would be sold as an extermination type quest into a quest of diplomatic envoys. People really have been sleeping on these guys with their huge range of possibilities. As for why they've been overlooked, it's probably due to the Tarrasque on the page before, lol. Something I would like to see you cover somewhen would be the Kuo-Toa. They too are usually overlooked and don't get the spotlight very often despite their interesting history, character, and rather unique skillset for some relatively low CR creatures. You really deserve more subscribers for the clear amount of effort you put into these videos, and bless the UA-cam algorithm for recommending some to me.
I haven't seen hide nor hair of the Thri-Kreen for a long while, poor angry clicky ant bois they deserve more play definitely, lets see if I can cram them in my ongoing campaign like I did with the Myconids. These are great videos, they're really useful keep up the great work!
I put a Thri Keen and their well guarded nest in Undermountain. The party wouldnt dare to wander inside, let alone attack the guard. Telepathy is scary or shit
The Thri-kreen are intrinsically tied to the Dark Sun setting, where they’re presented with a lot more depth than their bare bones stat listing in the monster manual. If you really want to run them, it might be worth it to try getting a hold of one of the old Dark Sun Campaign Setting books from one of the previous editions.
how about this, in the temple, there is say (to be cliché) a maiden chained to a sacrificial altar (for some reason I'll leave up to the DM) just outside the rear entrance, if the party is peaceful in their approach the Thri-Kreen hide her before the party approaches to keep her hidden from them, if the party manages to catch the runner, then she's on a bit of a ticking clock, and if the party fails to, she'll be "safe" as the Thri-Kreen are more concerned with the aggressors then the person who can't fight back, 1 and 2 create a dilemma, as they need the item, however a presumably innocent person's life is in danger, so do they take the item and run, or do they free the maiden and now during the rock slide they have to protect a NPC and keep the item in their possession, the NPC could also lead into future adventures involving Thri-Kreen (assuming any of them from the temple survived), as the party has taken both their captive and their bait.
I've made a tri'kreen encounter, they love it and now they are friends. Destiny taught me how to speak it [insect like chattering] one of the players insult the tri'kreen mom because they don't have the tongue to speak their language
I love the Thri-Kreen I have been trying to find or make a balanced Thri-Karen player race but there is no good way to have four arms and still be balanced
Well of course, a Thri-KAREN is way to op with it's "talk to the manager" special ability ;) Haha joking aside, just because something has multiple limbs, that doesn't mean you HAVE to give them a ton of attacks. I think the balance issue more lies within the built-in advantage on stealth checks, standing leap, and paralyzing bite built into the character. But minds greater than ours will figure it out eventually lol.
I definitely agree to make any encounter good The d.m should always think about how to use the terrain with the encounter. These creatures remind me so much of The chimera ants in hunterXhunter, No doubt Your imagination can do quite a bit with these. Also like the fact that They speak in a very unique way Not to mention there abilities are quite cool I can't wait to run this monster Thanks again so much for the ideas and the encounters.
One of my players is playing a thri-kreen in my game and even though he is a veteran DM he loves roleplaying his charater Nikks due to him not being able to speak
Im not sure why, but ive always assumed that female Thri-Kreens, have brown chitin with red eyes, smaller antenna, slimmer build and wasp wings. Am I close?
Thanks for watching!

Yes! Learned about them first in Dark Sun. The halflings in Dark Sun are hilarious too, being cannibals.
Ha Ha Ha. Oh cannibalism - how you make me chuckle
This series is criminally underrated. I love it!
Thank you, good sir!
I agree, this channel gave me a lot of great ideas, I didn’t use his ideas, but he inspired me to create my own.
Just wanted to add, thanks to the rules coming out of Tashas’ Cauldron, you can have one as a sidekick, if you can convince em.

Flight at lower levels can definitely be a hassle, but one person zipping around on a flying broom would be pretty sweet haha.

Very cool ideas!
And if you're looking for a Kuo-toa encounter, don't worry - it's coming soon ;)
Justice for the Thri-kreen! This video has inspired me to run some sweet desert combat with these awesome bug people.
Love to hear it. Glad I could help!
This and the Nightwalker ideas are 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Man, just as I’m about to add these guys to my campaign I find this video. Thanks a lot bro. Helped a lot 🙂

These are great videos, they're really useful keep up the great work!
Thanks! I hope the myconid encounter went well!
@@HiddenNerdySide Quite well thankyou, everybody loves a good hippie drum circle.
I play one currently who’s a hexblade rogue archeologist who finds fakes and peddles artifacts and bought a magic sword
as a bug lover i say thank you
Such a fantastic encounter. Love these guys.
Just realized I need to binge this channel
A wise choice!
I put a Thri Keen and their well guarded nest in Undermountain. The party wouldnt dare to wander inside, let alone attack the guard. Telepathy is scary or shit
I love Thri-Kreen
They have ninja stars, I love them.

I've heard a great many things about the Dark Sun setting. I'll have to take a look!

Love me some hard choices in D&D. This encounter is HNS approved!
I've made a tri'kreen encounter, they love it and now they are friends. Destiny taught me how to speak it [insect like chattering] one of the players insult the tri'kreen mom because they don't have the tongue to speak their language
Glad I’m not the only guys who use these fellas. Players even adopted one of the children by accident, so fun times are to be had.
Love it!
Back in 2e They were a playable race!
Dark Sun and later Spelljammer?
I love the Thri-Kreen I have been trying to find or make a balanced Thri-Karen player race but there is no good way to have four arms and still be balanced

They're so underrated because they're desert creatures
Very true - too little desert encounters in 5e!
Quaggoths and Grey Rendors separately of course
Going on the list!

Chimera ants in D&D.... you've just given me a great video idea :)
@@HiddenNerdySide Awesome one of the things my DM used to tell me is that inspiration is everywhere.
you should make a encounter about kobolds they are a really fun monster also I loved this video it helped me a lot
Already done! Check it out in the encounter playlist!
@@HiddenNerdySide Ok thanks 👍
How about some good Genie encounters?
One of my players is playing a thri-kreen in my game and even though he is a veteran DM he loves roleplaying his charater Nikks due to him not being able to speak
It's a really cool quirk that can add tons to roleplaying!
Im not sure why, but ive always assumed that female Thri-Kreens, have brown chitin with red eyes, smaller antenna, slimmer build and wasp wings. Am I close?
Fantastic video! Could you do a video on Ixitxachitls?
Thanks! And I'll do a video once I can nail down how to pronounce it haha
@@HiddenNerdySide don't worry about pronouncing it there's been like 11 or 12 official pronunciationsa!
This is so cool
You sir, need to Dark Sun yourself ;)
Lol I made this a playable race.
:)
