My family grewup, up the street from Pottosville Station. My dad has alot of good memories from the 50's and 60's when he was young and I have 3 generations of Reading Line workers.

My son loves RDC'S he thinks they are highly underrated rail transportation vehicles and that they should be preserved, restored, and put back into service on lines that don't get rail service anymore carrying both passengers and mail. He also thinks that Progress Rail, Siemens, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build full scale working replicas of these and the departments of transportation should run them on tracks that have been abandoned and should be restored and used again.

These are the best train ever with such versatility ...engines can be exchanged quickly , can run on one engine ..So roomy and comfortable inside ..Why don't they bring these back....So great

gacj2010 SEPTA got rid of all their diesel train equipment in the 1980s because it was malfunctioning and SEPTA did not take good care of it and they were too lazy to maintain it.

Budd DID try to build the "next generation RDC". It was called the SPV2000. It was a colossal failure. Why couldn't Budd pull it off? I have no idea.

RDCs have to be the toughest passenger rail cars ever made. The total running hours on some of these units would raise your eyebrows. Decades ago when fuel was dirt cheap, these cars would sometimes idle around the clock in bitter cold climates.

And when Budd tried to build the successor (the SPV2000), it was an absolute, disastrous failure. So sad.

I've never seen these cars before but will try looking up some history of the production of them. It would be great to ride them and also go to the Yuegling Brewery after and have a couple of cold ones over a little train talk.

Detroit diesel engines, right? I think they're the 110 series, which are quite rare. I see they're smoking, that means they're in good condition, LOL.

If its not smoking and leaking oil, A Driptroit Diesel is out of oil, and out of service.

GM got the mail Reading carried put on it's trucks, that was the end of the passenger services. Loss of volume killed interest in it by the Reading. It bankrupted the whole coast to coast private passenger rail system. Not too many points on the Reading have commercial air services so not much goes by air.

@@kevinwong6588 Let's see they made billions off killing city rail street railways. And they then gave up and went home! No they saw a sick passenger rail industry and made their move to kill it too. But much more careful so the government would not be on their tail like with the street cars.
