Titus Pullo The living have to deal with really hard shit, too, though. The dead don't have to suffer, the living do. That quote also omits Dumbledore's addendum: "Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love."
Every time I watch a vlogbrothers video, especially "thoughts from places", I feel more and more honored to be part of something larger than myself, something amazing, something powerful, something humbling, and something that becomes more and more thought provoking everyday. I am proud of who I am, who I've become, and how this community has shaped that.
you said this video is scary... i live in vienna and I never noticed there are so many stonebabys here...and it is very difficult to do to Uni without blinking!!
A dear friend of mine died 5 months ago. He was a bit of a thinker, a very caring person, overall one of the best people I've ever met, had and has a huge impact on me. His philosophical motto was "Live life as if it were your own." Therefore I try to do that with him in mind. I owe him that.
These "Thoughts from Places" vlogs are by far my favorite series that you guys have done. I love seeing the places you go and the thoughts they inspire you with. It all just makes me want to travel more.
This year I lost two of my relatives in one weekend: an uncle, who was the sweetest and most forgiving uncle to colon cancer, and my 21 year-old cousin in a motorcycle accident. This thanksgiving we had a melancholy feast . We lived through this magnificently prepared homecooked thanksgiving in remembrance of those we had lost, and because of my recently acquired knowledge of death, I think that's all the dead need: for us to remember them kindly, and to love them. All they need from us is love.
John, it's videos like this that remind me how amazing of an author you are. These "Thoughts from Places" videos make me love this channel so much more.
I love the Thoughts from Places series. You guys have such wonderful things to say and you do it in such an eloquent way. It's really wonderful. I also just really love catacombs...
John you and your brother make the world smile soo much, John with your masery of the written word and Hank with musical. You both are immensly entertaining to watch and also poignant raising attention to pressing and important issues that face your life and ours Thank you both for being here.
John, I think your Thoughts from Places videos are my favorite videos of yours. They're funny, entertaining, and extremely thought-provoking. They almost always give me a new perspective on life. Oh, and I've never heard of William Kentridge, but I simply must look him up, because if John Green likes him, then he MUST be awesome.
I did a lot of traveling in college. Vienna was the last place I visited with one of my best travel buddies before graduation. Neither of us got to travel again after college, but we always talked about our memories and things we'd do "next time." She died in an accident this summer. We're only 25. I put off watching this video for a week because I felt like I couldn't enjoy remembering Vienna without her. How odd that I had to answer your question for myself BEFORE I could even watch the video!
I showed this video to my class of Anthro 101 students today and I just have to say that they loved it! Thank you so much for not forgetting to be awesome!
John, you need to do one of these videos for Barcelona. This one from Vienna aroused so many little memories from my trip to Vienna when I was 5 that I had completely forgotten. Which I appreciate A LOT.
I love that every time I watch your video, I expect to laugh or learn something or both (which I nearly always do), but I'm always surprised how often you force me to think, whether it's about people or the world around us or just a deeper part of myself. So yeah... Thanks.
On this day, 18 months ago my mom died of cancer. Up to that point, grieving was something vague. The death of a loved one leaves a gaping crushing void inside that is difficutl to describe accurately. But as John wrote "you can never love someone as much as you miss them". I haven't read truer words. . If anything is owed to them is to cherrish their memories. Only when forgotten are they truely gone.
Please get yourself back to Vienna in spring or summer. Just about the friendliest city I've ever visited, certainly still the most important city in the world for we who still delight in the music of the Great Masters. Thanks for bringing back many memories even the greys of winter. Get back to show us the colour of summer.
I'm loving these thoughts from places; as for what we owe the dead, we owe them our history and culture. Our cites and cathedrals are built upon the lives, mistakes, loves, and successes of millions of people, ones who are as human as we are today. They buried their dead, just as we do today, giving a little thanks for the things that the deceased contributed to society.
almost 100% of people really really like your posts. that is one INCREDIBLE percentage and definitely something to be bragged about. its rare to find something that 100% of people agree on and find enjoyable. in fact i don't think ive ever seen it before. congrats. giant steps for the human race happen on your videos
In my case, I eventually decided that I owed it to her to remember Vienna on my own. She was such a special person, and knowing her shaped who I am today. I also thought of her family, who I only met once (at the funeral). She always talked about them with pride. For their sake, my friends and I need to keep her memory bright. They remember her as a daughter and a sister, but we know her as a classmate and friend. The memory isn't complete without us. So, I watched and remembered Vienna and her.
At the time that this video was made, I was studying in Vienna. In fact, my Uni was right off of Kaertnerstrasse, and I don't know if it was on the same day, but I have definitely stood in that crowd watching that very same dance team. At the time, I didn't know that the vlogbrothers / John Green existed, but the idea that I may have shared that moment in time and space with the same person whose vlogs have been setting wheels in my head spinning all month is pretty thought provoking and cool.
The fact that a person can leave a legacy and touch peoples lives in such a way is wonderful gift. I believe the thing we owe the dead is to live up to the legacies of the ones who mean most to us.
@gdespain I lost my father at 19 and am now 22. I would completely agree with you that all we can do is live our lives in the way we believe they'd approve of. And do all of this with strength, courage, and of course... resilience. Stay strong.
Kentridge is one of my favorite artists as well. :) I was fortunate enough to hear him speak here in Detroit and he proposed one of the most profound questions/ideas I'd ever heard. "What is one's relation to one's younger self? If you met in the street would you recognize each other? Would you feel embarrassed? When you look at an old photo of yourself you feel a sense of apology. You want to say 'I'm sorry. I was meant to be taking care of you, and I turned you into this'"
I love how John (and Hank) start off their videos being so fun and goofy and then become really serious and thoughtful at the end, but that's what I love about them.
I love it when I see somewhere I recognise on these videos and living in England it's not common. Vienna is probably my favourite city in the world and I love the Stephansdom catacombs! Wish you guys would come to England soon!
you and hank are so deep. i love watching your thoughts from places because A) i love watching travel videos about place me and my family are too poor to go and B) to hear your special, life changing (well..sorta xD) messages at the end.
We owe them not to forget. I remember something you said one time about how most celebrities now-a-days will not be remembered in 100 years because they did not contribute drasically to our society. In the same video, you said that if you want to be remembered and cherished you have to impact someones life, and I remember you said being a spectacular english teacher that your students wil tell their children about, is someone who will be remembered. Thats what we owe. man that was deep...
You have no idea how much you made me miss Germany, even though this is Austria. They look so similar to me. I loved this thoughts from places more than I have any other and I really don't understand why. They are all great, this one was just especially amazing to me.
I saw your name on the back of the Hunger Games novel where you said it was brilliant and I almost had a heart attack because I was just not prepared to see you there! I am definitely going to read it since it has the John Green stamp of approval ;) haha. And Austria looks lovely as well!
We owe the dead a place in our memories. Because whether it be a friend, an enemy, or a stranger, everyone deserves to be remembered in some way, shape, or form.
I was actually in Vienna a couple of times and its nice to see some places I know and hear John talking about them. Hey John could you do one about Prague? It is a beautiful city and I am sure you will love it!
If I could give something to my ancestors before me, it would be to live as well and as passionately as I can, to enjoy as much of this world they left me as I can, to make the world a more beautiful place for those who will come after me, and to feel gratitude for the lives that gave me the chance to do so.
Vienna is probably my favorite city and I really want to go back someday. I went there around this time when I was in 10th grade. It was so beautiful. I hope you got to go to the Christmas markets because they were so magical to me when I was there.
We owe the dead rememberance, but not just for them but for ourselves also. It is painful to give up our memories of our loved ones, and I don't think that any one wants to be forgotten
I studied in Wien. This video made me so nostalgic. I miss the christmas markets! thanks john! baby, baby, baby, baby, rotating Mozart head, baby, baby...
I have finished the entirety of Vlogbrothers and now I'm just going back and watching them over again because I feel so lost without that friendly and understanding presence of John and Hank. I have felt myself become more pleased with who I am as a person, but also acutely aware of how judgmental the rest of the world is. Lord. You've ruined me for normalcy, Green brothers.
I've had three major losses in my life so far, all of them sudden. My mom's sister died in her sleep and was found by her son in 2005. A year ago this Saturday, a friend from elementary school committed suicide. Then, last July, a high school classmate (with whom I had graduated less than a month before) died in a freak car accident. All I can about is how much life they had and how it was snuffed so fast. I used to watch those 15 minutes every night and I loved that program! :)
John! Just had Paper Towns delivered from a UK store! Very excited about reading it, i will let you know what i think, although i am sure it is fantastic!
I'm increasingly viewing John's videos as my tri-weekly dose of Yoda-like teachings on life...
Keep it up, and DFTBA
I CANNOT CONTAIN MY LOVE FOR THIS MAN.
John, as Dumbledore once said, "do not pity the dead Harry, pity the living."
Stuff that. Living is awesome!
Titus Pullo The living have to deal with really hard shit, too, though. The dead don't have to suffer, the living do.
That quote also omits Dumbledore's addendum: "Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love."
I always love John's Thoughts From Places the most, because everything he says can be quoted as an inspirational quote and I love it.
Nearly 3 years now, John! You should come back! There are so many nerdfighters here..
Every time I watch a vlogbrothers video, especially "thoughts from places", I feel more and more honored to be part of something larger than myself, something amazing, something powerful, something humbling, and something that becomes more and more thought provoking everyday. At 0:58 I thought he was gonna say "Look at all those chickens." Then I realized that this video was nearly 5 years old :(
I THOUGHT THE EXACT SAME THING!! lol
This comment is now 5years old tine man
These "Thoughts from Places" vlogs are by far my favorite series that you guys have done. I love seeing the places you go and the thoughts they inspire you with. It all just makes me want to travel more.
When my mom lived in Slovakia (what was then Czechaslovakia) her friends and her would juggle oranges to hitchhike to vienna

Why is it that Viena always is a little closer to the death than other places?
what about salzburg though?
John, it's videos like this that remind me how amazing of an author you are. These "Thoughts from Places" videos make me love this channel so much more.
I think Beijing has the world`s grayest skies
Only when you can see the sky.
Another fantastic video. I thank you for that.
Whenever you do video's in this format, they always seem to turn out fantastically good.
yeah, babies. WEEPING ANGEL BABIES!
Oh good, I'm not the only one thinking DON'T BLINK!
Supermarniela Whatever you do, DON'T BLINK!
+Christopher Johnson Blink and you're dead! They are FAST, faste4 then you can imagine!
he he he
I love the Thoughts from Places series. You guys have such wonderful things to say and you do it in such an eloquent way. It's really wonderful.
I also just really love catacombs...
1:30- Male mich wie deine Französische Frauen.

Your videos always force me to see the world in a different light. Thank you.
I love Thoughts from Places so much! I love the mixture of beautiful reflections and hilarious findings. Keep making them!
I showed this video to my class of Anthro 101 students today and I just have to say that they loved it! Thank you so much for not forgetting to be awesome!
Your videos always seem to make me laugh in the right places and pensive in the others. Great work, Brothers Green
I adore Thoughts from Places :) It's kind of like the best thing that's ever happened to UA-cam.
John, you need to do one of these videos for Barcelona.
This one from Vienna aroused so many little memories from my trip to Vienna when I was 5 that I had completely forgotten. Which I appreciate A LOT.
Your videos always make me think about things I would usually take for granted. Thank you.

Why John do your videos always leave me with a statement that gives me goosebumps?
WHY U SO GOOD AT WORDS?
Your "Thoughts From Places" videos are always so profound.

Aaaahhhhhhh these are the BEST vlogbrothers videos! No question about it.
These videos are so wonderful and thoughtful, yet humorous.
I live in Vienna, and enjoy your vlog. Nice to see the two come together!
I love your Thoughts from Places videos so freakin' much. Never stop making them, 'kay?

Your videos "Thoughts frim places" always blow me away.
These travel videos are some of my very favorites.

The two of you always ask the most thought provoking questions.
i could listen to you talk for hours, it's just so entertaining.

John, you need to travel more. Because Thoughts from Places is pretty much always the best thing ever.

John, please keep traveling, recording and thinking, and then do a thoughts-voice-over to the recordings, I love it!
I truly love when you do this sort of video.
When you both make videos you inspire me to travel and view it in a new artistic way

i'm from vienna and it's so weird watching john seeing all this places that i see everyday
This is my favorite "Thoughts From Places" so far.

ALL of his videos are so beautifully poetic.

We owe the dead a place in our memories. Because whether it be a friend, an enemy, or a stranger, everyone deserves to be remembered in some way, shape, or form.
We owe them respect and nothing less nor more. They worked to shape our world, for better or for worse which, despite anything else, is admirable.
I was actually in Vienna a couple of times and its nice to see some places I know and hear John talking about them. Hey John could you do one about Prague? It is a beautiful city and I am sure you will love it!

Your videos are always so poetic.
We owe the dead rememberance, but not just for them but for ourselves also. It is painful to give up our memories of our loved ones, and I don't think that any one wants to be forgotten
I love how all the thoughts from places go from hilariously funny to really thoughtful in about 2 minutes.
My first and favorite vlogbrothers video.
You are so poetic. It wasn't until TFP started that I began to see the connection between john green and john green's books.
I didn't have school today, so an entertaining and thoughtful VlogBrothers video will suffice :D
As a long-time nerdfighter who has recently been very busy, I want you to know that your intelligence is very refreshing.
I studied in Wien. This video made me so nostalgic. I miss the christmas markets! thanks john!

You spoke in such a thoughtful voice and in the same way as in TFIOS. Amazing
john, you make travel seem even more incredible than I already know it to be.
I still can't get over the fact that you were here and I missed it :-( Glad you enjoyed Viena though, hope you'll come back one day...
Mr. Green, there are very few people on Earth I respect as much as you.
I love your "thoughts for places" videos they make my feel like im traveling when i really cant!
John! Just had Paper Towns delivered from a UK store! Very excited about reading it, i will let you know what i think, although i am sure it is fantastic!
after these videos i always have to pause and think because they're almost overwhelming. I like it.
