  • This is the generically-titled "BMW E36" (HDP-1484) from a Sony-made high-definition 12" HDVS videodisc. The HDVS disc format was designed to be a highly portable 12" laserdisc-derived media format for Sony's "High-Definition Video System" or "Hi-Vision" back in the early 1990's! Back then, high definition was a little different from how it is now. It was analog (not digital) & close to but slightly different in resolution to the 1080i picture we receive over the air today as it was technically 1125i/1035i. Before the earliest high-definition media was available to the public (via satellite, MUSE Laserdisc, & W-VHS tapes), Sony and other companies began shooting footage, doing research, and, showing public displays of high-definition television. There were three main ways of storing HDTV (or HDVS) at that time: Reel-to-reel tape (HDV-1000), cartridge tape (HDV-10 "UniHi"), & 12" Laserdisc-style discs (HDL-5800 / HDL-2000). This footage came from one of the Laserdisc-style discs.
These HDVS discs could only hold a maximum of 15 minutes of video (on CLV discs, even less on CAV discs)...but it held uncompressed, raw high-definition component video! Take that, Blu-Ray!
This video is a compilation of footage regarding the design of the BMW E36, a compact luxury car announced in late 1990 & released in early 1991. This video uses true HDVS footage, along with CG film scans, to show the design of the chassis, engine, suspension, transmission, and more. The video also emphasizes the design of the interior and exterior featuring some very clean yet distinctly 90's shots. While the footage was shot beautifully, the video originally featured no audio & the editing of this disc is very rough. It was produced by Steiner-Film.
It is currently unknown what the purpose of this disc was, but segments shown in this disc have been spotted in various HDVS applications such as early HDTV interactive demos by the ATSC working group in the USA, along with sales material by Sony themselves. (Do you have more information? Please comment below!)
Enjoy this very classy HDVS footage of a truly classic car!

This was recorded off on a Sony HDL-2000 Videodisc player which outputs analog component (1035i) video. Uploaded in the upscaled 4K ProRes for extra clarity!
NOTE: The disc originally had no audio. I've added some selected tracks from Unit 9's library music album, "State Of The Art."

    Analog High Definition Quality. (1035i)
There was already high definition quality before the blu-ray.
    Looks clean and clarity.
Like if this was made today.

In 1992 I was so lucky to see this exact video on a Sony 2x2 videowall at IBTS (International Broadcasting and Television Show) in Milan. At the time I was working as a video engineer at a TV station and I knew the limits of a good 625/50 color image. The HDVS footage was simply jaw dropping!

this video quality is amazing. its almost confusing how it looks so old and analogue but is so clean at the same time.

This is extremely high quality footoge for the time! Stenier-Film in Munich unfortunately closed down last year. I've recently aquired the 3x HDD1000s that were used in their edit suite and on which this video was originally edited. There was no open reel tape left in there though, just some HDCam tapes here and there. As I've said in a previous comment, I've seen this video at Sony boothe at a fair in 1992 on both a Sony 2x2 videowall and an HDM-3830 monitor and the source was an HDD-1000. There is a big difference in quality between the originali digital footage and the analog optical disc and also digital compression used by YT is degrading the quality if the image isn't a still frame. But even with these limitations, this video is a nice experience for average people that didn't worked with those video systems in the days they were the only way to produce HD contents. Thanks for the good acquisition job!

Wow. Found this out just now after coming from a 1993 tech demo of the original Sony Playstation. It's mind-blowing.. Sony really did have a lot of quirky techs and formats.. Thanks for uploading this gem.

I've always wondered what that BMW disc was when i first saw it on LDDB, Thanks!!
A couple of BMW's we're used in Sony's Technofair event a year earlier to demonstrate their car audio system, im guessing they both had some form of partnership around that time?

Thanks for the info! I wouldn't be surprised. Bose started the whole brand-name-OEM-car-audio thing in the 80's and, by around this time, a whole bunch of companies were attempting to hop on the bandwagon (Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, Alpine, Clarion, etc)!

Do you have a 3D HDVS videodisc? We're those compatible with the HDL-2000 player?

I do not have 3D HDVS discs at the moment, but yes, they are compatible with the HDL-2000, and I do have a workflow to capture & process them if I obtain some one day.

Is there a way to obtain this video file in 1080 or something? Asking as I own an E36 coupe and this video with the audio system in the car and a monitor attached to the side rear quarter glass, would make for a sort of showcase/etc and really add to the vibes it gives off.
