      Jamie O'Connell things certainly are not in complete gray, there can be some things with more black then white a vice versa. Saying something can be wholely black or white is a bit much. Say things like "true evil exist" is a bit much.

    I really love the way the weasel is walking away at the end because it tells us so much about her character. All through-out the movie, whenever she killed someone, she showed this pride a hunter has, moving fast with her kill between her fangs, grinning and snarling. Yet, in this last scene she sadly and slowly drags Leafies corpse away. At this point she understood our heros sacrifice. She didn't saw just some prey animal anymore but a mother like herself.

      While I think that's probably true (the fact that she didn't want to kill Leafie I mean, understanding her sacrifice, seeing another mother instead of just prey), there is another explanation for the slow dragging. When Leafie looks at the weasel she is on the verge of collapse. She is panting and trembling on her leggs, she can barely stand. So dragging a kill would also be much harder. I also feel that the weasel crying is, yes, probably partly because she doesn't want to kill Leafie, but also they are tears of relief. She really doesn't look like she has a chance of killing any recently fit prey in her state. Don't forget that just prior she spend the energy fighting two possible prey without result already as well. So this free kill is the miracle she never thought she'd get but one she desperately needed.I just saw this is a 3 year old comment, but eh, I'll post this anyway.

    In the UK version they didn't fully censor it and the movie ends after league says the weasel can eat her and the weasel steps fowards and leafie closes her eyes. They just cut the weasel jumping which is a bit of a shame bc seeing the weasel cry for leafie is a super emotional part of the movie
    It's weird how the censorship varies though I wish they just wouldn't censor it at all

    • @MelonTartVA
      @MelonTartVA 6 років тому +85

      Corvid Katana the american version cut the entire sacrifice. Which when you think about it, has much darker implications than just showing Leafie sacrifice herself for the children of the one that took Greenie's birth parents.
      To me, cutting that segment implies that one-eye and her kits didn't survive the winter, while Leafie did.
      But this is still a movie I would show my nephew and future children.
      It tackles adopted families with the maturity and respect it deserves.

    • @kinaadman7584
      @kinaadman7584 6 років тому +17

      @Melon Tart Yes, somehow that is one of the possibilities. But I think the female weasel wouldn't starve her children to death, she's a predator, she can hunt like she did before and for me, I like this ending because it tackles the survival of the fittest and the mother's unconditional love for their children.

    • @MelonTartVA
      @MelonTartVA 6 років тому +32

      Cambiel Mebahiah but think about it.... during the winter, the weasel's natural prey would either be hibernating or flown south for the winter. So there is a high likelihood that without leafie's sacrifice, she and her babies would die. And rhe censored ending gives that vibe

    In spanish they did a kind of a midway. They visually cut the part in which the weasel appears, but left the sound intact. So while you see the flying shot that ends the english dub, you hear Leafie's last words and the movie ends with the weasel's scream. Interestingly, it happens that the weasel scream is heard when the credits have just started to roll... So it catches you off guard. I think thay surprisingly, it makes it even more intense.

    It is a shame this was cut. I saw the cut version and I wondered did the weasel target her out of vengeance for what she did to her babies?
    After seeing this it sheds light on my question, and gives the whole scene a more touching feeling. The Weasel is shedding tears, which means she understood that this fellow mother was sacrificing herself for her (the weasels) children.

    • @dennythesavage
      @dennythesavage 7 років тому +37

      X Zelxski i know, it makes you sympathize with the weasel, because the weasel is crying, she didn't want to kill Leafie, but she had too. They shouldn't have edited that part out, it's very powerful for her to shed tears at the idea of killing a mother that helped keep her babies warm.

    • @QueenofTaterTots
      @QueenofTaterTots 6 років тому +29

      No, she knew that Leafie wasn't really going to hurt the babies, she saw her warming them and keeping them safe, but her motherly instinct told her to scream at her to get away from them, but as Leafie looked back while taking Greenie away, they had a mutual understanding as One-eye narrowed her eye, she decided to pursue her, likely to talk or demand what that was, but Leafie knew she was so sick and weak and hens can't really survive out in winter in the wild without proper warmth or anything, and One-Eye was slowly starving to death, you can see she is malnourished by how she shakes even when standing or her ribs in the previous scenes with her at the burrow, and Leafie knew she too would struggle finding food in winter, so she offered herself up

And the movie leaves an amazing plot that continues in the minds of (some) viewers: what would Greenie do, feel and say after coming back home--especially if you remember their promises to each other, it kinda portrays real life, you did what you dreamt but your parents are not there anymore.so tragic. Kids can understand death a lot more than adults think. I'm pretty sure many kids could handle the uncensored ending just fine, maybe a little sad but fine. Plus, this ending more appropriately shows the truth of life, there is no true good vs evil because no one is truly evil. There are simply people who have made bad choices, people who are hurting or people who are still in need of aligning their moral compasses. In the case of the weasel, she was just a mother trying to feed her children.

      Didn't mean it that way, it's ok to be selfless and have compassion (god knows the world needs more of that), Leafie knew she would die slowly and painfully during winter and chose to go on her own terms, THAT is admirable and very very brave; what I meant in my past comment was that compassion does not equal selfsacrifice. Moreover I doubt she would have done that if she had another option and maybe meet her son in the future or maybe still go to her death to save the weasels (which goes so against every survival instinct I have it gives me chills). The latter feels so wrong to me, that's all.

(Besides, showing her being dragged off makes her look more like a hapless victim than that strong woman who accepted her fate and sacrificed herself to feed the weasel's kits) Though, yeah, removing the tearful pounce I think was going a little overboard. If anything, that is what really makes the true ending so powerful, seeing the deep regret in the weasel's eye just when she's about to go in for the kill.

    This film shows well that life can be cruel even if you believe everything will be fine. I think this is a more correct message than "just believe in yourself and everyone will be happy" usually shown in children's cartoons, where the main character necessarily defeats the villain.
    Here we see a gray morality and a character who didn't have much happiness. Like in real life, there's not always a good ending, sometimes it's just rough from start to end.

    I watched this and was so upset for daisy. I mean she never did a bad thing to anyone, just wanted to have freedom and have kids. Where ever she went she was friendly and considerate but no one liked her. Like the heck

    The tears show a mixture of sadness and gratitude.
    She's grateful that Leafie understands her, but is sad to kill her.

    Thanks for this. The version I see, cut the part where Weasel jumps and drags her away, but I actually think the cut parts are redundant. It may be more final to see the done deed, but I found it a lot darker and poignant when the movie ended at Leafie saying she can't let the baby weasels starve. Because you just know she'll die.

      It's the weasel's scream that makes the scene worthwhile, I think; all that pain and rage...

      humans are animals too. but we can adapt more then most animals. i work in a deli and i hate seeing food go to waste because if an animal is killed it should be eaten. thankfully we have a method of recycleing meat for dog food so someone will still be fed. plus we are omnivores by nature.

    • @crowrosive
      @crowrosive 7 років тому +1

      Being an omnivore means you can eat a variety to survive not thrive humans often do better with less meat in their diet. Regardless it's fact that humans can thrive and get all their needed nutrition on a meat free diet (even the NHS has this on their website under diet information) so killing animals for meat for humans is unnecessary

    Saw it on Netflix yesterday. They have the scene with oneeye but it's sugarcoated a little. Daisy or Leafie says, I'm not going to survive the winter anyways which kind of take away from her true sacrifice as to say she was going to die anyways which wasn't implied at all in the original. They also edited out the weasel going in for the kill crying and Daisy being dragged away at the end. All man, that's even sadder to see. Netflix said it was rated G. Really? It was very good but to sad for kids.

    I think that the end shows the point of view of Leafy's soul, she leaving her body with the weasel and following Greenie. Although he can't see or feel her, the bird and the other seem to.

    One of the greatest mothers in film! The weasel killed her love and tried to hurt her baby. But, that moment of strength and forgiveness is such a powerful one! Leafie always cared about babies. She even kept them warm for the weasel! She wanted to be a mother even in death. And the fact the weasel cries! It's an understanding between mothers. It's really a powerful moment. I know why they censored it, but I feel everyone should know the real ending.

    I do understand why the english version does censor the ending, but the censorship makes it much darker if you think about it.
    This ending implies that one-eye and her kits died while Leafie kept living her life.

    It’s a shame this film got overlooked it had such amazing scenes and a lot of hard work put into it
    Puts the bad guys into a whole different perspective a desperate mother trying to feed her babies and knows that killing the hen is the only way she can do it even though it’s not what she wants to do

    Honestly, I just watched the censored version of this, and compared to the original one, i prefer the original by far
    The weasel is one of the most misunderstood characters Ive ever seen
    All she ever did was do what was necessary for her own babies to survive

    I cried when I watched the ending, I remember watching the movie when I was young and I was confused about the ending. But now that in 2024, I watched it again, and now I cried to realize what happened 😢 Leafie was brave to sacrifice herself to so the weasel could feed her babies. This movie shows so much on how moms are brave, hard working and sacrifices to do the right thing, and do anything for their kids and other people kids. Leafie and Weasel are those moms😢

    after finding out there was a full movie on youtube i watched last thursday night i did not see Leafie get eatin' by the weasel, i thought the aftermath of her adoptive duck son leaves flying and then she'll find a rooster mate and have her own biological chicks, has anybody think the same way too when 1st time watching it?
    but then i read on wiki that said that she decide to have suicidal thoughts for the weasel to eat her and i was a bit shock and i didn't believe it as i swear it didn't happened in the film until seeing this deleted scene movie which i am very shocked, i can't believe she misses out having her own mate in the future and finally have her own chicks of her dream gone, but good thing they deleted it, becus that would upset the Korean audiences to see their favourite Leafie character die right?
