Smokey Robinson once said that this album was not by Marvin Gaye. It was by God, who used Marvin Gaye as an instrument.
Smoky Robinson was on to something. This is one of the few transcendent albums of modern music.
Inner City Blues is one of the greatest songs. I'm glad you got to hear it.
A refreshing blend of soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop (before it was a thing) and funk with a touch of urban rock. Powerful lyrics that could make a difference in changing lives.
A good meal, a nice drink, some candles, and the company of your love, Chuck in a bit of Marvin and it's a perfect evening.
This album was Marvin Gaye Apex, in my opinion it has stood the test of time…
"Wholy Holy" -- The W in wholy is silent and the word is typically spelled wholly. It means entirely, fully. The phrase plays off the the way the two words, wholly and holy, sound the same while also carrying overlapping semantic entailments, to use some fancy words. The ambiguity adds to the openness of the poetry. What's Going On is easily an album of the century kind of album. A few of its stand out contemporaries include Van Morrison's Moondance, Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Beatles's Abbey Road, as well as Curtis Mayfield's Super Fly and Issac Hayes's Hot Buttered Soul.
The instrument it's a guiro
I love your videos and the passion you have!! Congrats
Wonderful reaction video, you have great taste. 🙂
Lovely reaction Verdy. Thank you.
Marvin played some piano on this album, maybe some percussion. But yes, he's primarily a vocalist. There are some video clips of Marvin from 1972 performing songs from this album (the audio recording from the Kennedy Center has been released). It might have been his first live performances since the death of Tammi Terrell four years prior, which really shook him up. The performance is a little rusty in spots, but this album was a magnificent achievement for Marvin that he never bettered (who could?) and the Kennedy Center recording is the only instance where he performed the entire album live. It's worth a listen to hear these songs in a live context.
I’m really interested in getting this album after listening to this now with you.
Yep, that's a flute.
I love the way you say violins because it sounds like violence, all the violence. Check out Marvin's "I Want You" album. It's my favourite album and is Sexy as Hell.
Such a great album. I was sure you would like side 2 as much as side 1.
You should listen to his song called 'walking in rain'

Orchestras. Years ago I caught a PBS program of Zubin Mehta conducting the Israeli Philharmonic Symphony. The program detailed Ravel's "Bolero". It used to be on YT. If you can find it, man its memorable and I'm not really an orchestral guy. There are other similar that you can find though.
Huzzah! My man Marvin, taking care of his business. Rock solid bass. Sweet Miss Verdy, google has a image search, and will identify things for you.
Marvins band is space-ship tight, man.
