Ah yes true! Though I noticed that in the film they establish the rules of the shields and then just totally ignored them, with people landing cuts at speed left and right... 🤔
@@im.just.kendall Haha point taken! It is weird to imagine how the great combatants in that lore--Gurney, Duncan Idaho, Paul, etc.--can take out dozens of soldiers if superlative speed is not part of the equation.
@@im.just.kendall It’s not that they ignore shields in the film it’s in most cases people aren’t using them because using them on Arrakis is a death sentence as it sends the sand worms into a frenzy so the Fremen have learned to fight without them and thus we do not see them in the duels.
@@im.just.kendall My head cannon is that the really good fighters are just really really well trained to hesitate just before the shield kicks in so they can move fast then slow for the final few centimeters.
The reason why the fast movements were used was because a lot of harkonnen soldiers had no shields. With their switch to the levitation packs they had to sacrifice the shields to preserve battery. Alongside their focus to more ranged instead of close range weapons the need for shields were decreased with the idea of I can shoot you before you reach me.
It's not just the batteries. Turning on your shield basically produces some sort of pulse rhythmically, and on Arrakis it'd draw Sandworms to that location. It's like a homing beacon for them lol.
@@rafidsadmanAlso getting shoot with a laser while using a active shield generates an atomic explosion. Theres a scene in dune 2 about that, a bunch of harkonne fly up a rock and start getting shot with lasers, and their "officer" starts yelling: "No shields no shields!", while his squad is getting wiped by a fremen with a laser gun.
Man, what a perfect scene you made with unbelievable and fluid coordination, as well as being very faithful to what was shown in the films and having the same care that Vi-Dan Tran and Roger Yuan did with the action in the film.
neat, I thought you looked familiar and then I checked your channel and it looks like you were the teacher character in the Corridor Crew lightsaber duel vid!
Yeah, I specifically DIDN'T want to deal with the conundrum of shield combat! lol They basically ignored it in the new films, which was odd because they made a big deal of explaining it. It would certainly make for some tricky choreo!
@@im.just.kendall Yeah. I guess in the films we’re supposed to believe the fighters in Dune are so skilled at shield combat that they can slow down and then speed up their attacks at precisely the right moment, making it _appear_ like they never really slow down at all. It really seems like they said “screw it.” Have everyone fight normally and we’ll just throw in the shield color effects to show if they made it through for a killing blow or not. Kinda disappointing. It would’ve been awesome and interesting to see how fighting styles have adapted to get around shields.
I used to carry a gun everyday. I'm moving back to a state where that's illegal. I need to learn this. I've done a little bit of trainging in fillipino martial arts through manuals but i need an actual teacher to make me good
I think with the sheilds to make the combat accurate to the books the sheilds stops fast movements but not slow. So maby they memorized were the sheild was so they stop right before contact and then go in slowly. The flashy movement would distract your opponent so you can slide your blade past the sheild. However I would thing their would be a lot of grappling as well.
So I remember seeing a movie trailer I believe on the DVD for godzilla Tokyo SOS, and there was a fight on a train in said trailer that was similar to fighting like this.
Funny you should ask! I’ve been teaching since 2007-ish, and I’ve put together an-ever growing instructional site for fight performance with weapons with my teacher Anthony DeLongis which will release ASAP! I’ll post about it when it’s ready!

Great stuff but seeing something like this 0:35 happen in a fight to the death and the antagonist not pressing the advantage made my eyes roll back into my skull. All stakes are removed and I’m not rooting for anyone anymore.
I thought it was really good, minor criticism tho is that you guys were still a bit too far away from each other most of the time. The thing I loved about the Dune fighting style was how close the two combatants are to one another, their bodies almost touching throughout the entire fight, because it makes the fight so incredibly tense. Anyone could die at any moment. You did sort of recreate that here, but it was still a bit too much like a normal sword fight
Ah ha, yes! We specifically did not want to choreograph it to be that close. The reason is just that since I have a blade that cuts without much need for torque (rather than an impact weapon), and because we're fighting in an open space, I'd MUCH rather work my long range to score my hit. If I get close and stay close, I risk everything if my attack fails because I have no time. Distance buys me the time. We do work in close range a bit, but it's tense and I'd rather get out. I like choreo that moves between the ranges for logical reasons and for a more dynamic story.
