As a note, you technically don't actually need to parent the props to a gate to be able to unparent them. That was only useful when we didn't have Multi-Unparent (and had to use Wire Sound Emitter to unparent). You can parent props to props and still be able to unparent them with said tool.
Multiparenting props to a gate isn't for Multi-Unparenting, it's so you can still change the color and material of said props, aswell as the props keeping their 'gravity' and 'physics'
I'm back with another problem... lol.... when I parent the car, if I don't uncheck the base prop, the wheels become detached, so when I do uncheck it, the front wheels roll on a different axis, making them flip sideways???
+A-Red Gaming You ONLY (and I do mean ONNLLYYY) parent detail props like the body and interior of your car. if you begin to parent wheels, baseplate, etc (moving / functional stuff), then it will all break.
I multi-parent the car and take the parent off of the wheels, but when I apply it and unfreeze everything, the car just falls down and the wheels go through the body, the car goes through the map a little, and the wheels just go in different directions too, and if I pick the car up, the wheels just dangle below it. Help?
Dr. Lee You should not parent thrusters if you want to use them for anything but effects. The stuff you put the thruster on is not supposed to be parented either.
I am trying to put a steering wheel which is rotating on an axis on my car but whenever I do this it just falls off. If I parent the steering wheel too it won't move. How do I stop the steering wheel from falling off while still making it possible to rotate?
You ONLY parent the props that represent the body. The chassis prop (main prop), the wheels, the engine, transmission, etc should still be welded to main prop.
It's best if you fix it yourself, then you learn stuff! :D Make sure it works before parenting then, to figure out if it's a parenting related issue. The only way to screw up a parenting related thing is to parent things that should not be parented.
Hi, I've got a dumb question, since I really can't find an answer to that. Does anyone know why parented props don't have collisions after duping with advdupe2?
Hi! Not a dumb question at all! The way parenting works is that it essentially removes physics - that's pretty much the idea behind. When removing the physics part, you get basically 0 physical lag coming from the parented props. Some people decide to make invisible, large props underneath to add a hitbox.
You're doing it correctly, then. Parented props do not collide with the world, so they should only be used for detail props (say the entire body of a car, etc.) - do make sure to look into Prop2Mesh (P2M), as this is a more efficient and modern way of making loads of props not lag compared to traditional parenting.
Pls help anyone! Adv. Duplicator doesn't let me to save parented car body! If I save game and load it later, parent doesn't save! Furthermore, the tool doesnt let me to select several props using shift+E+LMB! I dont want to lose my car body! What shoud I do?
You NEED to use area copy to save the car body using this tutorial. If nothing works, then turn "remove constraints" off and "No collide" on. Then just right click on a prop of the car. It does create one billion constraints though, so it won't work properly on a server. You should figure out how to use area copy instead.
If I reparent a prop will it remove any previous "parents"? I think I parented a car wrong and dont want to use multi unparent because it doesnt have area select. Any suggestions?
Yes, it removes "previous" parents and parents to the new prop you've selected. As far as I know, it's physically impossible to parent the same prop to two individual physical props.
Parented props lose their physics. If you want stuff to collide with your vehicle, then you need to make a seperate collision box around it. You can do this by welding plates wherever you want stuff to collide, then make those plates invisible. I didn't cover it in the tutorial because I didn't find it needed - it takes a lot of adjusting to get right.
Yeah, the thing is, up until Gmod 13, the parenting tool didn't need separate "hitboxs" for the player to collide with the bits and pieces. It's something I'm having trouble adjusting to.
I don't think so, because there would always be lots and lots of ghost props laying on the ground when you unfreeze the model, I could hear them falling on the ground after I unfroze them. I know this because people on the server would always complain if you spawned a train on the tracks as the ghost props can make other trains spaz-out as some trains aren't built as well as others..
Yeah, those were the physics dropping to the ground instead of staying on the vehicle creating the hitbox. I remember being annoyed by this in 2009 and it never changed, haha. The whole point of parenting is to remove the hitbox as that's what lags the servers. You might be thinking of PolyWeld which was a tool that "parented" but allowed for physics interaction. When >300 props were out and "parented" using this tool, the servers would still lag so the tool never really succeeded.
I followed your tutorial on making a basic steering system, and when I used this tutorial to make all the props I added to it one thing, the front wheels started spinning around in any direction they pleased, not just forwards and backwards then tilting left and right. Why has this happened? I redid it about 10 times over and had the same problem.
You don't parent anything that you created during the chassis tutorial. Nothing. Not the wheels, not the base, not the steering, not the wireboard. You only parent things like the body of the car, seats, dashboard, basically everything that should NOT be able to move independently.

Hey jack, how many props are your awesome vehicles? I am currently making a 458 Italia with my buddy, and we estimate we are using around 600 or so props. Just wondering if that'll cause any lag with parented props. Thanks!
Depends a bit on how you parent. You want to make sure you parent with the settings I show in the video (so the body is 0 constraints). If that's done, then it will only create clientside lag (FPS lag). Nothing serverside. However, if you use ACF, ACF's weight checker might make some slight straining issue because it constantly checks the weight of each prop on your car. This is minimal though. My cars are about 450 props, that is my max anyway. Good luck!
Yes, Advanced Duplicator 2 uses completely different ways to save your contraption. It's much better at it. It also has a lot more features and a better menu.
Take a look at my suspension & steering tutorial - if you axis your wheels, you don't get any suspension nor steering. However, just to answer your question, the axis would go to the chassis.
Making wheel hubs are as easy as can be. What you can do is take the prop you want to use as a wheel hub. Take easy precision and make it so it sits center on the wheel, then push it inwards using the tool. Then just parent the prop to the wheel. Done, wheel hub. If you're having issues getting to the prop, then left click on the prop you want to use as a wheel hub with the multi parenting tool out, so that the prop goes green. Then push it inwards to where you want it, THEN right click on the wheel with multi parenting tool. Making a tutorial for something this simple might be a bit odd, really. Have fun with the trick though, it works wonders and makes your cars look a lot better.
I'd like to but it's very hard to do E2 tutorials - it always ends up with the person not really wanting to know anything and just skipping to the end to copy the E2.

How the fuck do you use multiparent and still have ability to use engines... I mean your tires stayed on your car in this video... Wheels.. Are the engines Im using the propellers.... They fall off after I parent them once Ive put them on first and If I dont put the engines on first.... Once its parented the engines just fall off they wont even go on it. I cant even add a thruster to make my model flyable. This is bullshit. Ive been at this all night. Tried multiple different angles and everything I can think of and it just wont work. It will parent but it wont keep my engines and wont let me put any on it... To top it off I cant figure out how to clear advanced duplicator of my last selection. It copied only half my helicopter cause the box was too small when I tried it again it copied my helicopter PLUS the half I had first selected... -____- Can you help?
That would be because you do not parent things you want to be physical. I believe I explained this in the video - tires, base plate, propeller, engine(s), etc. are not to be parented. However, you attach them to the base plate by welding, axis, ropes, etc. Do not weld anything to a parented prop and do not attempt to parent an already welded prop.
To clarify I just tripple checked Im facing north. Couldnt get my spray to work after several tries someone suggested the paint tool and a smile then I read to use the command cl_showpos 1 and if the second number is 90 you are facing North. Helicopter nose is facing north and the tail rotor spins north to south the main rotor doesnt though not sure how that would work. The direction Im facing to put on propellers though shouldnt have anything to do with what Im doing. EDIT: Just loaded the save game from last nights work. It loads in and everything falls apart. its litterally just a pile of props banging together on load of save. Uhhhhhggg. -_-
I just make the chassis plate long enough to stretch from bumper to bumper. If you have collisions on base plate and on wheels (nocollided with each other, obviously), then you've got a pretty good collision zone.

Then because Im mutli parenting it do the base belly to grab with the phys gun I cant get it to stay on the skids because the moment I parent it falls through the earth till it hits the belly.
Can you help?
That would be because you do not parent things you want to be physical. I believe I explained this in the video - tires, base plate, propeller, engine(s), etc. are not to be parented. However, you attach them to the base plate by welding, axis, ropes, etc. Do not weld anything to a parented prop and do not attempt to parent an already welded prop.
To clarify I just tripple checked Im facing north. Couldnt get my spray to work after several tries someone suggested the paint tool and a smile then I read to use the command
cl_showpos 1 and if the second number is 90 you are facing North. Uhhhhhggg. -_-

En français S.V.P :D
Im late but is there anyway to make parented car frame have hitboxes or whatever that you cant go through it
I just make the chassis plate long enough to stretch from bumper to bumper. If you have collisions on base plate and on wheels (nocollided with each other, obviously), then you've got a pretty good collision zone.
Chris Boddum // Jackpody okay thank you i appreciate that you still reply to this old video
:D I attempt to hold an eye on all videos.
