Dumb Reason The US Lost A $1.4 Billion Aircraft
Вставка

- The B-2 Spirit Bombers are the most advanced stealth aircraft on Earth, from their custom design engine, to the technologically advanced surface sensors, this aircraft is a feat of engineering, costing around $1.4 billion dollars per plane. But what happened when the US Military (Air Force) lost one of their most prized stealth planes? What led to the dumb accident that cost $1.4 billion dollars?! Watch our latest video to find out!

These are aome of the most advanced planes in the world. Even if the way they talk seems convincing, this could be only fractions of how this flying machine was really made.
Top secret only means Congress actually got to hear all the details _before_ it was leaked to the press. :P
@@someguy3766 actually no. That isn't how it works. There are things even Congress cannot see. They were only told general things, not the specific knowhow or the mechanics. Despite the dunbasses that run the Senate and Congress, they all know what should be seen and not from the military.
Try to create the exact thing. They only gave out general outlines, not actual specifics of the design or materials, chemicals, treatment, metals, composites used.

So, I was a maintainer on the entire B-2 fleet for four years. A couple things. Each plane cost $2.2 billion, not $1.4 billion. The last maintainer that was on 0127 (Spirit of Kansas) was and still is to this day, one of the most intelligent and experienced maintainers the fleet has ever known and nothing he did was incorrect in any way. And one last thing, a Secret security clearances doesn't mean a whole lot. Nearly everyone automatically gets a Secret clearance within a few weeks of joining the USAF.
seems like one of those situations where tech data doesn't cover every technicality of the system. Positive is that this expensive malfunction most likely lead to immediate review and improved procedures for those sensors and/or software to prevent such a critical system failure during a freak accident like multiple sensor failures. Better to lose the plane during a non-combat training, especially with both pilots surviving, than have such a failure occur during wartime when it serves such a critical role.
Well this accident got more expensive
Do they have cup holders?
That wasn't what I was told by MOCC, the way I understood it he was at fault technically but that it wasn't properly explained in the TO and this was the crew chiefs first time in Guam.
Hi! Former B-2 Mechanic here. The cause of the crash was due to extreme humidity and rain . The environment of Guam is tropical so it rains frequently and is humid almost year round. The B-2 detects wind pressure through its Pitot plates located just under the nose near the NLG bay. Crew chiefs failed to inspect these plates (which have 6 tiny holes each, and there are 12 plates) for any type of fluid build-up. During take-off roll, Aircraft 127 Spirit of Kansas experienced an incorrect KIAS readout on the display due to the blockage in the pitot plates. This causes the pilot to over rotate as he thought he was going the proper T/O airspeed (he was going about 40 knots slower is I recall) and pitched the nose up 30 degrees and stalled just 3 seconds into flight. When the aircraft began to wing strike the grass after hitting the ground, the crew ejected safely. No one was hurt in the crash, but the B-2 was irreparable and unsalvageable. The pilot, a Colonel at the time, is still in service at Whiteman AFB in Missouri. I’ve met him, chill guy. This is to give a slight bit more insight to the accident.
One question sir. What happened with B-2 in operation in Serbia 1999? Supposedly one B-2 was shot down in Croatian forest, any comment on that? 🤔
@@Brka1108 It wasn't a B2 Spirit but it was a F117 Nighthawk

My (some years ago) Commander was actually the pilot injured in that crash. Though this whole ordeal happened in a matter of seconds, the way he tells the story makes it feel like a suspense filled bomb disarming scene as they desperately fought against the computer. The moments after the crash were pretty unreal as you could imagine. In fact even trying to put out the fire and clean up the site proved a challenge since even when wrecked (or ESPECIALLY since it was wrecked) there was highly classified pieces of equipment the firefighters weren't cleared to see (and it is now rightly joked that Anderson's firefighters have more experience putting out B-2 fires than their homebase of Whiteman).
The force of the jettison compacted several of his vertebrae, but luckily not only was he able to walk again (in fact adrenaline had him running the moment his seat touched the ground) but he was even able to fly AND pilot the B-2 again. This was of course after an extensive investigation with an impending sentence to Fort Leavenworth hanging over head (even the maintenance airmen would eventually be cleared of any wrongdoing). We've tried to get ejection seat as souvenir for the office, but even that piece has too much red tape around it.
Hi
This incident actually caused the maintenance commander to take responsibility and retire. He was an amazing guy and he deserved better but he did what he had to do to protect his men.
Wow did he say anything else about the experience? That’s one heck of a story. Glad he was able to punch out

@Yeetus Yeetus Kermit self deletus I like trains Can you imagine having ejection seats in an airliner :D that would be so cool! However most passenger wouldn't survive the extreme force of the ejection.
On the other hand there are concepts for parachutes, which detaches the passenger cabin from the plane and make a soft enough landing for most people to survive. Somewhat similar to the cirrus vision jet but for an airliner.
@Yeetus Yeetus Kermit self deletus I like trains Yes it would be extremely expensive and the plane would need to be redesigned since you can't shoot someone thru the luggage compartment into the ceiling :D
Remove the luggage compartment, reroute all the vents, cable etc and make the roof out of glass with explosive charges (like some fighter jets). However with the A380 and 747 you would also need to remove everything in the belly of the plane and let the people fall out :D
But I don't think that the altitude would be a problem since in the majority of plane crashes, the planes were stable enough to wait with the ejection until lower altitude is reached
