I am a foreigner living in Mexico City and my husband is from here. He is familiar with all of these neighborhoods. Tepito is dangerous and I have been told by 99% of my Mexican friends not to go. However, there are some cool things I would love to see here. My husband used to go to Tepito back in the day to buy things to resell and he always tells me not to go. If I ever have the chance to go with a University research group, I will. As for Garibaldi, the plaza you were at is just fine. At night there is a heavy police presence. I go there with my girlfriends alone frequently. There is a building next to Tenampa with about 2 dozen food places and we eat at one in particular all the time. The family who runs it is lovely and they told me that tourists are just fine in the plaza...just don't go out of the plaza! It is the area that surrounds the mariachi plaza that is apparently super dangerous...so much so that I won't take the Metro to this area. However, I once walked to Plaza Garibaldi from centro at night (around midnight) with a group of people and nothing happened. As for la Merced, I love la Merced! My husband and I go there a lot as he is super familiar with it. We buy produce, other food and stuff for the home. Whenever he is in town (he works out of town a LOT), he insists on going at least once a week just to eat there. There are areas of the market that are really sketchy though and I have seen some weird things there. I love it, but I always go with somebody who is familiar with the market...and I don't go with my "fancy/fresa" Mexican friends who look out of place because they seem to be the people who have the most problems with robberies here in the city! Wear running shoes, dress down, don't carry fancy purses, don't wear jewelry, don't take pictures, don't flash your newest iphone and you should be fine. Mexico City is such a fantastic place. Thank you for visiting these places to show the world how it really is. I love when people come to visit the city. This really is a world class city full of culture...it has the same problems as ANY other city, anywhere in the world...but there is just so much to love here
I'm British, live in Canada....I love Mexico, the culture, the people and of course the food!... There are bad places everywhere in the world...I have been to Mexico a few times infact some of the driving portions on this video look familiar... on the whole I have found Mexicans to be wonderful people.. I hope to retire in Mexico :D
I went there in 2016. I was with a friend, but we walked all over the place, including through all of those areas in the day and Garibaldi at night a couple times. We had just been in Guadalajara and walked around a bunch there, so everywhere we saw in MC looked a lot safer. Worst thing that happened in MC was getting pickpocketed by I assume was an fairly older woman... Loose baggy cargo shorts during rush hour traffic on the subway are a pretty obvious target, even if they do have zippers.

Mexico's city Bronx is Iztapalapa, specially the part around Guelatao, the worst neighborhood in Mexico city is "La paraiso" which is a 20 minutes walk from Guelatao metro station.
Every major city everywhere will have its' dangerous, ghetto, crime ridden places. Even beautiful Mexico City. I live in Orlando, Florida and there are many many areas here that many locals like myself don't dare go into, especially at night or late in the afternoon, that are dangerous and have lots of drugs and major major crime!!!
Tepito, back in the 80s some friends here in Querétaro invited me to go visit, maybe buy some fayuca and eat some good street food, tacos that were a foot long! Garibaldi I've only heard about in the msm, I guess its a bigger version of our extinct "Jardin de los Platitos" in favor of the modern plazuela Santa Cecilia and La Merced, my mom, may she rip, when she was young and single(in the 50s)went to Mexico City to find work, stayed there in the neighborhood of La Merced with some relatives and she was really amazed at La Merced, a big Mercado, doesn't compare with Mercado Hidalgo here! yes, theres great food and you can buy anything you can imagine in there just dont carry too much money, dont wear fancy things like watches or jewellery, go between 10am and 4pm is my advice and you should be just fine :)

I'm from mexico city and lived there for 27 years, I studied my high school in Cecyt 14 in colonia Morelos (next to Tepito), I can tell you that Tepito is not even close the most dangerous part of Mexico city. There are way worse areas in mexico city that are not very famous (some areas in iztapalapa, milpa alta, tlalpan, have worse crime statistics than tepito). Actually, in MY OPINION, Tepito area is not THAT BAD. I have good friends there.
If you think tepito is bad go to anahuac, or just go to iztapalapa, ciudad nezauatcoyotl, rojo Gómez, impulsora, Santo Domingo, santa Ursula, I bet you get in, but can’t get out..... tepito is over rated is bad but there are worst neighborhoods....

The United States is not shit compared to the parts he didn't go into in Mexico. You walk into some places in the city,and you do not come out alive or just with your tail between your legs🤷 I am from Nezahualcóyotl AND there is many reasons why I moved to the United States, besides the fact that here is Peaceful compared to where I lived in. I have visited "really dangerous parts" here in the US. But,here something happens and the cops are here before a fight or a shootout breaks. But in the city the cops get there almost an hour later to take the dead bodies for autopsies or do not even bother to go....
