- In Baseball Sim Auctions we take all the players from great historical teams and make all the players free agents, we use that pool of players to construct brand new teams via an auction. We can use any team in baseball history for a Sim Auction, but we typically use great teams or teams with great individual performances.
In today's auction we will highlight the best seasons in the careers of 5 recently elected Hall Of Famers - Dick Allen, Dave Parker, Todd Helton, Adrian Beltre and Joe Mauer. We will use the players from the 1972 White Sox, 1978 Pirates, 2000 Rockies, 2004 Dodgers and 2009 Twins.
Before we get started I would like to give you a brief preview of each of the teams in today’s auction.
The 1972 White Sox were 87-67 and finished 2nd in the AL East. Dick Allen had a superb season, leading the league in HR, OBP, slugging % and OPS on his way to the AL MVP award. On the pitching side, Wilbur Wood knuckle balled his way to a ridiculous 376 innings pitched.
Our next team is the 1978 Pirates who won 88 games and finished 2nd in the NL east. The offense was highlighted by MVP Dave Parker who led the league in OPS, total bases and WAR. On the pitching side, Hall oF Famer Bert Blyleven led the way with a 3.01 ERA in 243 innings.
The 2000 Rockies won 82 games behind a composite OPS of .845 and no pitching (finishing 26th out of 30 teams in ERA). The hitters were led by Todd’s Helston’s best season - he topped the league in most of the significant hitting categories, but most impressive was his .372 BA with a whopping OPS 0f .1162.
Next up is the 2004 Dodgers. This team finished 1st in the NL West, winning 93 games behind the best season in the areer of Adrian Beltre. Beltre led the league with 48 homers and finished 2nd in the MVP voting.
Our last team is the 2009 Twins who fished 1st in the AL central, featuring an MVP season from Hall Of Famer Joe Mauer. Mauer led the league in BA,OBP,SL and OPS. Mauer’s .365 BA that year is the highest in baseball history by a catcher in the modern era.
