Jewish Galilean Miracle Workers in the Life & Times of Jesus - The Mages of the Rabbinical World

  • Jesus of Nazareth is without any doubt the most famous of the miracle workers, Jewish or otherwise, of the Second Temple Period. However, because of the glare cast by Jesus and early Christianity, it’s easy to forget that such miracle-workers abounded in the ancient world generally and in the Jewish context more specifically. Several other specifically Galilean miracle-workers are known to us from both Jewish history and lore. In fact, they seem to have constituted a unique class of men capable of such miraculous feats, known as 'anshe ma’aseh' or “men of deeds.” In fact, Jesus’ Jewish contemporaries very likely would have understood him in something like this category. In collaboration with ‪@ReligionForBreakfast‬ in this explore I explore a few of these Galilean miracle-workers or anshe ma’aseh who lived just before and after the lifetime of Jesus of Nazareth. From Honi the circle-maker who could compel G-d to make it rain, to Hanina ben Dosa’s extreme piety accidentally inducing miracles and who forestalled the power of the Queen of Demons to Shimon bar Yochai, so pious that even the key commandments of the Torah didn’t apply to him and whose very gaze could incinerate those before him and from whom the secrets of the Kabbalah are said to flow, even an errant resurrection of the dead following fisticuffs at a Purim party.

I am an ordained Christian minister. Many Christians refuse to accept the obvious fact that Jesus was born a Jew, lived his life as a Jew, and died a Jew. He wanted to reform Judaism, not destroy it.
Christianity was founded and promoted by his followers, who were often the object of Jewish anger about the claims of Jesus being the Messiah, etc. All beliefs must be put into context.
Would there be Christianity today if it weren't for Paul [ aka Saul ] and Emperor Constantine?
No religion should be founded on the abilities of a very talented magician.
Christianity has three powerful aspects: Repentance, Redemption, and Rebirth. Ponder on those.

Great video, thank you! I once heard Bart Ehrman say that when he watched "The Life of Brian" (while still a fundamental Christian), what bothered him most was the scene where Brian starts preaching in the market square, and there's a dozen of men like him, all pronouncing various teachings and prophecies. Because this scene pokes fun at the fact that Jesus was by far not the only prophet and miracle-worker of his day, even though that is what most Christians simply assume today. But of course, most peope simply don't know much about the history of that time period in the Levant.

    • @calistafalcontail
      @calistafalcontail 4 місяці тому

I am christian and I learned very early, that in Jesus´s time, there were many people who CLAIMED to be prophets, who were mostly ignored because they were full of crap, but also not a threat to anybody in power. And yeah there were probably some magicians, who were able to actually do certain things too...like in every culture. But they lacked something Jesus had. Jesus was still the one who stood out and ruffled many feathers. Every priest and pastor I have talked to explained that many people were preaching at the market during this time. Its not a taboo or secret or whatever. To say the other men were just like him is a kinda weird. All the people who were transformed by just meeting Jesus, didnt seem to have the same experiences meeting all those other men and did not feel the need to put their life on the line to stand by their side.

Fascinating - it actually makes sense of this bible text "When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”" Matthew 11 - which suggests that doing such acts was not uncommon at the time. Further, walking on water was considered a miracle, but Jesus said his disciples lacked the faith to do so - which also implies others can do it if they believed - I wonder how that applies to getting more youtube views hehe :) - thank you for a great video

exactly i think the main point of difference between christ and the others is that many people were doing miracles, many jewish rabbis apparently as well! but he was the only one claiming to BE god. the rest are just doing it through god which would be how a regular person would do it. (side note i love the idea of a guy yelling at God to make it rain when he finally does it like nothing and he shows what that’s all you’ve got and then gives like a full torrential downpour is over revengeful now how are you? Can’t just just give a normal thing you have to be like a genie about it? And only that does give him a regular rain storm lmao)

They really like you up in Heaven, dude! Before I came down here they told me: 'Agrat, don't touch a HAIR on Hanina's head!'" And Hanina being like "AUCH! If they liked me so much up in Heaven they wouldn't let YOU run around wrecking up the Place! You make such WORK for me, you DRUNK!" and there's a crack of thunder, Agrat falling to her knees all "NO, Rabbi Hanina, PLEASE! Leave me SOMETHING this is my only joy in life!" And the rabbi shakes his head "Fine!" throws up his hands "Who am I to get in the way of Happiness?" nodding his head "the night of Shabbat, people should be in anyway" shoos her "Have it!" "Oh Thank You, Hani!" Scratching his head "aaaah, Wednesday's, too, you have a good heart, even if you're a trouble maker." "Youre a great man, Rabbi; A Great Man!" "Stop, Stop! I dont need the flattery; I give my poor wife enough trouble. Go on, you crazy kids!" and so, because it's Wednesday night, they continue on their bender "Thank you Hanina" Agrat waves "You'll always be my FAVORITE rabbi" Hanina waves back "Get a Job!" XD

There are 360 full moons in a night sky, times two makes 720, 360 is also divided into 12 30 degree segments giving us our metric of time and distance based on the Moon, hence why there are really 13 hours on a clock, which goes around twice in a 24 hour period. The Moon passes through the entire Zodiac every month, disappearing for 3 days before reappearing as the New Moon marking the start of the Month, with the full moon being on the 14th, 14 having just as many esoteric interpretations, such as Paschal, the Passover. Hence why Enoch lives 365 years, the number of days in an Egyptian year, and Methuselah 932, the number of days between Black Moons.
I also made some videos covering these discoveries on my channel, and I've recently found how this astrological calendar was expressed in ancient Megalithic sites 5500 years ago right through to DC and New York today.
The integer 1200 represents the sum of the years in India for a cosmic cycle. Now
      1200 x 201 = 241,200
      1200 x 380 = 456,000
      1200 x 360 = 432,000
These numbers correspond to the Sumerian tablet list of ten kings who ruled for a total of 456,00 years, a second tablet which lists only eight of these kings with a total of 241,200 years, and Berossos' list.
The Book of Genesis lists ten patriarchs from Adam to Noah and the Flood totalling 1656 years. In the Jewish calendar one year is 365 days. In 23 years plus 5 leap year days we have 8400 days or 1200 seven-day weeks. If we multiply 1200 x 72 we get 86,400 or the number of Jewish seven-day weeks in 1656 (23 x 72) years. Since the Babylonian calendar year was composed of 72 five-day weeks, then in 432,000 days there are 86,400 Babylonian five-day weeks. Then in 432,000 days there are 86,400 Babylonian five-day weeks (432,000/5). Thus the Bible concurs with the other lists as well.
The earth's axis wobble that causes the precession of the equinoxes is given as 25,920 years. Divided by the ancient number called "soss," 60, which was used in calculations, results in 432.
The Greek Ages also bear a close correspondence to the four Yugas of the Hindus: Krita-Yuga, Treta-Yuga, Dvapara-Yuga, and Kali-Yuga. Their method of calculation is described by Ullamudeian as follows:
"In each of the 12 signs there are 1800 minutes; multiply this number by 12 you have 21600; e.g. 1800 X 12=21600. Multiply this 21600 by 80 and it will give 1,728,000, which is the duration of the first age, called Krita-Yuga."
If the same number be multiplied by 60, it will give 1,296,000, the years of the second age, Treta-Yuga. The same number multiplied by 40 gives 864,000, the length of the third age, Dvapara-Yuga. The same multiplied by 20 gives 432,000, the fourth age, Kali-Yuga." (It will be noted that these multipliers decrease in inverse ratio to the Pythagorean tetractys: 1, 2, 3, and 4.)
The Essenes studied the Mysteries of Pythagoras.
His name means Heart (Bel) of the Serpent.
The cycle of the Phoenix encodes the astrological calendar by which they removed 3 days every 630 years. This was expressed in a Pythagorean Triangle of Dimensions 216 by 630 by 666.
6 x 6 x 6 is 216, there are 2160 years in an astrological age, and the Moon is 2160 miles in diameter. The solar metonic calendar using 60 6 day weeks produces 1 extra day every 216 years. There are also 216 Megalithic seconds in a day, and 216 letters in the name of God

Esoterically- Walking on Water , not a uncommon image, had to do with taking the Christ within oneself so that one can , in free will, be the designer of one's own fate. To carry this image of Christ into the beyond. I take much of the Bible as "in-between" the physical reality and the other spiritual - free from the senses. That can be called supernatural but on the other hand Archetype. The debate goes on in the realm of consciousness as to what it actually is.
Another thought on Jesus:is that he was the prepared body to receive the Christ . The same [CHRIST] as Julian the Apostates three fold Sun which I find interesting.
One wonders how much of the Gospels are "secret" transcriptions with a multilevel interpretation based on ones own self knowledge or as to how much of the Bible is partly historical and partly liminal , e.g. something to be read in the Astral light . Miracles are not really as important as the Cosmic event that seemingly changed the course of our cognition and is evolving.
A common thread is: That Christ will return in the Etheric | common to the Rosicrucian stream.
I think highly of your videos because they explore something inherent in mankind's quest via the word in the symbolism of Alchemy, hermeticism and magic.

stories tell of Jesus going to India, Learning the ancient Pali, identified as a God on Earth, then getting run out of town on his way back to the homeland. (for teaching the same things he did as accounted in the Bible)... seems to me if others had this knowledge (be it Pail, Eastern Anceint, Hermes, pre-flood) , I just discovered your wonderful intelligent channel, so if you talked about this before... I'm still catching up. thank you for your amazing work, passion, and approach.

Dr. Sledge, thanks for the deep dive into these mystical 'miracle' workers. It helps to put the life and times of Jesus into perspective. I have to wonder if the Hellenized Jews who wrote the N.T. gospels would have been familiar with the stories of these 'miracle workers' and purposefully crafted the story of Jesus with that in mind.
There are those who also think that the Greek speaking authors would have also known that to paint Jesus' life with a literary stroke to mimic things like the death of Heracles, the healings/resurrections done by Asclepius, and the ascension and apotheosis of Romulus would have made him more appealing to the Gentles (Dr. Dennis R. MacDonald, Dr. Richard Miller).
Have been enjoying the depth of your information and the respectful way it's present. Shalom!

Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan refers to it as perhaps a type of White Magic. If you go with his Meditative Kabbalah it’s likely two different methods that both induce the same altered state of consciousness through which one can accomplish supernatural feats

Feels worth mentioning that John does also have Jesus healing with mud: Jn 9:6, he rubs mud in the eyes of a blind man and has him go wash in the pool of Siloam. Now he doesn't need to give it two tries like he does in Mark admittedly.

This is so neat! My take away from this is that the miracle stories from the gospels are literally just Jewish folklore. Like if Jesus was Joshua from Białystok there would be stories about him making golems essentually.

Amazing collab! I never knew that Galilee in Jesus' time was a hotbed for "men of deeds" like himself. I'd heard of Honi before, but didn't know he was from Galilee. It's too bad that the Jesus movement/Christianity seems to have lost the humor that's present in the Jewish miracle-worker stories. Or maybe it got (deliberately?) lost in translation.

Our Heavenly Father can make anything possible. Faith is trusting in God durning hard times. Faith is what is getting me through my hard situation. I’m still struggling to providing for my two autistic children since losing my job over declining the vaccine. I declined due to my pre existing health condition (Lupus) and Heart disease. I was denied my medical/religious exemption from Forsyth Hospital. My husband passed away three years ago, so I’m all alone. Both of my sons are non verbal so things are more hard on me. Every month I don’t know how we are going to make it through. Every month is a struggle, a battle to not end up on the streets. I’m so depressed and embarrassed by my situation. I’ve been put down and mocked over my circumstances. Even was accused of lying simply because I post comments. Just more lies from the devil. I’m so ashamed and overwhelmed.
BUT because of my faith God shows up every month and provides. Even as I face homelessness with two young children. I know that God will provide abundantly.

@TheEsotericaChannel Of course, Christianity wouldn't be the same without him. That does make me question though; why would Paul choose Jesus' teaches to spread. By the way, I saw your video theorizing that Paul, possibly being a practitioner of Jewish mysticism, may have influenced his conversion to Christianity, very interesting and informative.
