The way you edited brought something very interesting into realization for me. It's how this early part of the episode shows two courting couples. But they are very different in how they interact based on the "overt romance"❤ of their relationship..
Here's John & Francesca, engaged (although not announced quite yet), sitting on seats ACROSS from each other!! And they're being barely supervised by the rest of her family near. 😄
Then there's Colin calling on Penelope, where when he sees how closely he's being watched, gets EVEN CLOSER all up on her.😂

I think some folks don't understand that Colin and Penelope have to follow a very different trajectory than all previous seasons because they ALREADY KNOW EACH OTHER. So the primary tension of them falling in love has already happened. It is simply a matter of breaking down the barriers. So another major source of tension must exist--and does, in the form of Lady Whistledown. Likewise, it seems to me this season is setting up future seasons rather a lot. Partly because this season is dealing with a couple already deeply in love and we know they are going to end up together, without any doubt.
