I had to check cuz I wasn't sure but soccerguy is right. They are smilies and they aren't a subset of metaphors. They're different. Usually you can tell it's a simile if the word "like" is used to compare two indirect things. How Greek says, "he's feeling himself like he's looking for his keys."
