@@soldiers23 Spot on. It amazing how people apply superlatives to people like Paice and Palmer, yet they drew so much from Buddy. I recently saw a Carl Palmer drum solo from the same era and it had many of the same Rich elements as this solo did. No offense to the original commenter, but this is more of a big band swing era drum solo than rock. Outside of the triplet rolls, it's almost all Buddy stuff. Which is great!!!
So fast on the snare. So fast on the bass. So fast on the kit. Yet so musical. Ian is my favorite drummer and together with the other 4 made history as possibly the greatest hard rock band of the genre.
He's excellent. And honor of the 53rd anniversary of their concerto for Groupon orchestra I of course watched and listened to the whole video today. His brief but exquisite drum solo from 1969 is in the third movement of the concert. He displays his lightning fast drumming. Amazing
Ian is perhaps one of the most underrated drummers of his time, and still is going strong with Deep Purple with nearly 60years to his credit, Rock On Paice..
@@drummer8422 NO.. it's not. Have you seen Buddy Rich do a one handed single snare drum roll? Ian on this video was doing something similar to Buddy. Ian Paice in drum videos in the early 2000's was doing a trick one handed snare roll...like your saying. But not in this video
Perfect tempo (pa(i)ce), endless energy, brutal force with control, perfect timing, awesome skills, breath taking technique, mindblowing composition - still an improvisation - nothing's missing! And all this during less than 6 minutes!!! I can't recall any other drummer capable of doing that. No doubt my number one favourite drum solo, and one of my absolute top favourite drummers! As a studio drummer in the 70's and 80' Ian was my number 1 Rock drummer, very clean, no mistakes and could turn a kit with one bass into a double bass sound using floor tom. Thanks to the bone radio station i had my chance to meet my instructor
And back in the day before double-bass pedals. Ian and Carl Palmer fastest single-bass kickers ever, followed closely by Bonzo... What a performance! Great post...
Look at the size of his drum kit. Ian Paice gets more sound out of that kit than other drummers get out of those monster kits ! That is why when I talk to others about the best rock drummers ever I always say Paice is # 1.
Ian Paice is one of THE best of the 1970's rock drummers for sure! (at least one of my most favorite, along with Carl Palmer, Keith Moon, Jon Bonham, Pierre van der Linden, Neil Peart, Barriemore Barlow, Bill Broford, Terry Bozzio, and everyone else I forgot to mention! 😅 ) Ian's solo here sounds a lot like Carl Palmer's solos, I'll assume they might have influenced/inspired each other and/or had the same core idols/influences like Buddy Rich etc.? 👌💖👍
No disrepect to John Bonham, he was a brilliant drummer. But Ian Paice took it to another level. One of the greatest drummers of his generation. Had the honour of meeting him once, a very modest man and a massively talented one.

ua-cam.com/video/rCJCiy3Vl6Y/v-deo.htmlsi=maP6Qazuh2DYjqCT : The drummer in purple is really brilliant, it can be seen that he is very strongly influenced by jazz music (swing, big band), this is also the reason for the magnificent technique he has. However, as much as I like him, there are still such jazz drummers who are on a different level. Look at this link of the Dutch drummer Jansen (1937-2008), I put it on purpose, because both of them are left-handed, I believe you will notice the difference.
The great Ian Pace that could be placed among the best either jazz or rock drummers of all time he sounded so technical as a jazz drummer and powerfull as any rock drummer amazing
