"Learning to let go of tension takes mental, not physical, effort. Once a muscle is tightened, the only way to release it is to allow it to release. You can't make the muscle release by using additional muscular effort." - Madeline Bruser. I wish I included this quote in the video, but I found it after I uploaded. It perfectly describes how to relax!
A great video. One thought I would add is that tension can often be purely psychological. I have noticed that if I find something to be difficult I will automatically tense up (sort of brace for impact). I’m working on training myself out of that habit but it isn’t easy :-)
Yes! You’re absolutely right. Many times it’s psychological and it’s not easy to fix! I feel like I can make a whole video on just the mental aspects of relaxation.
Thank you for this video! I’m actually suffering from tendinitis right now(but I’m slowly starting to recover over the past week by applying ice packs and taking hot baths) btw, I love your videography!
Ah thank you! The videography is another fun creative way for me to express myself. I'm sorry to hear about your tendinitis! I know how painful that can be. I hope you find a solution for it! Btw chow chows are one of my favorite dogs. I want one so bad.
Thank you so much for this. I think almost everyone who returns to piano after years away from it deals with the issue of tension. Not knowing how to be aware of and deal with it leads directly to injury, sometomes irreversible. You have saved a lot of pianists a long painful journey with this today. Thank you. Also check out Alexander technique and Feldenkrais methods for learning relaxation.
Yes!! I'm sure all of us who return to piano experience this and it can feel really hopeless when you don't know how to fix it. I hope this video can help those in that situation. Thanks for recommendations I'll check it out!
Hi Stanley, l loved these recommendations. I get so tense after 1h 1/2 practicing. I'll try these exercises every 45 min. Thanks! Keep your videos coming.
