We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

That spray works great for grasshoppers, even hardcore lubber grasshoppers as well. The garlic and hot pepper smell keeps them away, but also, because it contains dish soap, if you spray it in their faces, it will kill them.

IT WORKS!!!! I made this potion late in the summer so it was too late but this year I used the "aged" spray as soon as it got warm in May. It was really strong (practically knocked me over when I opened the bottle :) so I diluted it a bit. The white moths aren't even going near any of the beds where I sprayed - hallelujah! Thanks Stacy :)

Great potion! lol For those who dont know about using hot pepper in your bug spray, if you use any powdered cayenne, etc, from the store, it Will clog your sprayer. You should chop fresh hot pepper, not too small, & use it that way if you dont want to waste your sprayer. -THX for the recipe!

YES!! Thank you so much! We are super new to the homesteading/gardening world, and needless to say, I have no idea what i'm doing. We have received a calling from the Lord to be more self sufficient, and we are doing our best to follow. However, the gardening part is not coming natural to me. My jalapenos and bell pepper plants, underneath are covered in a whole bunch of little white eggs. EVERYONE recommended Seven dust, but I just didn't feel right about it. I looked for a little bit, couldn't find a homemade spray I felt good about, and caved to the Seven dust. I didn't use it (just bought it this morning), still didn't feel right about it, and just sat down to quilt and watch our videos. Low and behold, this video pops up! Thank you so much, I am definitely going to pick up some Dr. Bronner's soap soon.

Always use Dr Bronner's on my plants, didn't know about the rest for a spray. It's similar to what my mom makes to keep deer away, with eggs added, let them rot, then pour mixture along edge of yard. Will deter other animals that eat your plants too.

I have been making a bug spray using rhubarb leaves for a bug spray on my plants but I won't use it on anything where I am going to eat the leaves because rhubarb leaves are toxic to humans. (funny thing is, I also add Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap to mine - haha) Your recipe is much better as there is no fear of toxicity so I can make it and use it on my kale! Thank you!

Love this!!! I seen one of those sneaky little turds the other day. Unfortunately for him he was dispatched by my dog! Hehe I actually made a spray similar to this for a squirrel with a death wish! That turd I caught digging up my turnips and then my carrots! I grow the turnips more for the greens and was finally able to have space for them this year. I mixed a few drops of soap, garlic, cayenne pepper, clove oil, cinnamon oil and lemon grass oil. No sign of him since! I’m gonna make yours for that doggone butterfly! TFS

Sandy Oklahomatransient I put neem oil in warm water, with a little dish soap to help emulsify it. I use about 1 tsp neem oil to 1 qt water. A few drops of ivory liquid. Only make as much as you're going to use up though, bc it smells awful if it sits. Best thing ever for flea beetles that were decimating my eggplants!

I would recommend using some sort of finer mesh strainer, like a few layers of cheese cloth. If you don't, you stand a good chance of clogging your sprayer. It doesn't take much to clog one. When I was still living at home, shortly after college, I planted a bunch of tomato plants in our garden and I read about the garlic spray bug repellent. I made a batch and periodically sprayed the plants. I was very impressed with the results to say the least. Those plants stayed completely bug free all summer long. This stuff does indeed work very well. It is not necessary to use man-made chemicals to repel bugs.

Hi Stacy, I am making the Shrub, and don't have chicken. So I was thinking maybe the fruits, it will taste good on bread. I have no clue yet, but before you throw your fruits to the chicken, I thought maybe you want to try it too? It would be like a kind of marmelade, jam. If it is no good, I will have to throw it away. So I want to see or it would be good to use elsewhere, if the lemonade is good, the fruit should taste nice too. Just a thought. :D Thank you for everything! I've used a similar recipe to help ward off bugs in my potted garden, but found it didn't work so well. I've since moved to a large property and we're in the process of expanding our veggie garden beds. I was happy to find you here on UA-cam and went right to it to make and try your spray. However, with several tries to rid my garden of cabbage moth I found that this didn't work. In fact, just moments after spraying I caught several cabbage moths on my brussel sprouts. I've tried it over and over, but it's a definite fail for me.

Watch your eyes, too. And don't spray this on a windy day. I tried this before ... it WORKS. Thanks for sharing :-D

I am going to mix up a batch to take to the new homestead and let those bugs know we are there LoL They all have free run of the place till the end of June. I am sure the wild turkeys have kept the place pretty picked. I luv the way nature takes care of it's self and all of us who compliment her. Aloha Kim

Awesome recipe! Thank you. I'll bet it will be good for keeping rabbits and mice out of the garden too. I'm definitely going to try this. -All the best. ~ Theresa
