Art school can be a great way to level up your skills, network, and launch your career, but it's equally as valid to take a different path and still be successful! I hope our experiences and insights graduating from public universities and still learning a lot helps to inform you if you are deciding to pursue a higher education in the arts.

Hey!! I’m a junior in high school and I want to pursue a higher education in the arts, specifically visual arts and graphic design! I have a quick question: for graphic design, would it be a good idea to take an AP computer science class my senior year so that I’m familiar with computers and stuff? I’m sorry for the random question lol but I feel that this would be a good place to ask! :)

exactly!! I struggled with that so much (and honestly still do) but it's worth to yourself and your art to ask for help or get as much feedback as possible!! and after you do it a couple times it gets a lot easier!

As someone who goes to an art college outside of networking the main selling points are
1.) whole ciriculum caters to art so even non art focused classes find ways to tie it back into art (history classes are art history, no math class, science classes are science of color ect.)
2.) resources for example my school has a huge library of art books, comics and offers student use of a riso printer, art studios, light boxes, various paper cutters, and all computers have all adobe programs downloaded and students are given free access to them ect.
3.) more niche classes, when all classes cater to art they can afford to have more niche specific art based electives bc they don’t have to have other subjects to take up class listing.
For example at my school you can take such classes as
    - a printing (using riso printer) and zine making class
    - history of animation or history of comics classes
    - various political classes revolving around art and politics (art and lgbtq+ classes, or art and feminism for example)
    - classes where we literally just go to museums and draw
    - an elective on toy making
    Etc ect.
    And
4.). Big names, many art schools have famous people teaching at them as art alone can not pay the bills so your fav artists probably seek out teaching at art specific schools as side work, for example one of my professors very talented man, mentioned he worked on code names kids next store back in the day. Well this may seem like having a teacher like this is only more useful for networking, it’s also useful because it allows you to have teacher will a wider more diverse portfolio on their backs, meaning they can teach you more stuff your art will benefit from. (Which shows bc some of my teachers who didn’t work on any large famous projects at my school have actively taught me less, than my teacher who worked on kids next door, cus he had more valuable experience under his belt to provide to us my art has benefited from)
Granted all this cost more money and I 100% agree with your message of getting the art education you can afford coming first. 😊

Honestly you mentioning art school has definitely helped me have a idea what it’s like and tbh I’m very grateful, that I chose to not go because it seems overwhelming and plus I self taught my self how to draw for so many years that I now get asked if ill ever go to art school and study which my answer always ends being no because I do have family who are also artists who I sometimes or rarely ask for help with but I mostly use books or the internet to teach me because of all our different art styles so I guess for me there isn’t really a need for me to go unless if they did have a business program for me to learn from or to study.

for me, i personally love my art college because of the teachers and the classes that are structured around the majors you're in. literally the only issue i have about my art college is the administration, they make the college experience much more stressful. sadly, we can't really do anything about it :/ but otherwise that issue, its great for me personally i've made a lot of friends that helped me get through my struggles with art

Art School is okay if you have time and you can afford it ( like i don't know how expensive it is in the US, but it's not worth getting 10 years worth of debts over ) but it's NOT necessary. The only Art Schools that are worth it because the Teachers are industry-specialists with a lot of connexions are probably really expensive and not necessarily in your Country.
With social medias nowadays, there are enough Art groups out there where you can post your stuff and receive feedback and corrections from even professionals, there are fantastic channels on youtube to follow and many industry-profesionnals offering online courses. I think Art Schools are becoming seriously overrated, and should up their Game if they don't want to become a thing of the past.
I went to an Art School and we had a few good Teachers, but i feel like i mostly wasted my time by going over things i had already learned by myself, and it didn't lend me a job in the Art industry afterwards, so i can't say i'd recommend it.

this was such a good conversation to listen to! the thought of only being able to pursue something as a career if you have a degree is so antiquated with the world we live in nowadays, there are a lot of resources all around the internet and many cheaper options to learn about art (or about anything really, doesn't need to be just art).

Honestly, with my running out of time before I have to choose a college or university (my country's school system doesn't really care for art much) I'm just scared, the thing I'm only really good at is art and the expectations of family are terrifying to me. especially with the way getting a job today seems almost impossible? these videos give me a look into both good and bad but damn the bad sides feed into my fears for my future. its crazy at this point

    • @sketchesofshay

i just want to tell you, whatever choice you make, there is no rush to completely figure everything out. I really felt the same way when I was graduating. If you are able to get scholarships and get school paid for you, then college really may help you figure what you want to do and explore with your career. There is no shame in going to a community college and getting a non-art degree for stability reasons. There are so many artists who do this and are successful without getting an art degree. And there are so many great online, cheaper art courses directly from professionals that you can take alongside your degree. Here is a great video of resources that could help you! ua-cam.com/video/EnKLvuKVlgQ/v-deo.htmlsi=zHpup45LSXvYZVfa I am wishing you the best in whatever you decide, you got this, there are no wrong choices, just different paths

Being someone who only wants to do creative based careers, I want to go to art school or a school with art programs that I can do. I only have the two choices which is VCU and MICA (qualified for a big scholarship from them). I have no problem going to a public school with art programs because that means that I'll have more things to try outside of art, but I also have no problem going to an art school that will better my education in the arts. I'm applying next month so I hope I can get accepted because I have no choice, but to go to college.

The part where you talked about there being no specific timeline for learning and becoming an artist really stuck out to me. I’m going to be a senior in high school next year and I went into high school thinking that I was going to take art all 4 years. My freshman year was the first year back at school in-person after the pandemic and I struggled in all my classes that year, art especially. I ended the year with a D in art because I was always behind on work and couldn’t catch up, I felt terrible and I was too ashamed to try and continue with art the next year. My mental health has improved so much since then, but now that I haven’t taken any art classes since my freshman year (I still draw as a hobby), I have been feeling a bit depressed, feeling like I should’ve continued with art back then. I saw so many beautiful pieces that art students at my school have made in the past year and I felt like I couldn’t catch up. I’ve been more motivated recently to continue drawing and watching your videos ,and this one specifically, has helped me feel so much better. I think I’m going to try emailing my school’s art teacher and ask if I can continue with art next year, thank you for motivating me to keep learning :).

Shay you are my favourite artists and never fail to inspire me. I was wondering if you could give me some advice? I really like sketching and creating art pieces but whenever I want to paint something I just am too scared of failing so I don't end up putting paint to canvas.

    • @sketchesofshay
      @sketchesofshay  9 місяців тому +2

That really means a lot to me!! As for the painting advice, since it seems you really like sketching, I would say to use that to your advantage!! Plan something out, make a ton of sketches. Make a cleaner sketch, and then match to fit the size your painting at (I use a grid method) and transfer to your canvas. Do some color thumbnails as well, find a palette you like. I’d also recommend to do a little sketchy painting to make things a little less scary and to give yourself more information to go off of when you paint on actual canvas. And once you finally have this prep work, I’d recommend choosing a color from the palette that you have already chosen, and then use it as a base layer ! This gets rid of the pure white canvas and makes it much more approachable. It takes time and practice getting used to painting on canvas but I know you got this! I struggled with the same thing and I always found that planning really helps 💖
