Nick isn’t even poor lol he comes from an especially wealthy midwestern family and he went to Yale (New Haven) with Tom. It’s just that because of the midwestern values instilled in him, he chose to make most of his earnings on his own rather than rely on his parents forever (although the first year he is supported by his family financially). He CHOOSES to live in the old rundown shack for $80 a month or wtv because that’s what a hard worker does: they don’t sit idly by partaking in leisure activities in a mansion, they go out and earn their living. Obviously, Nick has a huge advantage over someone like Gatsby or Myrtle who have to/had to earn their money from nothing, but it’s still admirable of Nick.

Daisy was not the person calling at the end of the film! It was clearly reveiled to be Nick calling Gatsby's line from Wall street while he was at work that day. It's an interesting twist because Gatsby's last ever thought was that Daisy had finally called him, when in fact she never did! It was Nick!
Yupp. He died hoping that Daisy chose him while as viewers (and readers) we know that Daisy has already made the choice of staying with her husband. Gatsby failed to understand that for all his wealth, love, devotion and self-sacrifice he had very little in common with Daisy and the woman he loved either never truly existed or it is long gone at any rate.

I have no doubt that every man in the world has the potential to be a gay, especially hot guys.
Gatsby is a very hopeful person, every party he made and every time he looked at the green light he was hopeful that daisy would come to him one day, and what I loved as well was that when he died from the shot he was "hopeful" that it was daisy.
But what really saddened me was that instead it was Nick, the only one that actually cared, we find out that daisy did love Gatsby but was too much of a coward to care.
I'm quite angry though that nick is SO OVERLOOKED he is like the gem of the movie except the story isn't really about him he is behind the scenes seeing what's happening writing the biography about it in his head.
I really really REALLY LOVE the way this movie feels like a dream, while watching the movie to me I was trying to figure out what was happening but at the same time I knew what was happening, the film had a feeling of it being too good to be true if that makes sence, the backgrounds, the clothes, the camera views and even the language they spoken. This to me is a very well made movie that stands out with the book, btw the cover of the book is fabulous

I meant it definitely wasn't surprising that it was Nick calling instead of Daisy - it was obvious from the start that Daisy's a shallow, selfish, impatient character who didn't really love Gatsby

Who is this Tobey McGuire guy? I only know Tobey Maguire.
Quick note: they don't seem to explain or allude to it much in the movie, but Nick actually grew up fairly well off, in terms of other families. He was also Daisy's cousin, which probably helped with finances (not to mention his obviously strong friendship with Gatsby, even if it were just to meet Daisy again.)
I know this is supposed to be funny, but majority of the “issues” of the movie are part of the book’s plot.
Source material doesn't matter. If you don't fix holes in the plot from book to movie you're doing something wrong

The call wasn't from Daisy, but Nick. That's why the sence is so sad, he died happy thinking Dasiy loved him...when it was just Nick. In the end Nick was the only one that loved him, his only real friend. I also don't feel you completely understand Great Gatsby and that why you "sined" some parts.
Well that's the point of CinemaSins, some of the sins are pretty shallow, it's meant to poke fun at the movie, not dissect its true meanings.

@@TimTE01 Well, what Pug Lover said about that scene is true, but the movie might deserves some sins for making it too complicated as well as any confusing scene where a director tries too hard to be clever that the message becomes unclear. Communication is a two man job.

Even though it's sad, that after all Jay did just to be with his true love, I was kinda happy that he didn't end up with that sad and miserable Daisy.

Y'know what? Me too. Give me some Nick x Gatsby fanfics. I'm sure that romance would be better than the one between Gatsby and Daisy. At least a romance between Nick and Gatsby wouldn't involve infidelity and Nick wouldn't be too cowardly to admit his love for Gatsby. Hell, Nick loves Gatsby so much that he wrote a whole book about his time with him and didn't even attempt to hide the gay undertones.

Years ago my teacher confirmed that Nick was in love with Gatsby and it makes sense. He supports the affair with Daisy because he's living vicariously through her.

I love how this is not a typical CinemaSins stale and cynical narration. The excitement in his voice when he is talking about the pillows is pure gold.

I know it had some problems, but what I liked most about the movie was that it was almost perfectly accurate to the book, complete with directly quoted dialogue and narration. It’s so rare to find those kinds of movies
not nearly perfectly accurate to the book, but i love that they stocked close and pulled lines of dialogue, an amazing and fun book deserves it

The sins were fair but this is the type of movie that gives me a magical feeling with the scenery and soundtrack so anything wrong with this movie is highly overlooked

He interpreted the way jazz music felt to people of the 1920s and felt that it was similar to how we in present day view rap music. He was trying to convey a message, which is one that most people did not catch on to.

The book is more of a satire and political allegory than a tragic romance. All the Gatsby movies down through the years have gotten this wrong. This Gatsby actually comes closest to the larger points of the book, but that's not saying much. The book is well worth the read.

the yelling scene is important because it indicated Gatsby's status. A gentleman will never lose his temper, even at the worst times. However, Gatsby went haywire after being pushed, showing Daisy that he is only a commoner, and despite his money, will never be a noble. Daisy was only in love with Gatsby because he was everything she dreamed he was: noble, handsome, in love with her. But when the charade faded, she came to, and realized the truth. That's why she left.

Daisy was a complex, conflicted character. Right before she even married Tom, she received a letter from Gatsby that he was alive and coming for her, so she tried her very hardest to get out of the wedding and find him, but her mother forced her to marry Tom. When she explains to Nick that she wants her daughter to be a ""beautiful little fool" she's explaining how she wishes she didn't know about all of Tom's infidelities, and regrets marrying him. However, she can't just up and leave because she has to think of her daughter. And she can't just take her 2-5 year old and go live with Gatsby with her because that can be detrimental on a young child's mental health. Tbh, hated Myrtle more, but who wouldn't? Tom and Myrtle were ultimately the worst characters, especially since they work as a duo. This story is not meant to have a happy ending. It's not really a Romeo and Juliet, but can be compared to it. I just think Daisy needs a more specific analysis than just "thot", which is more Myrtle's title.

And most of her realizations come crashing down on her in the shirt throwing scene. She didn't even say "I don't love you anymore" herself to Tom. She was repeating Gatsby, who was urging her to say it so that he can continue his life with Daisy like he dreamed. Since The Great Gatsby revolves around this time period and uses it as a plot device for setting, you can understand the reasons for marriage. People still married for money. And since Gatsby was part of the "new money" crowd, it's conflicting to be with him because more people understood the old money. I'm mostly just repeating my English teacher at this point, but of you really analyze the story and understand the values of the time period, it all becomes much clearer.

In the book it takes like 2 chapters for Gatsby to make a real appearance. He makes a VERY SMALL appearance in Chapter 1 where Nick sees him for a split second then Gatsby just vanishes
F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote one of the most beautiful passages I've ever read:
"Sleep - real sleep, the dear, the cherished one, the lullaby. So deep and warm the bed and the pillow enfolding me, letting me sink into peace, nothingness - my dreams now, after the catharsis of the dark hours, are of young and lovely people doing young, lovely things, the girls I once knew, with big brown eyes, real yellow hair.

Based on the book, there is a theory that Nick is gay. Because when he's drunk he briefly mentions a naked guy in his bed. Nothing to do with the video, just something that I thought was interesting.
Also, you know, the entire book in which he’s obsessed with Gatsby.
Being gay isn't even a little bit interesting.

Oh I almost forgot about that! The elevator metaphor used with that is so incredibly detailed with the handle thing and then using the euphemisms to convey this idea. Magnificent.

I don't know if CinemaSins has done the Leo DiCapprio version of "Romeo and Juliet", but then again every single shot in that movie is a sin.
I didn't mind this film. The vintage take on the opening logos was a nice touch and the techno-style music along with Gatsby's supercharged car gave the movie a dieselpunk feel. I don't think many people actually understood the artistic statement being made in those small details.

Last year, this book made up a major portion of my AP class test. I didn’t read it, but I watched this video, and passed with a B.
1:08 Leo explained it. Adding hip hop to this movie was a key to let the viewers relate and feel closer to the film. I think it was a great idea, I really enjoyed it. In my opinion it suits the movie well.
I wasn't crazy about the music, it seemed artificial. But then again Gatsby's world is artificial so perhaps that was the point.
As a lover of jazz music, I hated it at first, but I also understood why they chose to do it. Making a film relatable to the audience is always important, and music was a huge part of what made the 1920s so "roaring." For people born 70-80 years later, Aaron Copeland and foxtrot just aren't "roaring dance music."

Fair but the narration is actually really important to understanding nick as a character and a fundamental part of understanding the book and the story. the film missed out a lot of Nick being overly judgemental as well which was also important in the book as he stated at the start that he was basically not judgmental and totally honest
It's obvious that you weren't looking at the underlining themes. Reading then watching this in class while having discussions GREATLY changes how you view it. Everyone in my class absolutely loved this book and the movie. You're missing out if you hate on this story. The reason why the scenes and dialogue is so choppy is because of the book. That was just the writing style of the time lol.

I dont think Gatsby was gay for nick, maybe bi but he loved daisy. Nick is hinted to be gay. He wakes up in some guys couch/bed (I dont remember) at one point and theres that elevator scene with that photographer guy.
@George Corbul I read the book in 10th so the couch thing might not be accurate. But i do think the author was trying to say something in that scene. Yes people act silly when drunk but this is a book, and I feel like there was a reason the author included that scene and all that phallic imagery. Either way we cant be sure but personally that's what I got out of that scene. I think it adds a bit to his relationship with gatsby too. Or maybe I'm overanalyzing. They didnt include it in the movie so maybe it was not important after all.

They didn’t include a lot of details in the movie that were conducive to Nick’s character development. The phallic imagery is not as important as the fact he was in Mr. McKee’s room as he showed him his portfolio in his underwear then he wakes up in a train station. They were heavily implied to have slept together. Also, the book itself is extremely short so it’s worth noting that that whole scene wouldn’t have been in there for nothing. This better develops Nick’s role as an unreliable narrator as not only was he dedicated to Gatsby platonically, there was a level of unrequited love that he played off. As Tom says near the end of the book, he threw dust in Nick’s eyes just as he did Daisy’s. He used Nick’s unrelenting devotion to him to his advantage in order to fulfill his romantic idea of what his life was destined to be.

I love this movie, idc what anyone says. I know how to appreciate the art style the director was going for, the symbolism, and the music I think was great. The party scene is absolutely spectacular. Also Leonardo DiCaprio is my favorite actor and Tobey is one of my favorites (Mainly because of Spider-Man) so that just makes the movie even better.
