I have an older version Moken 10 and Moken 12.5. I am a fan of both these boats, but my husband and I made the choice to buy two new version Moken 12.5‘s instead the 10 or a Lure. Here’s why. I am a paddler. I come from an open canoe background and I love how the 12.5 handles. I also love the speed of the 12.5 vs the Moken 10 or the Lure 10, 11.5- haven’t tried the 13. It’s 799, and you get a sonar pod, and adjustable seat. I don’t know if I will ever use the sonar pod, but it’s there if I needed, and it has that much needed improvement on the seat. Honestly, that’s the only flaw I can admit in my Moken 12.5. The boat is meant to stand in, but when you’re not a kid anymore, it’s not easiest thing in the world when you’re trying to fish. But that new seat has got to help a lot. And they kept the same hull, so I’m assuming it is going to paddle the same- which is like a DREAM. And again, I’m not trying to knock the 10. It’s a great boat as well, but if you’re going kayaking with someone who has a longer boat, or a hull that’s going to give you more speed, you’re gonna find yourself lagging behind. I went out with my husband with my Moken 10, and his big fish, and it was very hard for me to keep up with him. The 12.5 is sleek, it’s fairly fast, and I had absolutely no trouble with it in the wind even without a rudder. It’s just got to be One of the best boats on the market for the price. Spent a couple hundred more dollars and get a much better paddling boat. It’s going to beat the more expensive Lure hands down as well as far as paddling. I love the 12.5. The only thing is I can take my 10 and place it on the top of my car by myself. That 12.5 is just a little more than I can handle being a woman. But if I use the trailer, it would be no problem.

👍 I'm gonna have to make a 1.5 hr trip to the Nashville area, come better weather, and see the Moken 10 in person. Time for my 13 yr old grandson to upgrade from his Pelican Apex100, and get into something with more features and stability, and the rudder option on the Moken 10 fits the need, and the overall price is really decent. My Lure 11.5 is going into it's 4th season come June. 👍

Got rid of my 12' 3 kayak to get something lighter and more compact but could still pack all my gear and stand up in. The only draw back to the moken 10 is the noise it makes paddling through the water but only when there's a alittle chop. it tracks surprisingly well for a 10 ft and i have no problem standing up and fishing. Removing the center counsel and making the whole deck open would of been nice. its really not necessary unless your putting a transducer in, which the Lure 10 was made for. Everything else about the kayak is great. My old kayak had the feel free seat and i can say i like the feel of the moken better, it supports the back better. Wheel in the keel is a god send. after hauling around a 120 pound kayak i don't think i could ever buy another kayak without one. There was no other kayak out there for the price with all the options i wanted in a fishing kayak, feel free killed it with moken.

Love your videos and the knowledge you share so freely. I have been watching most of your videos regarding FeelFree, Crescent and Bonafide. Those are the 3 manufacturers I have narrowed down to. My model short list has the Bonafide SS107, Crescent LiteTackle and FeelFree Lure 10 V2. I am new to kayaking and will be out on larger lakes with boat traffic as well as smaller rivers with some currents but nothing classified as rapids. I am 60 yrs old and have C5,6&7 fused so overall weight (for car top loading), stability (avid fly fisher) and capacity ( I stay around 200#s @ 5'-11") are my determining criteria.
From these 3 boats would any be "the one" you would recommend?
Your reviews are great but you to "talk me into" every boat you like lol!
Any input would be great and thanks again for sharing your knowledge as I am sure you are helping many more people than you might hear from.

Hello Dan, I would be very interested in your thoughts on the Moken 10 V2 vs the Vibe Yellowfin? Living on the North Shore of Massachusetts I paddle mostly rivers. I'd like to upgrade to a sit on top to accommodate my 35 lb dog. Been waiting on local inventory on a Moken 10 V2 or Yellowfin 120. Only thing readily available is the Yellowfin 100. I'm 5'7 around 200. Currently paddling an old 12' dagger sit inside.

Hey Dan thanks for all the content. Love watching your videos they have really helped me get into the sport. With that said I think your specs maybe off a bit. Feel free says the Moken is rated for 440lbs. Which makes the comparison way closer in my opinion. Again thanks for what you do.

    • @HeadwatersKayak
      @HeadwatersKayak  3 роки тому

Yes but their weight limited are also way out of touch with reality. I’ve put lots of people in boats and anything close to 300 in a Moken and the paddler is going to feel tippy and probably capsize. 275 is realistic Max paddler weight. Some exceptions are out there, because not everyone is the same, but for the most past its not for big folks.

(Hoodoo 100s) and some vibe kayaks. Do i need the plugs to use those? I've used a Jackson staxx before and splash water all over me and it drains right out. Just want to know of those are the same

so I'm in the market to buy my 3rd kayak- pretty sure I want to go with the ff moken 12.5-use for bay and some lake fishing. I have a bad back and just curious to know your opinion on the 10 ft. boat. don't really have to paddle that far to get fishing (1/4) mile lets say, will the 10 be easier than the 12.5? bay may get 1-2 ft. swell at times with boats going by is it going to flip me out? in a shorter yak or would the 12 be more stable- and is the ff lures seat really worth the extra $$$$- love your reviews and the detail to the whole boat pros & cons your advice would be greatly appreciated. keep up the good work. thanks

This looks like one of the best good, inexpensive fishing yaks for small water yet! I'm in Michigan so I've got a few months to thaw out. However, I have been kicking around the idea of picking up a Vibe Yellowfin 100 but it seems this miht be better in price, quality and options? Maybe Vibe ups their game but all the rage seems to be with the Shearwater right now (whether great or average)? Any chance we could see a comparison between the Moken 10 V2 and Yellowfin 100? I'm also considering the Pelican Catch 100 as I can pick those up locally for $525. If I hate it I'll give it to my kids but any thoughts on comparing all three? I also just saw Jackson has stuck a peddle drive in their fairly new Bite (wonder when Dan might test that model)? That's too rich for me but interesting...

one year later and $100 more expensive...at least MSRP. But honestly, the Moken 10 v2 is one of the few 10 footers I've found on the market with a decent max weight capacity....especially if you are looking for something and want to keep 100 lbs below max capacity while on the water. Plus it weighs less than 70 lbs. Now, if only I had a place to put it :(

I have a question. I am not much into fishing. We just bought two kayaks from Walmart for my daughter and her fiance who is going to get married soon. I could borrow one of those for the time being but they have no protection upfront. Under the water that is. The areas that I fish up here in Northwest Washington State is the bogachiel river the HOH River and the Sol Duc River. I don't think I can fit a kayak in the Dungeness. unless it's over full. So if I buy a fishing kayak for a river that has Ice Cold Mountain water coming down. It needs to be inexpensive because that's all I fish. I go like three times a year. So do you have any advice? I still haven't seen all the brands out there. Is there an off brand that will work for me like 10 times a year at the most. All the rest of the times it'll be in a lake for fun.

I have a boat myself. But have been interested in getting one of these for lakes or creeks ect. I even saw a video of someone fishing in the ocean on one of these. Now that really sparked my interest. My thing is I would want to be able to paddle with my legs. And have room to really fish. With a fish finder. I dont not know much about my options. Any advice?

Do you guys sell rod tip protectors individually to be able to add on to a boat like the moken 10 or a paddle bungee

How do these compare to the Pescador 120? Bought one last year only thing I don’t like about it is the rod holders. But then again I’m new to the game. Way better than my son Dolphin that’s for sure.

Was hoping to see an on water review of the Standard, its not featured much on youtube. I did just order two of them but it was only because I like the open bow rather than a hatch.

I guess Covid demand has driven the price up...a lot. This model has gone up from $599 to a current price on the Feel Free web site of $714. Still seems like a great boat for the money....

You are lucky in the US, here in Europe, prices are double of that: nothing less than 1600€ for the german model.

Maybe a noob comment to make, but I saw your 2019 video of best beginner kayaks and was wanting to find something that's a bit of an upgrade! I have had the pelican trailblazer 100NXT for approximately 2 years, and I love it! I am hoping to find something that is a bit of an upgrade that I can go up and down the river (moving, with spots of minor white water that I sometimes have to get out and walk it) with (and maybe do some light fishing). Thoughts?

@@bobseaver7807 the sky is the limit! I would prefer a sit-in under $900 if possible. And I LOVE how well my current kayak glides through the water!
