Nvidia Thinks They're "Selling Out" of RTX 4080's?!

  • So Nvidia just had their Earnings call for the latest quarter, and of course, I’m here to cover it, so let's get to it, on your boot sequence.
Alright, the earnings call, how was it? Boring would be the first thing to come to mind, but I sat through it so you didn't have to! So, First, Nvidia touched on the fact that they “Unveiled the GeForce RTX™ 40 Series for laptops, providing the company’s largest-ever generational leap in performance and power efficiency.”...That’s not true.
I mean, maybe it's kind of true when it comes to the RTX 4080 mobile, Jarrod’s tech did an excellent review of it and it turns out that the cost per frame is SLIGHTLY better than a 3080 ti laptop gpu, but I mean the 3080 ti came out over a year ago, and we’re only seeing around 7% better cost per frame.
And when you look at the more affordable models, like the RTX 4070 mobile, Jarrod says that it's a literal joke, and hardwareunboxed literally canceled their coverage about it. It’s basically a 3070 ti. But hey, at least you get fake frames.
Speaking of which, they once again said that DLSS 3 would come to 50 games and apps. I hope for them that that’s true since they dont have the best track record when it comes to honoring those promises.

Nvidia doesn't really care about the low margin consumer market right now because they need to gear up production of the H100 to take advantage of the AI revolution. Unlike last generation where the 3090 and A100 where on two different lines (Samsung 8+ and TSMC 7 respectively) the 4090 and H100 are using the same TSMC 4+ node and the purpose of the 4090 was to perfect production and increase yields and from here on out will be mainly for chips that can't quite cut it for the H100. an 8 chip H100 board goes for $33,000 - $38,000 while 8 4090s go for $12,800 so if yields are high and they seem to be they aren't going to waste any H100 quality chips on a 4090 and if they do make a 4090 Ti then it's going to have to cost twice as much as a 4090 or they'll be leaving a lot of money on the table ..... And they aren't going to waste production time at TSMC on 4080's unless they can sell them for a high margin because again they would be leaving money on the table compared to using that production time for the H100. That is why Nvidia's stock price has almost doubled since October and AMD only saw a 30% gain (mostly due to their Epyc CPU line also having a higher demand because of AI) and Intel has been flat
There is more to the GPU markets these days than just gaming ... Go read the Nvidia article on Venture Beat to get a clearer understanding of why Nvidia's business is going to be booming this year despite a depressed Consumer PC market

Not more than that but no, Nvidia has something in mind which is, they know that they won't be able to deliver the quantity in demand, hence they already overpriced it knowing that somewhere in the near future when gamers aren't going to find any more RTX 30 GPUs, they have to switch to RTX 40.
