    Great job with your custom shelving idea, Tim!
    For my movie/media collection, I bought four tall IKEA Billy bookshelves and even extra Billy shelves to house my DVD's, Blu-rays, 4K's, and some of my movie-related collectibles because Billy bookshelves at that time were relatively cheap, but when COVID hit all of us, the cost of lumber increased by about 30% to 50% which also affected the current costs of wooden or medium density fiberboard shelving.
    Therefore, any economic ideas out there that help media collectors save money is a welcome suggestion and you've shown that your garage shelving idea works perfectly in any living room or media room. :)

      Same here. I didn't know they would sell just a extra shelf. I need one. Thanks

      We did the Billy bookcases as well especially in our book room. They are super economical for what they hold.

    • @TorontoJon
      @TorontoJon 7 місяців тому +1

      @@alandeniston9229, yes, aside from extra wooden Billy shelves for a bookcase, one can also buy glass shelving for a different look.
      One can also buy extra Billy extension units to put on top of one's existing Billy bookcases if one has the extra height available, so there are quite a few shelving choices for Billy bookcases. :)

    • @TorontoJon
      @TorontoJon 7 місяців тому

      @@timtalkstalkies, yes, Billy bookcases are still an excellent value and are very substantially built, so they don't feel cheap or like they'll fall apart. They're built to last.

    Those are great, the best deal I've gotten was a pair of Atlantic shelves from a garage sale for $10 each. I recently moved a pair of Prepac shelves a few feet and had to unload them first, a thousand Blu-rays easily surpasses 100 pounds.

    Nice video!
    To new collectors, I would just say: when you run out of shelf space, it doesn't have to be a choice between throwing stuff out or buying fancy shelves to display it all.
    I recommend putting the discs themselves in a binder or some other organizer, putting most of the empty cases in a closet, and displaying only the best and coolest cases/boxes.

    • @timtalkstalkies
      @timtalkstalkies  7 місяців тому +1

      Very true. I’ve done the binder thing in the past when I lived in my apartment. Once this is all setup I plan to use the back part of the double deep for the things I don’t care quite as much about…out of sight but accessible.

  • @jamied1579

    A very nice option. Looks good, holds a lot and price competitive...Heath from Cereal At Midnight also has some basic, but very effective, cheap home-made shelving...
    Unfortunately none of it is an option when you're renting, unless you have a very understanding landlord lol
    I have to stick to flat-pack shelving units for now, but they're not super expensive either for what they hold...

  • @AustinStPierre

    That’s awesome man, reminds me of how I did my shelves. Brackets and boards that cost like $100 and I can store over 1,000 movies! There’s no way I’d spend a thousand+ dollars just to store movies lol Looking forward to seeing how your rooms turn out!

    Physical media collectors are such a strange breed, we spend thousands of dollars a month on movies.But refuses to spend a decent amount on shelves that hold it or the players that played them.We're cheap in some aspects and spend like drunk sailers in others don't get it

    • @timtalkstalkies
      @timtalkstalkies  7 місяців тому +2

      Haha you’re not wrong. I’m ok with it here because I honestly don’t feel like something such as that modern shelving solution is better. I’ve run through about all the put togethers possible and spent thousands. Only real step that would be a huge improvement is legitimately hiring a carpenter for customs all around. We’re talking a $7k to $10k job at that point which yeah I’m not comfortable with that. Played wise I totally agree, but I never cheaped out there….using a UB820.
      Believe me I’ve spent many many hours researching shelving and the Legitimate only solution id rather at the moment is full on customs by a professional carpenter…maybe some day in the future but not now.

    I used to live in a 4 bedroom house back in the day and I could show off my collection. But now I live in a studio so everything is really crammed now. I have movies from floor to ceiling all around. Remember the ending of Raiders Of The Lost Ark warehouse? That's how my studio looks lol!🤣 I don't know but your movie room looks fairly organized to me. The wall that can fit a 1,000 movies is awesome. You'll get your movie room the way you envision it Tim!🤔

    I assume you typically have a curtain over the window? Sunlight could wreak plenty of havoc on your collection

    • @timtalkstalkies
      @timtalkstalkies  7 місяців тому

      Yesish…new curtains are going up and a curtain was there. That window though is sometimes open sometimes not. I have a garage and huge ass hedge outside that blocks a ton of direct sunlight. The wall shown in this video was a wall of steelbooks for awhile and the sun angle never actually hit that wall and I’ve experienced no fading. Like I said it’s only open sometimes kinda dependent on the situation.

    Love the simple setup. A suggestion, buy a Dremel tool and use the metal cutting wheels to cut off the bracket parts that protrude out.
    I had to build custom shelves to store my movies in my HVAC room. It was the best place to put them. Kept it cheap and used common board from Lowe’s.
    Have you thought about taking some shelves across the windows? It might make a great place to display some statues with the natural light behind them.

    I very nice option for sure. As sure as the world, I would rip my clothes on those rack things that stick out..lol..My shelves hold 500 movies each and I have 7 of them in my room. I paid around $60 dollars each for them. So I spent around $400 dollars total on shelves that hold 3,500 movies. However, I would never double stack movies, that is a huge no no. Cant wait to see your completed room once you are done. I am sure you will love it.
