The place is called Bela Bela in Sepedi(pronounced Bila Bila in isiNguni, meaning Boil Boil) because there are hot springs that produce hot/boiling water. Or warm baths.
Thanks for the explanation. I suspect the name Bila Bila is Nguni as well. Most Pedi speaking people are actually Nguni including the Ngwane (Nkoana), Langa (Laka), Mledlane (Moletlane), Mhwaduba (Mohwaduba), baNyathini (Banareng), Ndebele (Tebele), baNgoni (baKone), Mbayi (Pai) and others

I've almost always thought that Sepedi is an Afrikan language, and so is Setswana SeSotho and SeLobedu, etc. They spell their words EXACTLY how Bela Bela is spelt, but pronounce it the Nguni way, Bila Bila. It's just that the "ee" sound is softer here, not heightened.
The difference lies in the stress of the "ee" sound. Where there is a heightened "ee" sound they put/use "i", and where there is a soft "ee" sound, they put/use "e".
Examples:- Setswana, Sepedi, SeSotho, Senyolo, Sekgowa, Sebulu. Not Sitswana, Sipedi, Sisuthu, Sikguwa, etc. The second set of words would sound so differently from the sound you are used to, in their way of writing, in their language. I hope 🤞 I make sense.
But, where there is a heightened "ee" sound, they put "i", eg Phuti, not phute, for impunzi. The "ee" sound is raised here. Also, Moti, is pronounced as Muthi in isiNguni.
I hope this clarifies why I thought the newscaster should have read Bela Bela as Bila Bila, instead of the meaningless BHELA BHELA!
It's all to do with respecting other people's languages, instead of butchering them like how our erstwhile colonizers did!
I'm in no way a MoPedi, nor am I a MoSotho, Motswana etc, but I understand and respect how they write and pronounce their words! And so should ALL of us, YOU included!
@@jamesndlovu1765 It's actually Van Warmelo's deliberate choice of Europeanisque orthography in writing South African Sotho-Tswana to separate Sotho speakers (Tswana is Sotho dialect) from Nguni speakers especially since the majority of the Sotho speakers are "Pedi" an ethnic manufactured to counter Nguni-majority from mostly Nguni ethnic groups such as the Langa (Laka), Ngwane (Nkoana), Mbayi (Pai), Koni (Ngoni), Pulana, and the real baPedi (Marota/Noko).
My point is African languages are written in the phonetic form except South African Sotho. The seTswana of Botswana and Sotho of Lesotho is written conventionally e.g Sikwati of Botswana would be Sekuate in South Africa. Hence, Semenya (Pedi) is actually Simenya. Chokwe (Pedi) is actually Shongwe. Laka is actually Langa. Mahlaela is actually Mahlalela. Ledwaba is actually Ludwaba. Kekana is actually Gegana. Mothopeng is actually Mthombeni. Matlala is Madlala. Mokhoebane is Mkhwebane. Molapo is Mlambo. Masebe is Masibi (Msibi).
