If you're filling in an application for an Australian visa and you get to the question "Do you have a criminal record?" don't say oh, I didn't know you still needed one...
I came here to make the same comment. A British comedian (alas, I can't remember who) actually said this when he landed in Australia years ago. The response was a very intimate "welcome to Australia" at the business end of a pair of latex gloves lol.
America was the penal colony before the American Revolution. After independence Britain couldn't send them there anymore, so they were sent to Australia. Religious rejects weren't deported anywhere. The hard line puritans, who'd been losing their power to persecute others since the restoration, chose to go there. They, contrary to American mythology, weren't being persecuted. They were being stopped from persecuting others, which they'd been doing under puritan Oliver Cromwell. After the restoration and the ascension of Charles II, things became more relaxed and tolerant. Most of Britain breathed a sigh of relief. The Puritans however, hated it. So........ That's who the Pilgrim Fathers were. Puritans who resented not being allowed to bully others anymore.
Well said. Americans view them as people who were seeking freedom. And yes, they were in a way, the freedom to control and persecute with religion. The ‘Puritans’ were the persecutors!!!
The funniest thing Jack Whitehall did with his dad on TV was when he got him to dress up as a drag queen. That was hilarious. He took it very literally, as you'll see if you watch it.
As the historian said Australia was no picnic. It was a penal colony - basically a prison. Newport is my home town and there is a lot of memorials in the town to the Chartists. An annual torchlit march is made down Stow Hill to the Westgate hotel on the anniversary which is moving to see.
I did some family research of my own. My 4x great grandfather murdered his first wife, and got away with it because he had connections in the legal system and on the jury. Then he married my 4x great grandmother. It's pretty insane. But there's not one of us if you go back far enough that doesn't have real bad apples in their family tree.
Yeah man I completely understand that you don't know what the chartists movement was. Arguably chartism was the root of all modern unions and labour movements. At that time, Australia was a prison colony.
You should do "Who do you think you're". I'm curious to know about your lineage from the American Civil War. Especially since a number of your audience members have commented that you resemble a soldier from the Civil War-specifically from the Confederate side.😂
the past was the worst, the farther back you go the darker it becomes. Anyone claiming they are proud of their history either didn't pay attention or are sadists
Who do you think you are? has been running for quite a while, there are some interesting and emotional stories and some surprises. I see Danny Dyer has been mentioned. Stephen Fry is among them.
There's more great bits from the episode, then those bits. You should find the full episode. Charles Dance episode was very interesting, his father being in 70s when he was born 😳
There was a segment of this programme where Jackk was getting increasingly outraged by the behaviour of their ancestors, and Michael was actually admiring their accomplishments. I'm sure they played up the difference in views for the camera, but is was funny to watch!
"I then suspected that something disagreeable was about to take place." 19th C speech and writing was absolutely tickety-boo. From memory, the only point that didn't eventually get taken up was one year parliaments. Recently though, we seen to have taken up the tradition of one year PM's. There were some questionable signatures on the charter. Queen Victoria and Ned Ludd signed, which was surprising. Repeal of the Corn Laws had more middle class support and succeeded, Chartism a bit ahead of it's time and didn't.
I’m doing ancestry stuff atm and reading old documents is difficult, it’s worse than a doctors handwriting, especially when they’re in Latin or another language.
Donald Trumps dream colony, sadly already taken ..... but ....... I can see Donald Trump and Elon Musk hugging each other unified after pronouncing Australia as the new American 2.0 as he invades and conquers, throws out all Australians, and replaces them with his own copies.

Brilliant

Keep on keeping on, KB! I watch your reactions more than I watch anyone else's! Quality, mate! 😊
"Australia, that's lovely" was fucking hilarious.
To add one little thing ,, the puritans went to the u s to persecute not because they where persecuted …..
Yes, how do Americans not realise that fact?
historically..both actually.
This would make the Armstrong and Miller. "Who do you think you are "sketch funnier
That was fascinating.
I am obsessed with family history. You do get really emotionally invested.

You should watch the one with Danny Dyer. It is hilarious. He's a Cockney wide-boy actor and... I won't ruin it, but you will enjoy it.
You’re right - that was peak tv OMG 🇬🇧

You should check out when Jack takes his dad to woody harellsons weed cafe, so funny
I’m Irish/English and I LOVE the bloody welsh ❤xx

Well, well. I was born in Newport, at the top of Stow Hill, behind the Westgate Hotel.
Danny Dyer, Minnie Driver, Greg Davies & Greg Wallace are good ones to watch
You should watch actor and Cockney geezer Danny Dyer’s episode. It’s a hoot.

Austrailia was the prison😂
We could do with the Chartists today in the broken UK
get off your backside then, if you are this concerned.
if you have, all power to your elbow.
Michael is just one of those people who make swearing seem like an extension of their body and vocabulary. Billy Connolly is another example.
"I then suspected that something disagreeable was about to take place."

This is quite timely, considering what the US has just done to itself, and what is emerging daily.
The US is reclaiming it’s freedom from the persecution of the woke brigade. More power to them!
👎
Hi mate… u and queen boomer really have to give “derek” a watch along.. so funny
Yma O Hyd ;-)
There was literally nothing in Australia at the time, it would of been like Guantanamo.
Donald Trumps dream colony, sadly already taken ..... but ....... I can see Donald Trump and Elon Musk hugging each other unified after pronouncing Australia as the new American 2.0 as he invades and conquers, throws out all Australians, and replaces them with his own copies.
