Here's some clarification on the source of this video (both parts 1 and 2). There was a film crew accompanying the ride on a flatbed truck. I don't remember who they were. Following the ride, the film crew provided Murdoch with an informal tape. The film crew also produced a documentary for cable including some or all of the material on the informal tape. Murdoch provided me with a VCR-to-VCR copy of the informal tape, which I sat on for 30 years before posting it to UA-cam.

Great memories from the Butte. Lived there for seven years. I was a Hotshot, worked on and in the Red Lady. And a lot of stuff I can't talk about. Seeing Murdoch made me smile, who knew what a legend he would become. Also meeting guys like Townes Van Zandt at Mayor Willy's. CB as close to heaven I'll ever get ✌

The piece was sponsored by Suntour bike components. Please credit it accordingly!

Thank you for crediting Dana -- Tapley Dawson worked with him as well. We love and miss Dana! Also, Tapley, his brothers and mom Patricia were our next door neighbors and lifelong friends beginning in 1972 in Crested Butte. Tapley's brother Lou was the first guy to ski every Colorado fourteener! Thanks for these memories!

We probably ran into each other, cleekmaker00, as I did Crested Butte for the last time in '84. Still have the bike I rode then, too. I posted photos to retrobike.co.uk -- just search for drpaddle. There's also a photo there of the bike I rode in these vids from 1980. Glad you appreciated the video.

I just started riding, on a Specialized Fuze. These people were the brave ones, looked like they were having fun, regardless of tech. Where's that Hagen Daz girl?, she's got to be in my league by now.

Highly sophisticated pieces of machinery. At the time yeah. No matter what year it is whatever you're talking about is state of art. 40 years people will be laughing at our super sweet bikes of today. And electrics will come way down in price when the technology improves and production gets cheaper.

Just clicked the 420-th thumbs up last night! Appropriate! (No more!)
When these guys were developing their klunkers, I was pushing my Mongoose BMX bike up the local hills complaining, "Why don't they put GEARS on these things!" Oh what could have been!
(I also should have invented the Camelback, but that's another story...)
I was looking at a picture on Ibis' website of one of the Crested Butte events that named almost everyone in the photo. Cool that I know a few of 'em.
And lo and behold, there was "Adlai Karim!" (Looks like him at 1:47) The dude who runs (or ran, or barely runs) "Karim Cycles" in Berkeley. Never knew the dude was THERE from the beginning! OK, now it makes sense. Before learning that, I never understood why this drug-addled dude ran a shady bike shop in Berkeley.
    The more you know!

His name is Howie Hammerman. According to IMDB the belch was for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, but since he worked for the sound effects crew on Star Wars, he would also be Jabba.

Howie just participated in the ride, not in the filming. (I'm not even now 100% sure that this was the year I met him, as I went to four or five of these events.) I really don't know who was involved in the filming: just a film crew in a truck accompanying the ride. I expect Murdoch would remember a name if you wanted to ask him. I'm sure you would have no problem finding a mailing address, as he hasn't moved around much lately.

Are you sure Howie Hammerman had something to do with this video? I met him when I was making KLUNKERZ and he never mentioned it. Charlie Kelly never mentioned it, either. Those guys knew I was paying for footage for the film. Odd. These are wonderful pieces of cycling history. Thanks for posting these super cool videos.

I do not own this footage. I received a VHS copy of the documentary from Murdoch soon after the ride, then digitized it many years later. Somebody must have a clean copy of the documentary, but I don't know who that would be.
