  • In 1976 a group of Crested Butte, Colorado locals, as a response to the Aspen locals invading town on their motorcycles after riding Pearl Pass, decided to answer with a ride of their own. Only this little ride was on Fat Tire Clunker Bikes. The "tour" got noticed by some west coast folks and grew over the years into a mountain bike tradition. This is a video of I think the 6th year. The Mountain Bike industry was still in its infancy so some of the bikes were still hand built from parts and pieces.....

People always asking me, how can I ride a bike in jeans. Probably I'm clunker too.

Historic video of the beginning of MTB bikes, cool and amazing, and the bicycles of this time are very different to the bikes of today.

I see no downhill wipeouts were filmed. I'm dubious that this is the whole story. Everyone that is showing an interest in riding bikes deserves the whole story.

You must be a lot of fun at parties. 😉
Seriously though, they did used to show all of the major injuries for each competitor in the X-Games, but stopped years ago. In that context, where kids are compelled to try the stuff they see on TV, I think that was actually a good idea, as they have no clue what preceded these pros making it look so easy. This, however, is NOT the X-Games! Coordination and discretion will determine a riders survivability.

Do they still do this "race" every year? I live near Crested Butte and I'm into mtn biking. I'm of the era of this video. I remember the very first commercial mtb's.

This is super interesting. Can someone please answer one question?. Why was the police onto the Klunkers?. The narrator of this video said "it was said that it was better away from the cops and concrete ". It don't seem like these riders were doing nothing illegal from what I can see. Well, either way, I'm very impressed with this video.
