    1:57 has got to be my favourite 'Insane mode' reaction to date! What makes this special is how genuinely shocked you seem, despite the anticipation. Plus it's usually the passenger soiling themselves, rather than the driver. Brilliant!

    Testing the P85D myself, back in Jan 25th this year in NYC, NY, I have to admit I had a similar experience and felt much like you did, only I had my wife & 14Y old daughter in the back seat, while a Tesla rep. was in the front passenger seat.
    It literally took my breath away. I had the same noxious feeling, eye blur and had to get a good grip at the wheel to just hold my body from fully backing up into the seat because of the intense acceleration I was not really ready for.
    Doing it again several times yet, helps your mind and body better prepared, so it lasts shorter.
    I guess those who own it and experience this feeling several times are like jet pilots - they adjust to it completely.
    It's a rush I'm more than to feel every day, if only it was possible to get a bank-loan for a one in Israel...

    • @konczk
      @konczk 9 років тому

      skierpage not really. A Tesla can only do this once or twice, then it needs a cool-off period during which it has limited power. People tried to track test the model S, but it usually limits power after about a minute and a half due to overheating. To make a true performance track car, Tesla would need to improve the cooling very significantly, which would probably require a complete redesign. It is also far too heavy to qualify as a performance vehicle you can take out on track days. I think the 2019 brand new roadster will be the first true performance track car from tesla. Some would say the original roadster also qualifies, but again, I'm not so sure due to well-know cooling issues.

    • @Dude31463
      @Dude31463 9 років тому +2

      Christian Koncz I did wonder how a Tesla would do on a track circuit such as the 24 hour Le Mans... That would be very cool... as that race is truly about endurance and reliability of the machine. I would imagine the only challenge would be to develop the cooling system for those electrons high flow rate sustained throughout the race. Obviously the car would have to be built ground up for that specific purpose like most race cars are anyway... The battery swap would be key in such a race and the battery range would have to be matched to the tire range/change for max efficiency. It would be an interesting project of a Tesla Race Division which doesn't even exist... they're just swamped ramping up production of street cars for now... nor do they need marketing/public exposure, which is the main purpose of Racing (with R&D a fringe benefit) as manufacturers marketing their wares by means of arena "Entertainment"...

    What is funny is that when I first saw this I was like.."okay whatever he is exaggerating, come on now". I got to test out a P85D with ludicrous mode and holy shit, it really is scary lol. The same feeling when you drop from the top of a roller coaster after climbing the tall hill is the same exact feeling when someone slams the pedal. Same exact feeling. I really thought people were exaggerating in these videos. Let me tell you it is absolutely nuts. You feel it like you are dropping downhill on rollercoaster.

If anyone doubt this go online or go to a Tesla dealership and have a test drive yourself and you will never be the same again.

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 9 років тому +9

      iMiguelAOG If a small enough pack to fit a Model 3 is capable to deliver 568kW instantly, then it would, and probably could out perform with less weight.
      That could be 2 or 3 years from now. Considering that 2 years ago that the flagship Model S was over a second slower to 60mph, had no 4WD and did not have the hardware to enable autonomous driving, I'd say it's a very likely. There's no point doubting Musk, we should know that at this stage.

    • @terrysimons
      @terrysimons 9 років тому +5

      toyotaprius79 Based on watching a ton of Videos from Elon, I'm assuming that they're actually betting on battery density, plus the 20% reduced chassis size, but a fully steel chassis to get the cost down on the Model 3, so I don't think it will necessarily be lighter than the Model S - maybe even heavier, but the increased battery density gains will equal out to similar distance (they've quoted a "close to 200 mile range") and possibly similar performance.
      The battery density wins are all but confirmed based on the 90kWh packs and the stated 5-6% expected gains per year on battery density, but even that was inferable based on earlier commentary in videos from JB Straubel and other comments from Elon. JB, in a video from circa 2014 (IIRC), says that battery density (historically) doubles approximately every 10 years.
      Basically, aluminum is an expensive material to manufacture the car with, and they need to shave a full $40,000 off of the car.
      Certainly some of the cost reduction will come from battery manufacturing cost reductions at the GW factory, but I'm betting that a steel chassis is one of the major contributors of cost reduction in the model 3.

    • @mistamaog
      @mistamaog 9 років тому

      Terry Simons Well wasn't the battery of the Model S originally in the 40,000s? I think that and the gigafactory would have to do a lot with shaving down costs. Then steel being used would be second.

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 9 років тому +1

      Terry Simons I can't believe I forgot about that! That news must be over a year old now! Hopefully, Tesla may arrange something with BMW, exchanging drivetrain prowess for some of BMW's CFRP.
      iMiguelAOG That would make sense in a way. When Nissan and GM both released their plug-ins, the global average price on batteries were over $450/kWh, making a Model S pack at that price you've mentioned. But Tesla didn't release its price until around last year, claiming it was $200, with Nissan claiming somewhere around $270/kWh. We have no indication if it did cost $40,000, but Tesla used Panasonic's 18650 cells that were already very popular in laptops. It would've had a price advantage to automotive-only cells, but we can't say by how much for sure.
      The Gigafactory would be one sure thing to celebrate, but its effects would take over a year. Batteries would take a month to be manufactured.

    • @skierpage
      @skierpage 9 років тому

      iMiguelAOG I guarantee it will. Elon Musk has confirmed AWD (dual motors) will be an option, and even if it doesn't have room for the 503 hp (!!!) P85D rear motor, dual 259 hp motors is pretty impressive. The Model 3 might have less room for a huge battery with high-power delivery (the P70D "only" delivers 328hp to those motors), but on the other hand battery chemistry will have improved. There is no way Tesla won't offer the tricks of the Ludicrous mode (smart fuse, Inconel battery contacts, etc.) in an expensive Model 3 version.

      I think I was middle aged about 15-20 years ago.
      Two, you clearly haven't driven a Model S.
      The reason I say that is due to my work over the last 20 years I've driven and ridden literally 100's of different vehicles, from a 76 ton Challenger 2 tank to a 3,500 horse power top fuel dragster, single seat racing cars, rally cars and even a monster truck.
      I have experienced faster acceleration than in this vid, but this experience is very different, the highest G force is experienced in the first 1.3 seconds, way above anything even a high performance bike can manage.

      It doesn't build up to it.

    Great video. The 0-60 debate will always run and run. I get the fairground ride comparison as that can make your head spin and your just sitting there strapped in not trying to control the whole thing. I think a point worth mentioning is how this is a heavy sedan that you can go on holiday in with your family and not a 2 seat carbon fibre super car.

    Just an FYI,
    It has a couple of significant differences from a rwd 85 Tesla.
    One the rear motor is 503 horsepower and the front motor is 288 horsepower for a total of 691 horsepower.
    The way Tesla gets better efficiency from an awd car is when your cruise is set to maintain the cars speed on the road be it a local road or the highway after you get to your set speed the car stops feeding power to the rear motor and you driving in at that moment a front wheel drive car. The front motor being smaller uses less energy versus the rear motor hence its efficiency goes way up on the cruise control. Both motors are used for regenerative braking but at cruise unless your climbing a steep grade only the front motor drives the car.
    That's how an awd car gets better efficiency than a rear wheel drive car 🚗.
    Absolutely amazing that Tesla comes up with a way to make a heavy car have better efficiency than a lighter car.
    Cheers!

    Robert, by far the best P85D reaction video ever! You make me laugh. I too recently had a test drive of a Model S 60 and I told my viewers (I still haven't posted the video as of this posting.) that that was more than enough power for anybody. I can't even imagine that much power in a car that size. I probably would have reacted the same way myself. LOL

    Hi Robert! Great vid! I am one of the 'new guys' to EV's, I've gone from a 2004 R32 to a 2015 e-Golf 8 months ago, and I will never go back to burning gas again! And thanks in part to fun videos from you and the whole FC and TEN group even though I'm in CA.
    I LOVE my e-Golf and don't feel I've sacrificed driving dynamics, but it's honestly a gap filler until the Tesla Model 3, unless VW keeps making this car better and better :)
    Keep up the updates! and I'll do my part to spread the word on EV's and your channel as well!

  • @Dreekol15

    Haha, I had the same reaction to my Yamaha Fz-09, a mixed bag of being frightened to death, and laughing like a mad man. The bike goes from 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. The torque is so, that under hard acceleration your front wheel comes off the ground. You hear the roar of the inline 3 cylinder engine, and the tone of the Akrapovic exhaust. When you do finally decide to slow, you bleep the throttle to downshift and are greeted with flames and grumbles from the exhaust, beckoning you to accelerate again. You get all of that for around 8 grand. Since you're on a motorcycle, you are more at one with the road and machine. Its the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

    I had the pleasure of test driving a P85D a week ago, and I agree. It's brilliant!!! After your first "Insane Mode" experience of acceleration the words "Holy Sh*t" come flying out of your mouth! It's practically uncontrollable, yes, like Tourrets. It's my next car for sure, unless I end up with a P90D - but I'd be thrilled to own a P85D just the same. I've owned some amazing cars, but this one is my favorite.

      +jukkasc2 Oddly, there aren't that many Moose in the Cotswold area of England, we do have deer though which, although smaller, are big enough to cause serious problems if you run into them. Thankfully this was filmed in an area I've lived in for 30 years so I know the surrounding woodland and the areas the deer inhabit. The woodland I was driving through was fenced off from deer about 15 years back, hence why I filmed there.

    I honestly think Electric cars will be the predominate over petrole with in 10 years. More so I think being able to recharge the cars in less than 10 minutes from 1/4 to Full. which if you think about is about the same time as it it would to fully fill a vehicle

    • @mynameisphil401
      @mynameisphil401 8 років тому +1

      I don`t think so. In my opinion current gas and diesel cars are still going to dominate the market for 10 to 15 years, and after that phevs and electric cars with range extenders for about 10 years until the range and fast charging solutions are worked out, and then (25 or so years from now) we will finally reach a domination of electric cars on the roads

    So the step up to the P100D is a bit of a jump in acceleration...and then imagine what that *200kwh battery* in Roadster 2.0 is going to be like! I can see the UA-cam videos already that people will be posting of drivers vomiting as they mash the throttle for the first time in that (or crashing the car into a light pole). Anyway, loved seeing your first reaction there, Robert. Awesome!

    Watching this after just watching the Renault ZOE GT line R135 video released 26/03/2020. It's crazy to think that the car that caused that reaction is now considered slow by Tesla standards. I believe the current performance Model S does 0-60 in 2.4 seconds (0.7 seconds faster). Mental, but some how very cool. I had a ride in a P85D in 2018 at FCL and I had a very similar reaction to be honest, but still want to do it again for some reason. I think I must have a screw loose.

    Bloody hell, just the view from the side window is enough to make me feel a little sick. While i dont see the use of engines such as this in standard road cars, im guessing its full potential will come in use in the proper track day stuff like forula e :3
    Anyway, im glad to see electric cars are quickly (literally :D) catching up to the combustion variants. Given a few more years of development, and hoperfully it will be a much greener future.
