  • Coming up, Cutting Crew ruled 1987 with 3 big hits from their album Broadcast… (I Just) Died in You Arms, I’ve Been in Love Before, and One For the Mockingbird. And then by the next year, they were gone… Never to be heard from again. It’s quite perplexing because they had everything going for them to last a decade or more, the looks, the songs, the style... Up next lead singer Nick Van Eede tells the story of a wondrous period when Cutting Crew topped the charts with a platinum album, a #1 single, and 2 other big hits that put them in the running… Find out what happened to them next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightning where we break down the history of a beloved one-hit extravaganza that still resonates in our culture.. following up on our Mr. Mister episode where we talk about it from the album side. we do the same today only with a different group. This European band had a song that left the world transfixed It went to the top of charts in both the US and Canada and top 5 pretty much everywhere else including #4 in the UK and Australia. Take a look:
Then after dominating MTV and the charts with their classic 80s hit. they followed up with their 2nd straight top 10 hit, I’ve Been In Love Before. That went to #9 in the us and #2 on the AC charts. Then the fast-paced heartfelt Anthem One for the Mockingbird went to #38n and was used in the 80s movie Can’t Buy Me Love, this gave them 3 consecutive top 40 hits from the same album. That album was Broadcast which would go to #16 on the album charts. They were nominated for a Grammy later that year for Best New Artist.
The band at that time consisted of singer/songwriter and rhythm guitarist Nick Van Edde along with Underrated guitarist, the late Kevin McMichael
Bassist and instrumentalist Colin Farley and drummer-percussionist Martin Beedle. The album Broadcast was proof that their best days were ahead of them….
So what went wrong? Up next we sit down with lead singer and songwriter Nick Vane Edde and find out the story of this album and these three hits and then we try to answer that question. As we go into this interview with Nick I do want to thank our sponsor Zennie eyewear the brand of glasses that I wear all the time. Right now you can get over 1100 pairs of glasses for less than 7 dollars. that’s about a fourth of the price of a brand-new vinyl record.. Love the Cutting Crew! I used to have a job with Shasta soda, and we had to drive from town to town and go to various grocery stores and set up displays. Sometimes, the drive between locations was lengthy, so we would listen to cassette tapes on the way. "Broadcast" by Cutting Crew go a LOT of play time on those trips. I love every song on that album. I like I've Just Died but I liked One for the Mockingbird better. I loved Broadcast and how almost every song segued into the next. The beginning of IBILB I love Any Colour but my absolute favorite is The Broadcast. That song kills me and can put me in a better mood. I wasn't moved to buy "Broadcast" in 1987 but I bought "The Scattering" in 89 after I heard the single, "The Last Thing." That album is INCREDIBLE. I still listen to that album often and sing every track. Eventually I acquired "Broadcast" and, although it may have more hits, "The Scattering", to me, has more depth and overall quality. I remember making a mix tape for a girl in a doomed relationship and she remarked that the band name "Cutting Crew" was appropriate because every song cut straight to her heart. Many, many thanks for the interview with Nick and for the retrospective. Just wow!

I had many of the same experiences in my own youth. My own father supported me in my musical exploration, but he never wanted me to undervalue anything or not work for it.

Oh man, one of my favorite albums ever. Not even the big radio play songs are my favorite on this one. Love Broadcast the song. I have this on just about every available media form. Cassette playing on my Alpine in my 70 camaro. Love it. Thanks for this great interview.

Broadcast is one of those albums that I can listen to the whole thing over and over again. Any Colour, One For the Mockingbird, (I Just) Died in Your Arms... all of it. Loved Cutting Crew's sound. I never even realized they had made more than one album. Definitely sounds like their label failed them.

As with me, a very very pretty strawberry blinde was involved, 17 and we talked and talked but she left where l was to go to Art College.
Should have followed her, or grew two huge spheres and asked her out.
Another young lady saw she likex e and l liked her but too shy to ever ask her out.
    Damn what a fool.
Heres a bit of live advice to listeners out there, if a woman or young lady walj across your vision of love.
Grab it with both arms, fiht for it, never let it go.
For you will spend the rest of your life wondering what if, maybe or in your dreams, that's where it will stay.
    In your dreams.
Thanks Adam you brought a happy memory back for me.
    All the best brother.
Peace n love to your family.

I remember "Died in Your Arms" being a favorite not only on the jukeboxes in bars & bowling alleys back in the day, but also on the lip synch competition "Puttin' On The Hits." I wasted many a quarter on pinball and Gorf while any number of bowling teams loaded this up on the jukebox playlist.

I have a top 20 list of my all time favorite songs of my lifetime. Also a top 20 favorite albums list. The Scattering is number 2 on that list. I've played it so many times in my 32 years of marriage that my wife can sing the lyrics when I play it. Cutting Crew is one of my favorites to come out of the 80's.

I LOVED Cutting Crew! My sister got me into all these amazing bands from the 80's (The Cure, Depeche Mode, U2, Cutting Crew, etc) and I spent my whole life listening to these bands and still do to this day. I remember when I was hooked on the Broadcast album when I was in High School (98-2002) and I got my girlfriend, my friends and now my daughter into them. Loved this band! I created a lot of amazing memories with Cutting Crew's Broadcast album and these 3 songs specifically.

When the Cutting Crew hit I thought they would definitely have more hits within the year, but 2 and a half years later is just too long to keep the momentum. Just died in your arms will always be an 80s classic and my favorite is still Been in Love Before, I was astounded when I just heard him sang acoustic, fantastic! This song is beautiful should have been even bigger. Fantastic episode and interview professor, I wish they had made more music, like everyone I'm sure

@ProfessorofRock You really do such great work and a great service to music. I consider myself an 80s aficionado and have an extensive collection of 80s music. Including deep tracks from artists who most feel only have one or two “good” songs. Embarrassingly, I haven’t gone too deep with Cutting Crew. And now have several more songs in my collection from them - some I think are better than the great Died In Your Arms! Keep up the great work and THANK YOU.

I Just Died in Your Arms is pretty much the perfect song, between the great melody and bridge, lyrics, and of course the crisp guitar tone and outro. I put that song up there with "Something About You" by Level 42 and "Owner of a Lonely Heart" on the Mount Olympus of '80s Top 40 hits. - Dave
