Women Horseback Archers Compete in Yabusame
- Yabusame is a traditional Japanese martial art where archers shoot at targets from galloping horses. Performances were always held at shrines and considered to be sacred rituals reserved for men, but in recent years women have begun taking part. This is a result of yabusame’s evolution from ritual to sport, which opened the door to female enthusiasts. Towada City in Aomori now holds an annual, women-only yabusame contest which draws large crowds to enjoy the excitement, skill and colorful traditional costumes of the archers. We follow a 15-year old girl competing against her veteran instructor for the top prize.

That Teacher’s grace in losing to the her student earns for her so much respect. She deserves to be called “Teacher.”
@Dale Reay 🤣
@Dale Reay lmaooo
Losing.
Because the Teacher lost to her student the Teacher actually won , because she was successful in Teaching her Student Well , that is a victory in itself .
@@michealtull9033 I fully agree If your students cannot beat you, then you are not a good Teacher.
2:26 The upper body is not shaking at all. Amazing.
@2:15 explains the style. That's really hard on the legs too as if riding at all wasn't doing that enough. I do it on my motorcycle if the cross winds are so strong they make me feel unsteady. Getting my butt off the seat puts all my weight way down low on the pegs. I can only do it for a fraction of a minute at a time though. Those women are obviously strong.
Really good form. I'm a rider here in America and we often practice this position, it takes a lot of strength and balance! Also I always post the trot meaning I stand then sit alternating with every step, which is a common technique. The Japanese style seems unique though, when they go in what we call "two-point", or standing in our stirrups, these riders are keeping their hips lower than what I've learned.
Really mind blowing. As someone who has ridden a fair amount it’s truly incredible! And the unique style they use is so fascinating…

Her core strength must be insane
Horse archery would be a wonderful sport to add to the Olympics. All the other equestrian events come from western European traditions, and it would be nice to have more diversity and to represent other horse riding cultures.
Plus, it's just super impressive to watch. Definitely Olympia worthy!
YES! They need more equestrian events. Horses are involved in many of our athletic pursuits!
Oh yes! Absolutely! Bring it on!
@@hungvu262 thanks for sharing!
I completely agree!!!
Wonderful, her teacher is incredible, you want your students to grow beyond you; they are your success.
japan is such a treasure. one of the few incredibly modern nations who hasn’t let go of their beautiful culture
This country reminds me France, with every castles and traditions, but also really modern in the cities.
Japan is nothing in front of USA ❤️
@@user-kd8pr4zr4i Japan has multi thousand history and traditions .
USA ? 300 years and not of the most glorious if what was taught to me is correct .
Even if born in the States, I?ll gladly go to Japan and learn about their culture, traditions and living, won't even mention food that is simply one of the most refined on earth .
@@user-kd8pr4zr4i lmao are you one of those people who fantasize usa
@@kanishkanegi5594 Japan is just overhyped by Anime. No one knows japan before 100 years
This is probably the most beautiful sport I have ever seen.
What a wonderful tradition! This is so fascinating.
It would be a shame if this was allowed to fade into history so Aoi Fuse is correct in her dedication to preserving Yabusame.
Yes, Preserve the Yabu, Protect the Tsuba
Love how she hugs her pony like that out of happiness:)
Same here. But I guess it is a horse, not a pony.😊
she hug it because it's "cute", then she will probably have it killed when it's not cute anymore
They are part of the team. A big part I hope they do care for their pony properly.
Happiness, yes, but I also saw humility. She was 'covering her mouth' - because (as I understand it) the Japanese don't brag or show ego. They're team-players, so she hugged her 'team'. Shared the joy.
@@kylieminou7775 what-
the way the teacher hugs her student after losing to her is genuinely heartwarming🧡
Yes indeed! For the teacher ('sensei'), I imagine this was her biggest win: she had succeeded in raising the next star. There is a powerful devotion to the 'craft' - especially in teachers.
If anything, that should be considered a victory in itself. It shows that she taught her student very well and years of doing that has paid off.
That is AWESOME! This looks fantastic -- you know a teacher is good when their student exceeds them! They're both wonderful!
Exactly!🙌🏻💪🏻💓
This _so_ needs to be in the Olympics.
what a beautiful sport and under the gorgeous cherry blossoms no less
If I were a teacher in a sport like this and I lost to my student, I would be extremely happy and grateful for it. My student beating me just goes to show how well I’ve taught them. And this teacher more than deserves her title of showing such grace and generosity in the face of defeat by her own student.
Japan has a very long tradition of elite archers. It's really cool that they still participates in their cultural traditions, even ones like archery which are considered outdated today.
Archery is an Olympic sport.
This was actually the original samurai combat system and it lasted for nearly 1000 years before the sword came to symbolise the samurai class. For most of their history the samurai were known for their small tough ponies and their skills with the bow. Samurai would combat each other by manoeuvring their horses around each other while shooting arrows at each other. That’s why samurai armour originally developed only to protect one side of the body - the neck and armpit area on one side being the weak spot, to allow the warrior to draw the bow. The history of samurai armour is basically the history of changing from bow and horse to sword and foot. It’s also why the ambush became the favoured samurai tactic - the trick to samurai combat was to get your horse on your opponent’s weaker armoured left side. A fast, small pony, attacking out of ambush, was always the best way to achieve that tactical advantage. The skills and tradition in this video are far more than what they seem - they influenced how the Japanese practiced and viewed warfare and politics, not to mention social hierarchies, and that influenced Japanese culture all the way up to, and including, world war 2.
The motion of their draw and release, and their clothing, are truly beautiful.
As a practicing archer who is well-accustomed to the Mediterranean style of draw, I find the Eastern style of draw with the thumb and arrow around the right side to be rather fascinating. That being said, I do wonder if there is a rule that only allows the Eastern style of draw in Yabusame.
I am grateful that these women compete at such a beautiful traditional sport & that they have their OWN level of competition!
AMAZING PERFECTION & GRACE!😍😍😍👍❤️
I can only imagine what it would be like to witness something like this in person....I so love the Japanese philosophy of respecting those upstream and downstream in the flow of time
Anyone here watching this wish to see this adopted by the Olympics?😊
God forbid. They would ruin it for sure.
It takes two years to master? I can’t even hit a target with bow and arrow while standing on the ground. I think it would take me a two decades to master. 🏹🐎
He was only talking about the upper body stillness when he mentioned it took two years to master.
To actually hit and ride well at the same time, takes a lifetime of practice and skill.
It’s so awesome how all these old sports are still going strong in Aomori
The lovely teacher taught her student very well. Congratulations.
BADASS. This needs to be spread around the world. Who wouldn't like this?!
how awesome is that!!!!! I never thought of Japanese women doing these kinds of things. Bravo!!
This is a very amazing art. Very enjoyable to watch.

what a graceful sport :-)
A great example of why Japanese bows are offset like that, makes them much easier to use from a horse
Beautiful ! Bushido still alive ! Very good to see yabusame !
This sport is absolutely amazing! Such a treat to watch. Wish video was longer ! Such great equestrians! And excellent mounts.
Precioso!!!!🙋🏻♀️🇪🇸

Investing in the past and the future at the same time. Both will bring uch joy and happiness. Thank you
I love this. Such skills. Such be beauty. I love the narrators voice too.
Excellent teacher. One of a good teacher greatest delights is their students surpassing them.
Fascinating tradition and sport. It is so true and important to maintain balance in the face of chaos. Nice to see a beautiful old tradition sustain into the future.
Amazing! How is it possible that there are dislikes? This is such an awesome display of skill and tradition.
I watched a documentary about Aoi. She was raised by a single mother, so dispite the finacial problem, her mother bought this horse for her daughter because Aoi really loves Yabusame and the horse. She and the horse are like sisters. The horse senses AOi what she wants so that the horse adjusts the speed, course and distance to makes sure she can hit the target. Such a amazing conbination!!
Just amazes me to see all the afforts this girls do to compete, beautiful horses too🙉👌👍
Honoured to witness a tradition and it's custodians
What a beautiful video! It would be interesting to find out how mountainous and rugged Japan was able to develop an effective horse archer culture.
As far as I know, 9th to 13th-century samurai went to war with few commoner troops and armed as horse archers. The small size of those armies, and aristocracy's penchant for duels, would make it easier to fit horse archery battles into smaller battlefields.
There was also cultural pressure from mainland Asia where the horse archer was uncontested.
Would seriously love to travel & see this display of competitive art!
Beautiful!

Omg! This is truly astounding! Tsugoidesu!!! Insha'Allah I pray I can enter this competition soon.
@Goolag Tube I would do proper research before jumping to conclusions. Even the enemies of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, couldn't help but at least admire him despite their deep hatred for him. He is unique in that he was successful not only in spirituality but also in all worldly affairs. I recommend buying a book of his biography that's written by Muslims as opposed to a book written by someone with a biased opinion of him. You're old enough to make that decision. I believe in you.
The student has become the master....
This is great & surprising! Very fun to watch. Uniform (in kimono) is also visually appealing! More frontiers could be open for women! We shall see.....

Wishing someday I could visit this country and watch this performance

Notice how they don't have counter weights on the bows!

Amazing how still their upper bodies stay while on the horse!!! True skill in that itself....much less having to shoot at something while doing it!!
